Ending with two albums I rate a 7.5/10; I'll go with the one that isn't by the biggest band in the world.

Not so tough, actually. This album has always been a personal favorite, so I'm really glad it finally got some real love.

So far looks like I will have my first nomination to win the game. :) Currently sits at my #110 AT.

My best discoveries from the game have to be:
Wishbone Ash - Argus
Astor Piazolla - Libertango
Ride - Nowhere
Sonny Sharrock - Ask The Ages
Agnes Obel - Aventine

An interesting match-up for me, as I didn't vote for Help! a single time in previous rounds, while I voted for So Tough every round. I was perhaps the most vocal detractor of Help! here (even if I didn't hate the album), while So Tough is my own nomination. So what will I vote? Can't you guess?

2. The Beatles - Help! vs. 1. Saint Etienne - So Tough
Jirin wrote:So far looks like I will have my first nomination to win the game. :)
You nominated So Tough too (as did I)? Or do I understand it wrong?

Finally, this game is all about discovery and there were many albums I liked. These were the stand-outs to me (not including albums I already heard before):
The Jam - Sound Affects
Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Are An Eagle
Ride - Nowhere
Big Black - Atomizer
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
The Knife - Shaking the Habitual
Raekwon - Only Built for Cuban Linx... Pt. 2
Sonny Sharock - Ask the Ages
Novos Baianos - Acabou Chorare
John Zorn - The Naked City
St. Germain - Tourist
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - No More Shall We Part
Comus - First Utterance
Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun
The Red Crayola - Parable of Arable Land
Donnacha Costello - Colorseries
Dead Can Dance - Spleen and Ideal
Aggaloch - The Mantle
Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazzlewood - Nancy & Lee
Ween - God Ween Satan: The Oneness
Oscar Brown Jr. - Sin & Soul
Fishmans - Long Season
Manuel Göttsching - Inventions for Electric Guitar
Yuzo Koshiro - Bare Knuckle
Ulver - Perdition City
Astor Piazzolla - Libertango
Thrice - Major/Minor
Barbara - Barbara Chante Barbara

Long list, but I'm glad.

Doesn't look like any of my noms made that huge an impact (save Lion and the Cobra, which actually held on for a pretty long time).

And anoher wonderful edition of MAA, the MAA8. I would like to thank again Brad for his awesome work as host of the game. And as an homage to him I include here the songs where his quotes come from, I hope to have guessed them right. Again (like the previous years) we have a fantastic collection of quotes and a fantastic collection of songs. Thank you very much, Brad!

If you click on the following links you will find live versions or official clips of the songs to showcase the look of the artists. If you prefer to listen to the original studio versions (except on two cases in which Brad alluded to two famous live versions, "does anybody remember laughter?" and "lotta freaks!") this year I've included a gorgeous Spotify playlist.

1.1 Let's go crazy / Let's get nuts! (Prince & the Revolution | Let's Go Crazy | 1984)
1.2 Think (think, think) / Let your mind go, let yourself be free! (Aretha Franklin | Think | 1968)
1.3 Does anybody remember laughter? (Led Zeppelin | Stairway to Heaven (Live) | 1976)
1.4 Maybe someday your name will be in lights / Saying 'Johnny B. Goode Tonight' (Chuck Berry | Johnny B. Goode | 1958)
1.5 Look at That Caveman Go! (The Hollywood Argyles | Alley-Oop | 1960)
1.6 Friends say it's fine, friends say it's good / Everybody says it's just like rock 'n' roll (T. Rex | 20th Century Boy | 1973)
1.7 We'll go back in time to that mystic land / Where the dew drops cry and the cats meow! (Spinal Tap | Stonehenge | 1984)
1.8 Strike another match, go start anew! (Bob Dylan | It's All Over Now, Baby Blue | 1965)
1.9 Children of tomorrow live in the tears that fall today / Will the sun rise up tomorrow bringing peace in any way? (Black Sabbath | Children of the Grave | 1971)
1.10 Hey you, don't watch that / Watch this! / This is the heavy heavy monster sound / The nuttiest sound around! (Madness | One Step Beyond | 1979)
1.11 Come Fly With Me! (Frank Sinatra | Come Fly with Me | 1958)
1.12 Bass for your face! (Public Enemy | Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos | 1988)
1.13 She gon' bring that attitude home! (Disclosure | When a Fire Starts to Burn | 2013)
1.14 Legalize It! (Peter Tosh | Legalize It | 1976)
1.15 Lost on the Freeway Again! (Meat Puppets | Lost | 1984)
1.16 Giant steps are what you take! (The Police | Walking on the Moon | 1979)
2.1 Get up, get out, get into something new! (The Rolling Stones | Dance (Pt. 1) | 1980)
2.2 You need a busload of faith to get by (Lou Reed | Busload of Faith | 1989)
2.3 It's like that, and that's the way it is (Run-D.M.C. | It's Like That | 1983)
2.4 New York, London, Paris, Munich / Everybody talk about pop muzik! (M | Pop Muzik | 1979)
2.5 Have you seen junior's grades?! (Van Halen | And the Cradle Will Rock... | 1980)
2.6 Music ain't nothin' but a people's jam! (Run-D.M.C. | King of Rock | 1985)
2.7 Take a klondike bar from the pop machine / Hey it's ice cream, no not coke! (The Fiery Furnaces | Tropical Ice-Land | 2003)
2.8 Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo... (Glen Campbell | Rhinestone Cowboy | 1975)
3.1 Oh, but Mama, that's where the fun is! (Bruce Springsteen | Blinded by the Light | 1973)
3.2 You got to pick up every stitch (Donovan | Season of the Witch | 1966)
3.3 Remove your shoes, enjoy some fruit! (Devendra Banhart | Fig in Leather | 2016)
3.4 Lotta freaks! (Arlo Guthrie | Walking Down the Line | 1994)
4.1 Up on heaven hill is where I wanna be / That girl that bottle that mattress and me (Hüsker Dü | The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill | 1985)
4.2 This world is going up in flames / And nobody wanna take the blame (Charles Bradley & Menahan Street Band | The World (Is Going Up in Flames) | 2007)
Quarter-Finals You can stand me up at the gates of hell / But I won't back down (Tom Petty | I Won't Back Down | 1989)
Semi-Finals Get up and boogie! (Silver Convention | Get Up and Boogie | 1976)
Finals Be true to your school! (The Beach Boys | Be True to Your School | 1963)

