The Best Albums & Songs of the 2000s

Post by DaveC »

Decade poll time.

You don't have to have participated in the year polls to vote in the decade poll.

Put your rank (1, 2, 3, etc) into the “rank” column of the excel sheet (below). If you have not heard a song or album, please leave the rank cell blank. Songs/albums you don't rank will be given the same score as the song/album in the middle of your list, so if you don't like a song/album do rank it so that it doesn't end up being bumped up in a way you didn't intend.

Send your completed 2000s poll worksheet to amf2000spoll@gmail.com by:-

This is the formula being used:-

100*(1+30)/(position+30)

If you rank all 150 albums/songs, this is how the point will break down.
1 = 100 points
2 = 96.88 points
3 = 93.94 points
4 = 91.18 points
5 = 88.57 points
6 = 86.11 points

145 = 17.71 points
146 = 17.61 points
147 = 17.51 points
148 = 17.42 points
149 = 17.32 points
150 = 17.22 points

Rank each list from 1 to 150. If you haven't heard them all just rank from 1 to {however many you rank}. 1 being your favourite through to 150 being your least favourite.

This system works well if there a handful of albums/songs you have never heard - as you would not necessarily dislike them, so giving them a middle-of-the pack ranking seems fairest.

If you rank only your 60 favourites, then the other 90 albums would be ranked as equivalent to your #30 and your #60 would be ranked last! Not a good outcome. So as a general rule, rank as many albums as you reasonably can. Especially as the way the formula works, the further down the rankings you go the less difference it makes; The points difference between #116 & #150 is less than the points difference between #1 & #2. So you don't need to worry about precision in your lower rankings; If you've only heard it once and you were not enthused, then ranking it somewhere in the bottom quarter is much better than not ranking it at all.

Far from the song I'll miss the most, but I'm still stunned Kids ended up so low in its year poll !

Shiina Ringo's Funeral Procession is on Spotify in my region, but her name and the Japanese song title are spelled slightly different, and the song is simply named Funeral; it might be the reason you couldn't find it. I think it is the right one.

Does this work for you?:

The points difference between #116 & #150 is less than the points difference between #1 & #2. So you don't need to worry about precision in your lower rankings; If you've only heard it once and you were not enthused, then ranking it somewhere in the bottom quarter is much better than not ranking it at all.
Didn't we use a difference formula at some point where the points difference would be lowest near the middle? Considering there is probably a bigger difference of opinion between 130 and 150 (probably an album you don't care much about and one you strongly dislike) than between 65 and 85 which should be both albums you kinda like.
Reducing the difference as you go makes lot of sense when you rank only albums or songs you like (for an all time poll for instance) but less when you rank a specific set of albums or songs.

I think your argument is a good one. This is the formula that was in use when I started hosting these polls. I don't want to start making up formulas randomly. Would anyone like to propose an alternative formula? I welcome discussion on this, but I won't change the formula unless there is a decent amount of support for it.

I would advocate for win/loss formula similar to AM site personally but those are more complicated and less traceable.

I think difference should decrease as you go down because I think polarizing albums belong higher on the rankings than albums everyone agrees are 'pretty good'.

I like Nassim's idea, I did a poll years ago where the high up rankings barely had a difference in points. Songs or albums say 12-15 would be the same amount of points whereas songs and albums 80-100 would have the same amount of points. The gap becomes wider the higher the placing.

I dunno, if we were ranking among every album people heard I'd agree that it should be more like a bell curve. These final rounds are pre-selected to be albums a lot of people like, so I think for most people the distribution is very skewed and the meaty part of the bell curve falls more in people's 20th percentile. If we do have difference biggest at top and bottom I think it should only be the very bottom.

And like I said, I think loved/hated albums belong way higher on the list than consensus 'pretty decent' albums.

Going through my rankings I'm shocked the New Pornographers went 0 for 3 in qualification. Used to be a popular band on this board, why has their popularity dropped off so dramatically?

Handed in my song list just now. I wrote comments for all entries, but due to little time I had to write most of them this very day. I didn't have time to proofread so apologize in advance for any mistakes (and the odd uninspired entry).

Sorry, I forgot you StevieFan13. I'm away from home in very hot Perth looking after Grandchildren, so I'm a bit unfocussed at the moment.

I hope it is not too late for the Songs Poll... I finally had an opportunity to get it done today and just e-mailed it over.

Just waiting for a final clarification from StevieFan13. Still time for any last minute submissions. Probably starting the rollout in about 16 hours.

Dave, how hard of a deadline is the album deadline? I'll send you my list whenever you need it (but I will keep going until I've heard them all if not given a stopping point :lol:)

I'm rather distracted and busy at the moment (I even got side-tracked in the middle of typing this). So the songs rollout will take a while. The albums will slip by at least a week, but I'll let know when I'm getting close.

Keep me informed of the soft deadline, too! I have a list I can submit, but I'll keep listening and editing if I have extra time...

It's becoming my December/January tradition to spend those months listening to whatever decade AM is currently on...

Also...does anyone have any suggestions for listening to The Black Album that don't involve paying for it or using Tidal?

This is the site I turn to as a last resort. (It's become something of a forum favorite, since others have recommended it as well.)

I'm going to ask for an extension; I can't work on it today, and I'm busy on Sunday mornings, but I'll have the entire afternoon and evening tomorrow to finalize it. Instead of ending at 2 PM CST tomorrow, can it end at midnightish?

No problem. So long as I know I'm expecting a list from you I will wait.

I have received lists from phil & LiveinPhoenix. I won't close the poll until I receive lists (or replies) from Toni, kingoftonga, andyd1010, BleuPanda, and StevieFan13. Take the time you need.

I will send a list too, DaveC! Currently it has around 115 albums, but I had planned to listen and relisten to some more albums until the end of songs results rollout. That said, probably I'll be done with it in the next days, already.
