Trend yourself
I found some old 'best album' lists of mine laying around on my computer. A top 100 from 2008, and top 200s from 2010, 2011, and 2012. I thought it might be fun to merge them into one file and look over the trends in my music taste.

(edit: I just looked back at this post and realised what a data-stuff it was. It verges on unreadable.)

Re: Trend yourself
I would do this, but I only have two lists: A shitty one from 2011, and one that I made at the end of last year. I definitely plan on making a new one sometime soon though.
Re: Trend yourself
I find it's incredible that your lists all change so much! My lists are so comparatively static!

Re: Trend yourself
Are there actually any plans for an all time album poll to happen anytime soon? I probably won't participate, but it has ben more than 2 years...Gillingham wrote:I'll try and post here after the next AMF Greatest Album poll.
Splish splash, I was raking in the cash
Re: Trend yourself
I am very curious about this also. I do have a Top 200 that I would like to submit if there is one being held. I'm guessing that the pattern is songs, artist, and albums, one of each per year in a cycle?Sweepstakes Ron wrote:Are there actually any plans for an all time album poll to happen anytime soon? Re: Trend yourself
Well, anybody interested in doing this at some point?
Re: Trend yourself
I finished my listening tournament thingy so good time to update my records and revive this thread. (Technically I haven't finished, Led Zeppelin IV vs Tim Buckley Happy Sad in the final, but will be finished this weekend).
I always find it intriguing to look at my personal trends across years and really understand how my musical tastes have evolved. These rankings are my rankings from March 2008, April 2010, July 2011, August 2012, January 2014, and February 2016.
Current top 20:
Led Zeppelin - IV 72 - 4 - 10 - 66 - 24 - (1 or 2)

I think the current pattern suggests one happens next year.Sweepstakes Ron wrote:Are there actually any plans for an all time album poll to happen anytime soon? This year, if it holds, would be artists.
Me personally, I've only completed ONE Top 500 albums list, that seems pretty static. My #1 is OK Computer, which it has been since I really got deep into music.
So...I don't really think I can do this. Most of my rankings in these polls are based on how I feel at that moment and are not a good reflector of my past. My tastes fluctuate and I don't really think any past trends would be a good indicator of my tastes.

Re: Trend yourself
Now that the 2015 polls are over and Jirin is presenting MAA15 soon, would it be a good time to start the artists poll? I'm not sure if we have any other big polls planned for the near future.whuntva wrote:I think the current pattern suggests one happens next year.Sweepstakes Ron wrote:Are there actually any plans for an all time album poll to happen anytime soon? I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...

This year, if it holds, would be artists.
I think you can start this anytime. The key is to give folks a good amount of time to update/complete their pre-existing lists, or to start a whole new one. So the start date isn't as crucial as the length of the voting period.

Do we have a host declared for the Artist poll?

Re: Trend yourself
I wish I could share something as interesting and complete as yours, my records only go back to 2013! I think your way of ranking albums is really interesting and lends itself to more movement than mine. I do need to re-listen to everything at some point, maybe it can be Olympic years? That would help with keeping everything more up to date.Jirin wrote: Anyone else have records like these they want to share?
Onto my trends! I had made a spreadsheet at the end of 2012 and spent the next 8 months or so listening and giving scores to each song on the album, and then averaging it with an overall score. I just spent an hour trying to wrangle all the data together. I had decided to annex the EPs to a separate sheet earlier this year, so that caused some confusion.
Albums don't really go down that much with my system, as I only really increase their score, but because I insert so many albums into the ranking each year, all but those at the top will end up dropping quite a bit. Also the brackets go (2013/2014/2015) in case it isn't clear.

The average score in 2013 was 18.55 and in 2015 is it 18.8 (this is out of 30). My number one, Homogenic, has a score of 27.8, the lowest, White Light/White Heat is 12.5. I would like to say, WL/WH hasn't been re-ranked since 2013 so it needs a good re-listen (though I'm never going to fall for Sister Ray).

Re: Trend yourself
It's been a while since I added another snapshot. Also coinciding with the end of a listening tournament.
These rankings are from: 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018
Current top 20:
The Beatles - Revolver - 40, 12, 14, 46, 98, 7, 1

Prince - Sign O The Times - 20, 20, 34, 112, 30, 57, 20
Which makes Aretha Franklin the highest re-entry, and Smashing Pumpkins a re-entry after being gone a whole decade.
Highest other re-entries:

An interesting thing about this group is that they are all from 2005-2008. Ys also falls in that range and barely made the list last time. I don't know if these all fell off the list because I had listened to them too much, but mid-00s indie did quite well in this version.

Also, Stankonia sets a new high water mark for rap at #11, Patti Smith sets new high water mark for women at #2, Colin Stetson steals the highest rank for this decade just over Kendrick Lamar and Gang Gang Dance. Re: Trend yourself
Firstly, I want to say how great I think this site is. I so wish I'd found it years ago.
Secondly, I thought I'd share this with you. This is a self-trend that goes back almost 25 years!!
I started it in Feb 1994. I turned 20 that month.
To start with I did it twice a year, then it went down to one a year, and then there was a couple of 7 year gaps!! (I blame the children)
So, the aim is simply to rank who I think is the best 50 artists ever are, at that moment in time.
And way I decided to do it was to rank the best 45 minutes of an artist, as 45 minutes is half a C90 (that'll be lost on anyone under 40!!). I made tapes of some of these "best ofs" - they are still in my attic now - though mostly they were just imagined "best ofs".
So the ranking is only on recorded music, not based on seeing them live.
I also combine artists through an individual, so for example New Order, Joy Division and Electronic are all on Bernard Summer's "best of".
I know some of the rankings weren't scrutinised over that hard (but some were), but I always tried to do them from scratch, so as not to be influenced by previous lists.
As I was thinking of sharing this with you, I took a bit more time over the list I've just done, and I extended it from 50 to 150 artists. I actually wrote the tracks of the "best ofs" down, and ranked them.
I find it fascinating to look back on, hopefully you'll find it mildly interesting too!

Re: Trend yourself
That’s awesome! I wish I kept lists this far back, only for me my 1997 list would be like: Nevermind, Ten, Superunknown...
Re: Trend yourself
I was far more into Brit Pop than grungey stuff. And the first list was done on the cusp of Brit-Pop (so no Blur or Oasis, and a lowly-ranked Suede). By 1997, Blur had had a high of 2, Suede - high of 7 (though 4 in 1998), Oasis - high of 8. They stand at 7, 47 & 51 respectively now.Jirin wrote:That’s awesome! Nirvana started at 34, before falling out of the top 50, and then suddenly re-entering at no. 7 in 1996, then stayed in the Top 20 for the next 9 lists hitting a high of no. 5 in 2002. Then they fell out the Top 50 again! Currently at no. 67.
Soundgarden and Pearl Jam have never made the top 50. Think Soundgarden must have come reasonably close though.