And now my vote...
This year I couldn't be more ambivalent on this final. Like I said before it doesn't feel right to me to have The Beatles winning this kind of game and I'm delighted to see Saint Etienne winning for a quite wide margin. But on the other side, and paraphrasing the last song on Brad's list, I feel the need of being true to my school. And my school in Pop music is The Beatles. When I was a kid I used to go in summer to play with my neighbour Vicent Lluís in his backyard. Sometimes we played some records from the collection of Pepe Toni, his older brother. Our two favourite albums were "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!" and we mimed to the songs playing imaginary guitars with our tennis rackets. I still can remember the back cover of the album, with the rings of Ringo and the cowboy hat of George and with the Spanish credits translating the titles and stating the lead singers of every song (I found this back cover on the Internet). Now those albums are not my favourites by the Fab Four, after elementary school it came high school and then college. But I can't deny that I still enjoy early Beatles a lot. So I can't help! it, I'll vote for...

Moderately Acclaimed Album 8 CHAMPION 2017:

Saint Etienne - So Tough
Image
defeats The Beatles - Help! 12-8

Past Winners:
2010: Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
2011: The Cure - Seventeen Seconds
2012: Fela Kuti and Afrika 70 - Zombie
2013: Jacques Brel - Jacques Brel - Olympia 1964
2014: Jacques Brel - [Ces gens-là]
2015: Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence
2016: King Crimson - Red

Thanks to everyone who nominated, voted or otherwise participated in this year's event.
Special shout-out to Bang Jan for unfailingly posting links and Spotify playlists throughout the year for easy listening access. This effort was sincerely appreciated!

I'll have some follow-up items over the next week or so - as after MA4 a couple years back, I'd like to do a quick poll of the 8 Champion albums to get an idea of how they rank against each other among our participants. Nothing formal - just a fun poll.

Also, I'll post the album nominations from everyone (I'm thinking of only listing those that made the tournament instead of the full list, assuming many that did not make it in this year will be re-nominated. If you'd rather see the full lists, let me know).

Finally, as we near the end of the year, be on the lookout for the 2017 Moderately Acclaimed Album competition, hosted by Jirin. This is where you nominate an overlooked gem from the current year; winner gets automatic entry into MA9.

Speaking of which... we'll be back soon to gather nominations for the next batch of Moderately Acclaimed Albums... I've been putting my list together (and shuffling/re-shuffling the deck) for months already... put it on your radar too! We love the nominations!

Thank you all!

Well, not only did my nomination win, it was also the favourite of my own nominations and a personal top 10 album of all time for me. So I'm very, very pleased as you can imagine. It is threatening to fall off the top 3000 albums next update so it is nice to bring it to people's attention once more.

Thanks for hosting Brad and also everybody else for nominating such a big variety of albums. I'm already wondering what next year will bring up!

Just a fun fact I couldn't help but check while going through the stats of our Album top 3000, the placements on the list of our two finalists:

The Beatles - Help! #133 (with 26 votes)
Saint Etienne - So Tough #4473 (with 1 vote, by Sonofsamiam; I didn't vote in the album poll)

That's a big difference. Hopefully this game will make people remember So Tough during the next Album Poll, although that is still 3 years off, so perhaps not.

Here's how earlier winners did:

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane over the Sea #75 (This one would fail to qualify with today's rules, though)
The Cure - Seventeen Seconds #497 (Not bad, though it does rather well with critics too)
Fela Kuti and Afrika 70 - Zombie #347 (Has become a bit of a poll mainstay on this site)
Jacques Brel - Olympia 64 #539 (Pretty good, especially if you take in account that it is a no-show on critics lists)
Jacques Brel - [Ces gens-là] #848 (Not as good as it's brother, but still great compared to critics)
Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence #365 (An established forum favorite)
King Crimson - Red #250 (A great placement, though it arguably had already many big fans here, as it did well in earlier polls; it also comes close to not being eligible for this game)

So everything has yet placed. Good prospects for So Tough.

I definitely believe there's a "Moderately Acclaimed bump" in the rankings after an album is entered into the tournament - and not just for the winners either. I think just putting these albums out there helps to get them on the collective radar; the more they're discussed, the likelier to make a yearly or all-time list. I don't have scientific proof in this, but it certainly feels that way... and (for the winners at least) your research seems to agree!
