10. Soulwax - NY Excuse vs. 11. Arno - Les yeux de ma mere
Difficult matchup, but although Arno's singing is great, NY Excuse stays with me more.
9. Prefab Sprout - Faron Young vs. 1. Aimee Mann - Deathly
Never listened to Prefab Sprout before, but Faron Young is good fun. Deathy, though, is my own nomination and an emotional masterpiece that also happened to inspire one of the best movies of all time: Magnolia.
8. Randy Crawford - One Day I'll Fly Away vs. 5. Majical Cloudz - Childhood's End
Again a tight match. The suitably floating quality of the Crawford song is very welcome, but the dark atmosphere of Childhood's End just grabs me a little more.
12. Sonic Youth - Youth Against Fascism vs. 15. The Monkees - Porpoise Song
I know that Porpoise Song has some kind of status as a hidden classic, but I never liked it. It sounds overwrought, over-prettified and frankly duller than dishwater. Give me the kick of Sonic Youth over Porpoise Song any time, even if this isn't their best song either.
3. Mississippi John Hurt - Frankie vs. 2. Wallace Collection - Daydream
Another difficult one, because I have a soft spot for Mississippi John Hurt, but Daydream's first half is top 60's sound (the second half is good too, but more conventional).
13. Chance the Rapper - Chain Smoker vs. 14. Sleater-Kinney - Get Up
Sleater-Kinney is one of my top 10 bands, but The Hot Rock has always been the one album I couldn't get into and similarly I never got why Get Up was considered one of the standout songs of the band. So I'm voting for Chain Smoker here, although that is hardly a favorite of my either.
6. Sniff 'n' The Tears - Driver's Seat vs. 7. The Velvet Underground - Stephanie Says
Another tough one. Driver's Seat is an old favorite of mine and I can't vote against it, but Stephanie Says is very good too.
4. Python Lee Jackson - In a Broken Dream vs. 16. Scritti Politti - The Word Girl
A very easy one. The Word Girl is absolutely not my taste. In a Broken Dream on the other hand makes the best of Rod Stewart's great vocals.
