One Year Later: Your New Favorites from 2016

Post by BleuPanda »

I can't be the only one to have a few new songs really click from the previous year; ones I regret not singing the praise of back when they were being discussed. Figured I would make a topic to bring them up while we're getting ready for our EOY 2017 discussions.

Here's my song list from our survey last year:
Songs:
1. Solange - Cranes in the Sky
2. ANOHNI - Drone Bomb Me
3. Car Seat Headrest - Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales
4. Beyonce - Formation
5. David Bowie - Lazarus
6. Kanye West - Ultralight Beam
7. Radiohead - Burn the Witch
8. Mitski - Your Best American Girl
9. ANOHNI - 4 Degrees
10. KAYTRANADA - Lite Spots
11. Rae Sremmurd - Black Beatles
12. The xx - On Hold
13. Radiohead - True Love Waits
14. A Tribe Called Quest - We the People...
15. Car Seat Headrest - Fill in the Blank
16. Nick Cave - I Need You
17. Chance the Rapper - No Problem
18. Danny Brown - Really Doe
19. Frank Ocean - Ivy
20. Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker
21. Radiohead - Daydreaming
22. Frank Ocean - Nikes
23. Beyonce - Sorry
24. Angel Olsen - Shut Up Kiss Me
25. YG - FDT (Fuck Donald Trump)

Here's my top 25 now, bolding the songs that I had completely overlooked (note that I've since moved the Bowie songs and True Love Waits to the 'correct' years):
1. Solange - Cranes in the Sky (same)
2. ANOHNI - Drone Bomb Me (same)
3. Beyonce - Formation (up 1)
4. Car Seat Headrest - Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales (down 1)
5. Radiohead - Burn the Witch (up 2)
6. Kanye West - Ultralight Beam (same)
7. Angel Olsen - Shut Up Kiss Me (up 17)
8. Mitski - Your Best American Girl (same)
9. The xx - On Hold (up 2)
10. Blood Orange - Best to You (previously unranked)
11. Sampha - Blood on Me (previously unranked)
12. Frank Ocean - Nikes (up 10)
13. Anderson .Paak - Come Down (previously unranked)
14. A Tribe Called Quest - We the People (same)
15. KAYTRANADA - Lite Spots (down 5)
16. Car Seat Headrest - Fill in the Blank (down 1)
17. Chance the Rapper - No Problem (same)
18. Radiohead - Daydreaming (up 3)
19. Bon Iver - 33 "God" (previously unranked)
20. Solange feat. Sampha - Don't Touch My Hair (previously unranked)
21. Drake - One Dance (previously unranked)
22. Frank Ocean - Ivy (down 3)
23. Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker (down 3)
24. David Bowie - I Can't Get Everything Away (previously unranked)
25. Danny Brown - Really Doe (down 7)

So, the trend here is clearly I've started developing an interesting in modern R&B. Similarly over the past year, Sunday Candy has jumped to my #2 of 2015 behind Pedestrian at Best.

As far as albums go, Michael Kiwanuka's Love and Hate has popped in at #17. I've also reconsidered Life of Pablo and have it at #19. Freetown Sound, The Hope Six Demolition Project, and Nicolas Jaar's Sirens have also jumped into my top 25, though those feel more due to slight rearranging than a shift.

It's so good! It's the only bolded song I wouldn't have even encountered last year; I first heard it with Process, but even then, it wasn't until this past month where it really blew my mind. Such a haunting work.

Most of my listening this year has been to albums, so my song list would barely change at all, but albums list would change pretty drastically:

Rank | Old Rank
1 | 1 | Beyoncé | Lemonade
2 | 18 | Sturgill Simpson | A Sailor's Guide to Earth
3 | 3 | Michael Kiwanuka | Love & Hate
4 | New | Maren Morris | Hero
5 | 2 | Radiohead | A Moon Shaped Pool
6 | New | Mitski | Puberty 2
7 | 7 | Sia | This Is Acting
8 | 4 | Bon Iver | 22, A Million
9 | 8 | Kanye West | The Life of Pablo
10 | 5 | Thrice | To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere
11 | 12 | Weezer | Weezer (White Album)
12 | 10 | Angel Olsen | My Woman
13 | 11 | Blink-182 | California
14 | 6 | Macklemore & Ryan Lewis | This Unruly Mess I've Made
15 | 13 | Solange | A Seat at the Table
16 | 16 | David Bowie | Blackstar
17 | 17 | Car Seat Headrest | Teens of Denial
18 | 15 | A Tribe Called Quest | We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service
19 | 9 | Frank Ocean | Blonde
20 | 14 | Kacey Musgraves | A Very Kacey Christmas

One song I discovered from these albums that I would consider for my top 25 is Fireworks by Mitski.

Great idea for a thread!

My main positive changes in Albums:
5 -> 1 | Kero Kero Bonito | Bonito Generation [electropop/J-hop]
13 -> 5 | Noname | Telefone [jazz rap/peaceful rap]
10 -> 8 | Danny Brown | Atrocity Exhibition [experimental hip-hop]
NEW (10) | YG | Still Brazy [gangsta rap]
NEW (17) | Death Valley Girls | Glow in the Dark [indie rock]

Songwise, probably just boosts for songs from these albums.

Man, this reminds me how much better of a year 2016 was (compared to 2017).

Lately I have been really getting into Angel Olsen's My Woman. it's filled with great songs, but one that has not been highlighted much is It's Not Gonna Kill You. It's now my favorite song from the album and one of the great love songs.

Angel Olsen was my #7 last year, but saw her live in a small venue this year and it really brought the songs alive. Don't know if it would increase it's rank, as love those I had above it (& 2 of which, Noname & Pinegrove (not them too) I've also listened to more in 2017 than 2016) but certainly love it more too.

The one that springs to mind is Japanese Breakfast 'Psychopomp' mainly as a result of loving the follow up 'Soft Sounds from Another Planet' in 2017. It appears to have been just outside my top 50 last year. Would probably be in my top 25 now. 'Heft' would be considerably higher than 75 in the songs list and 'In Heaven' coming in above it again.

I haven't actually listened much to 2016 albums this year. Only two that really had a chance to grow on me were two BMAA2016 discoveries, Gogo Penguin and The Pirouettes.
