Songs from movies on the acclaimed music list

Post by BleuPanda »

I got curious today and decided to see where all the Oscar winning songs are on the acclaimed music list...I was actually surprised to see about half of them featured. The 80s were especially well-represented; every song but "Under the Sea" is ranked in the top 10000.

It's notable that songs stopped appearing as frequently as soon as we entered the era where Disney tended to dominate. I wonder if there's a reason for this; some of them are cheesy, but I figured a few critics would have thrown at least "You'll Be in My Heart" on a list by now, and I'm surprised "Let It Go" had no EOY presence in 2013.

What non-Oscar winners are ranked among the top 10000? I'll probably go through and check the other nominees; I'd like to have a comprehensive list, but that could take a bit of checking. The one off the top of my head is Elliott Smith's Miss Misery from Good Will Hunting, which ranks at 1671. And, of course, quite a few of the James Bond themes (how did none of the classic ones win best original song?), and a couple pieces by Ennio Morricone.

Here are the Oscar winning songs that rank on the acclaimed music list; I included a couple contemporary covers where the original isn't listed (but clearly the song is notable enough):
280. Isaac Hayes - Theme From Shaft (From Shaft)
300. Eminem - Lose Yourself (From 8 Mile)
373. Judy Garland - Over the Rainbow (From The Wizard of Oz)

Somewhat related to this, I've often wondered how much songs like "Miserlou" and "Across 110th Street" have been boosted by their inclusion in movies decades after their original release.

The movie came out late November and as we know critics have started making lists by then. Also, if I remember it correctly, the song didn't become an instant hype. It took a couple of weeks, so perhaps until late December. Couple that to the fact that Disney songs aren't regulars on (EOY) critic lists and I'm not surprised.
