So I hate to be pointing out small errors: it seems that me and BryanBehar are switched now in the Top Fans appearances (this occurred since yesterday when I pointed out that I don't have The Replacements - Tim in my list, and it was corrected).

I have #606. Coldplay | X&Y (2005) as #68 in my ballot, not him.
He has #594. X | Los Angeles (1980) as #87 in his ballot, not me.

No problem! I'm sorry i keep making errors on the "biggest fans" list, especially with you and Bryan apparently. These errors have been fixed

The reason Linkin Park are important, at least to me (and here I'm thinking about my list) is because while they weren't the first rap-rock group, they were probably the most successful (Limp Bizkit doesn't count). They weren't the first to hybridize rap and rock (that's Run-DMC) nor the first famous rap-rock group (Rage Against the Machine), but they were the faces of it in the 2000s and used it to creatively enhance their sound.

I agree that HIStory is a very surprising choice. I remember when it came out, but like someone else said, I assumed it was entirely a compilation.

In any case, I think non-AM albums are the most interesting entries on this list. There is significant overlap between the AM and AMF top 1000 albums so it's nice to see some surprises.

Edit: Stevie, given how much you post on here, I'm surprised you only submitted a top 20, but compiling these lists certainly takes a lot of time. Also surprised that Stevie isn't your favorite artist! :o

Half of this "album" (the entirety of disc one) is just a compilation, and not even a rarities compilation - it's a greatest hits. So I wonder if this sort of album should be allowed. I don't really have a position on the matter yet, I just wonder what rules may apply here. I also wonder if our fellow forum members who voted for this record disregarded disc 1 and just cast their vote based on disc 2. Now disc 2 is generally considered average at best, so if that is what happened, it may indeed be the most surprising placement on this poll.
Yes, my vote was based only in the disc 2.
A very good album with great personal lyrics and strong singles.

I always considered "HIStory" to have been underestimated after being released after the allegations.
I think one's reception of HIStory depends on how you judge an album. If for you 7 great songs elevate an album however good the rest is, you should consider it great. If 5 very meh songs on a 15 songs album is a no go, then it's unlikely you will rank it high.
I still think MJ's 90s songs deserve a critical reappraisal, the albums aren't necessarily great, but he delivered some great singles that would be acclaimed now would they come from, say, Justin Timberlake (2 Bad with a better rapper, Jam with a better rapper, They Don't Care About Us, Stranger in Moscow, Why You Wanna Trip on Me...)
It feels a bit like how so many Queen songs have been overlooked until recently and are now skyrocketing in AM : very popular artists whose great songs have been overshadowed by uneven albums and over hype from the public (and I guess for MJ his private life)

I like HIStory a lot. Happy to see it place. Yeah, it has some lesser songs, but so does every MJ album, IMO.

It was #752. I think that's what surprised me more than anything about Meteora's rank - the fact that it was even higher than its predecessor, which is acclaimed enough to be an AM bubbler.

I'm sorry for the tone of my last comment. I've been as fascinated and thrilled by the rollout of these results as anyone.

There really haven't been that many albums dropping out of the top 500 (I can only think of " I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" and "Original Pirate Material" although I'm sure there's more). With only 48 voters last time around, the results below 500 weren't particularly significant and I suspect the top 500 will have far less surprises than people seem to think. What's really commendable is the huge increase in participation and all the extra work that entailed for notbrianeno. Well done and great job so far

Edit: Whoops! Dumb comment... two more dropped out of the top 500 in the last ten alone. Still, my point remains that I predict very little will change at the top.

Counted 46 so far, though I guess a couple might have left the top 1000 too.
Most surprising among those imo is I'm Your Man, you'd have guess his death and last year's poll would have helped Leonard Cohen albums but I think it's been the biggest drop so far.

I guess I need to listen to Linkin Park. I really have never given them much thought because they seemed to be in that Limp Bizkit, korn, and Papa Roach type sound which I wasn't a fan of but maybe they are different. They seem to have a better fan following than those bands.

What can I say? I typically listen to songs more than whole albums, which I realize is a bit of an anomaly that I'm hoping to fix. And Stevie is! The Smiths are just my favorite band.

There are 47 albums from the 2014 top 500 that have appeared so far in the top 1000, the highest-ranking of which are Original Pirate Material (#324 in 2014, #576 now) and Suicide (#325 in 2014, #647 now). When all is said and done, it'll be interesting to see whether any former top 500 picks fell all the way out of the top 1000. Right now the only one that I can see doing that is Jacques Brel's Olympia '64, which was #457 in 2014; given the long fall of Ces Gens-La, that wouldn't surprise me.

