Acclaimed Music's Best of British (Deadline: March 1st)

Post by StevieFan13 »

So, as with every year, Radio X has released their fan-voted list of the best British songs of all time, and I'm not crazy about it:
http://charts.radiox.co.uk/2017/
Therefore, I think it'd be fun to have our own poll of the 100 best British songs ever. If you think we should expand the scope a bit, let me know. I'm only sticking with songs for now because I've never run a big poll like this before.

Some ground rules:
- I'd say it's OK to include a band with American members (i.e. Fleetwood Mac, Pretenders, Katrina and the Waves) if the majority of the band members are British.
- List between 50-100 songs for now.

And that's about it. PM me or post your picks below, and happy voting!

Bands/artists with American/non-British members I count:
- Garbage (British lead singer)
- Derek and the Dominos (British lead singer)
- Fleetwood Mac (all members British except for Stevie Nicks - normally I'd say that'd disqualify songs like "Rhiannon" or "Landslide" that are mostly Stevie-focused, but honestly, who cares?)
- Pretenders (all members British except for Chrissie Hynde)
- Katrina and the Waves (all members British except for Katrina Leskanich)
- Olivia Newton-John (dual citizenship)
- Slick Rick (dual citizenship)

Bands/artists with American/non-British members I don't count (or am tentative about counting):
- Bee Gees (I mean, Barry Gibb's a dual citizen and most of their most famous recordings were made in the UK, but they're all Australian, so it'd feel odd)
- Brian Johnson-era AC/DC (again, feels odd since they're mostly connected with Australia and the only British member was Brian Johnson, but if I'm counting all-American-except-for-Shirley Manson Garbage, I suppose you could include Johnson-era tracks if you felt so inclined)

What Difference Does It Make is a good song, but I'm not sure it deserves two spots on the list. I'd participate in this though.

Whoops! I was wondering if I'd accidentally put it twice. And terrific!

I don't even know who else plays on Clapton's solo recordings -- but I know he plays & sings. Regarding Derek & the Dominos, should you use rules not unlike the women’s poll, and let the song pass through if the singer is British? (I'm guessing the average person on the street would simply call "Layla" an 'Eric Clapton song.' For that matter, it's on his Unplugged album.)

That's true, and that song (save for Allman's insane riff) is pretty much Clapton's baby. So I guess they're OK.

Also: what do you think of songs by non-British artists that feature British guests (like Blind or Fairytale of New York)?

Some of my own votes have changed - Kim Wilde (which I meant instead of Kim Carnes) is out and The Verve are in.

But Shirley Manson is Scottish, right?

I use "English" & "British" fairly interchangeably. So you're talking about England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland? (U2 are from Dublin, which is part of an independent Republic ... The More You Know.)

Yep and yep! The whole United Kingdom counts for this list. Allows for more options.

Here's how I'm scoring, just to let you guys know:

1 - 10: 100 points
11 - 20: 90 points
21 - 30: 80 points
31 - 40: 70 points
41 - 50: 60 points

61 - 70: 40 points
71 - 80: 30 points
81 - 90: 20 points

I don't know if you've been following this thread: http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... =21&t=6501

It's difficult to come up with the best scoring system, but step-wise is definitely not the best. There's a huge difference between my number 1 and 10, and I would guess the same is true for most people.

The formula I mentioned was this: 150*(1+20)/(Place+20)

So feel free to use it. Maybe by the end of the discussion we'll come up with a better one, but people mentioned a few that would be better than step-wise. Like Henrik said, Excel does all the work, so you might as well have a more accurate formula. If you have questions about how to make a formula like that work in Excel, let me know.

Ok, so list the ranks in a column, and put the formula in the first cell of another column, just substituting "place" with the first cell in the rank column. Then you should be able to double-click or drag the formula down to fill in for every cell.

If you don't feel like doing that, you could just copy and paste the values it spits out:

The United Kingdom is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The rest of Ireland isn’t in the UK. Therefore, Garbage (Scottish), Simple Minds (Scottish), Van Morrison (Northern Irish), and The Jesus and Mary Chain (Scottish) count, while U2 and The Cranberries (both Irish) don’t.

A good reference is to check Acclaimed Music’s songs lists, which are separated by country and region. (I should note there are errors: Kate Nash, listed as Irish, is actually English).
