Re: Overlooked Songs 2: Round 1 Week 6
To no surprise, my tastes are much more in sync with the forum than the critics most of the time. I figured a good comparison would be the forum's choices for overlooked songs vs. the 9825/10,000 tournament going on simultaneously.
For this week's 9825/10,000 tournament, I gave one 9, seven 7s, three 6s, three 5s and two 4s.
For the Overlooked songs, I gave two 10s, six 8s, five 7s, one 6 and two 5s (and I even find the Cake and Modest Mouse songs intriguing, they just don't work for me personally).
It makes me grateful I discovered this forum several years ago. I don't know what I'd be listening to if I hadn't, since the critics choices are really beginning to bore me (especially most of their choices for the best songs over the past couple of years).
Raekwon - Incarcerated Scarfaces 7

Re: Overlooked Songs 2: Round 1 Week 6
15. Raekwon - Incarcerated Scarfaces vs. 10. Sagittarius - My World Fell Down
In the listen of semi-forgotten songs of the sixties My World Fell Down is certainly a good one.
7. Ten Years After - I'd Love to Change the World vs. 12. Mint Royale - Don't Falter
Another semi-forgotten song from a much acclaimed era wins here.
4. Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) vs. 3. Genesis - Firth of Fifth
These are both way to good to lose. They are also opposites in style, what with the sparse sound of Sinatra and the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink aesthetic of Genesis. I have to give it to Firth of the Fifth, though as the piano there is stunning.
8. Muse - Hysteria vs. 13. GZA - 4th Chamber
Maybe these Wu Tang member songs work better in context, but the big drama of Hysteria gets me more when standing alone.
16. Suede - So Young vs. 1. Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart
My own nomination against easily the weakest track of the week. Cold Little Heart is one of those songs I can't believe was so overlooked by many end of year lists last year. It has so much going for it: great singing, wonderful music, great build-up and a terrific use of background vocals.
2. Cake - I Will Survive vs. 6. Jeff Buckley - Dream Brother
I Will Survive by Cake is a great discovery: a wonderful parody that somehow works as well as the real thing in an off-kilter way. The stilted vocals are great. To be bad for Buckley, as this is definitely one of the best and most overlooked songs on Grace.
9. Sia - Breathe Me vs. 11. The Chakachas - Jungle Fever
Jungle Fever is fun, but limited and runs a little thin after a while. I didn't know Sia did other stuff before becoming a pop star, but Breathe Me is a very solid song.
14. Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash vs. 5. Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down
I don't know why I keep failing to connect with Modest Mouse, who should be right up my alley. I almost always connect with Johnny Cash though, even when he is going Biblical on us.

Re: Overlooked Songs 2: Round 1 Week 6
Raekwon - Incarcerated Scarfaces (5.0)
vs.
Sagittarius - My World Fell Down (6.5)
Very average track from Raekwon
Ten Years After - I'd Love to Change the World (5.5)
vs.
Mint Royale - Don't Falter (6.0)
Didn't know any of these, but Mint Royale, whilst not my style, is very catchy
Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) (7.5)
vs.
Genesis - Firth of Fifth (3.0)
Oh I do like Nancy's voice and this song incarnates all I like about her. I still cannot stand Genesis though.
Muse - Hysteria (8.5)
vs.
GZA - 4th Chamber (7.5)
Classic Muse - Huge bassline, roaring guitars, Matt's voice and heavy breathing - easily a winner. GZA's track is probably one of the best of Liquid Swords, shame it had to face Muse.
Suede - So Young (7.0)
vs.
Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart (8.0)
I do like So Young's musical prowess, although I really had difficulties (and still do, to a lesser extent) with Brett Anderson's voice. Kiwanuka wins it, excellent song, reminds me of Al Green in a way.
Cake - I Will Survive (7.0)
vs.
Jeff Buckley - Dream Brother (9.0)
Knew both of those, I do not really much appreciate the goofy "I Will Survive", preferring the original. I was introduced to the instrumental Dream Brother on an early EP from Buckley. I love the drums, augmented by the bongos and the crystalline guitar.
Sia - Breathe Me (6.0)
vs.
The Chakachas - Jungle Fever (5.5)
Sia's wins it by a smidgeon. Didn't know this track, but it has to be better than what really is a looped musical phrase over very sexy Spanish moaning
Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash (6.0)
vs.
Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down (6.5)
vs.
Sagittarius - My World Fell Down (6.5)