I think the thing that separates them for me is that Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach both represent this bullshit violent machismo. Linkin Park instead tackle the subject of depression and angst, I think in a lot healthier of a way. I think the moods between these bands is apparent in their sound (I don't know much about Korn, and they actually have a fair bit of representation on AM).

I think the easiest thing to compare Linkin Park to is Donnie Darko; both do a pretty strong job capturing the discomforts of being an angsty, lonely teenager. But even though both that band and that movie are successful in this regard, people seem inclined to reject them as juvenile, as if a work must be targeted at adults to be worth anything (even though I know plenty of people who view Linkin Park as a band that helped carry them through their teenage years by finding a band they could identify their own issues through, which I think would make some people reconsider their artistic value). People seem to read their work as over-the-top, but to a lot of people suffering from depression, those feelings can be just as intense. There's a certain sense of release in their music.

Thanks Panda. I will give them a listen. I did sort of like that song they had in the movie Miami Vice lol. I'm sure no one knows what I'm talking about but it seemed like they played that song a lot throughout that movie.

Now Pastel Blues is an album that I would've expected to place a lot higher. It seems like Nina Simone is frequently discussed and heralded as an underrated artist around here and generally performs well in our tournament style games. What gives? (For the record, I placed the album around 150 on my list)

Well, Pastel Blues did jump almost 400 spots from where it ranked in 2014 (#955). Wild is the Wind was #699 last time - don't be surprised to see that album (which, hopefully, has seen a massive surge in general interest since Pitchfork placed it in the top ten of their 1960s poll) in the new top 500.

The only thing I gotta say about this is that I really find it a bit hilarious that my #14 and #15 ended up finishing next to each other, even if in reverse order.

Anniemal absolutely deserves this upsurge in popularity. I just find it so beautiful and emotional. It's also really consistent in quality unlike most pop albums, which is a win.

SonofSamIAm, I'm glad to be a big fan of Pastel Blues with you. Nina rules! :music-rockon:

I haven't had many of my favorites place yet but this run knocked out three great albums. Giant Steps especially deserves more attention, that album more than lives up to its ambitious title and is one of the best indie/alternative albums of the decade. "Barney...and Me" and "Wish I Was Skinny" were hits in some other world...

At this point, it appears that all three of the Game Theory albums that cracked the top 1000 last time have fallen out of it (granted, none of those three albums broke into the top 750, so the drops weren't massive). The album I'm hoping didn't fall out of the top 1000 is Cold Fact by Rodriguez. It was in the mid-700 range last time, so I'm definitely a little concerned right now. I would love to see it in the top 500 though! It's an absolute gem.

Edit: I just realized it's definitely going to appear on the list, as it received a #1 vote and didn't get a mention before the rollout started. This is exciting!

Wow, Drake is going to be a PRESENCE in the next hundred or two, I can feel it.

Holy ----, King of Limbs made it! No doubt now that Radiohead are going to dominate.

Nick Drake? Of course. The Canadian guy might have a few spots in him too.

I like how this is basically a guarantee that The Low End Theory will have a relatively high finish.

When I was a teenager I loved Linkin Park but hated Limp Bizkit. I like neither now but there is a HUGE difference between the two. Linkin Park taps into the disillusionment and disenfranchisement of a teenager who feels completely alienated from their manipulative, consumeristic culture. Limp Bizkit taps into nothing, really. Wanting money to yell about nothing, I guess?

Limp Bizkit taps into the basic human desire to change the radio station.

The only good thing about Limp Bizkit is that their biggest radio hit inspired a parody called "I Did It All for the Wookiee."

I know I'm sworn to secrecy, but I can't let things get tense again (all of the tension happened when I was asleep last night), I'll confirm that there is no Limp Bizkit ahead. You won't have to break somethin' tonite.

blink-182, that's a another band that I chose to ignore. I'll revisit them like Linkin Park. I see that album on a lot of lists so it at least has a lot of appeal to a lot of people. I think because they had some popular song in the late 90s or 2000s can't remember the name of it without looking that I didn't really like.

They're inconsistent, to be sure. I like their early stuff and their new stuff but with a few exceptions the songs from the peak of their popularity are inconsistent (you're probably thinking of All the Small Things, which is good but overrated. Dammit, which is on my alt-rock list, is much better).

Yeah that's it, All The Small Things. That song I got tired of very quickly but you can't judge a group off of a song. Sometimes.

Was hoping beyond hope it could crack the top 500, but 531 is a great spot. I was scrolling so slowly through this past 100 in hopes that each new album would not be Rhythm Nation 1814 - it was quite pathetic, really.

I'm a little worried about the performance of synthpop in general now that Computer World and Dare! have seen their ranks plummet. Hoping that 1999 is immune from this.

I am surprised and impressed that Damn made it before the year-end lists even come out! Kung-Fu Kenny rules, as ever.
