The best albums of 2017 (update July 15)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 31 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Tinymixtapes; Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

Otisredding usually goes through multiple edits before the post is complete - I think we just have to be patient.

Thanks again Otisredding! Just a question, I've probably got the system wrong, but shouldn't async be at #22 behind Capacity and The Navigator?

Here's the playlist with all the highlights:

Oh dear, Jay-Z is one of those outspoken anti-Spotify artists. I hope the tracks aren't removed from YouTube soon. Though the person who puts them up is named Jay-Z, I'm somewhat doubtful it's the real guy.

The Jay-Z tracks:

Kill Jay-Z: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_Tq6_fPBfo

Smile: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQfAZjw3kdY

4:44: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUaGgwgA7Xs

The Ty Segall tracks:

Warm Hands (Freedom Returned): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqD_4ZvxI48

Orange Color Queen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbEQgKFor9Y

Take Care (to Comb Your Hair): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bycWOz6RwIg

The PWR BTTM tracks (also in the Spotify list in some regions):

Silly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkNOA20GoAc

Answer My Text: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmMOiwLocPQ

LOL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31vSvSIy27s

So, this list of YouTube songs is getting long. Earlier I said that if this list would get too long I would make them into a YouTube playlist. I was actually compiling one just now, but decided against it. The reason is frankly, the inclusion of the PWR BTTM tracks. I don't mind them in my Spotify playlist as my account there is filled with all kinds of impersonal and odd playlists. My YouTube account on the other hand is far more personal. It contains self-made videos and is part of my personal profile on some websites. I could look through the fact that such an account contains a playlist with some music I don't like (and PWR BTTM is not my cup of musical tea at all), but I have no desire to link my account to promote some songs by a bunch of artists who are by all accounts despicable people and seemingly sexual predators. This decision might be a bit childish to some and perhaps I will find another solution some way down the line, but for now we'll have to make do with the list as it is above.

Rob, I respect your decision. At the end of the day, it's your list, and you're putting in a great deal of effort to make this material more accessibel to us. I'm more than happy with a YouTube list of non-Spotify tracks excluding PWR BTTM.

Rob, dude, it's your account.
Your are giving a fantastic service to us all, and if that's the way you feel about that particular band (I honestly didn't know anything about the sexual assault allegations), nobody should judge you for it, let alone call it childish.
I don't write much here, but i do read a lot of the stuff.
Just want to say thank you for the effort you put in the lists. :music-rockon: :music-rockon: :music-listening:
