Sonofsamiam, are songs that were never recorded by an artist but they've played live are eligible? (I am talking specifically about "Because the Night" by Bruce Springsteen)

Even if it doesn't count as a live version, you still might be in luck. It seems as if Springsteen's version of "Because the Night" was released on his 2010 outtakes album "The Promise".

I just begin to make lists the last summer. One year after, I have all the "best of" by decades.

The number of songs varies with the time. For the last three list especially, I put a lot more songs and I slice after.

So, for the top 500, I just picked in these lists.

And I just begin the OST list : 490 songs
And soon, the classical list and the French songs list

I agree, I actually felt like I was missing a lot, so I included my favorite bubbling unders and the RYM top 3000 as well and I kind of like how my list is turning out. I've always felt in the past when I submit a big list that my obscure picks just slip through the cracks. I think the songs that people discover are the ones that a few people voted on, most likely songs that bubble under on the AM 3000.

Songs are more difficult to rank than albums. First, there's probably at least 6000 songs that I consider 4-5 star songs compared to maybe 100-150 albums. Which is the main reason why I limited myself to the two master lists (AM 3000 and RYM 3000). Second, it's a lot more difficult comparing a jazz song to a pop song or even a top 40 hit to a rock classic. Comparing a jazz record to a pop record is difficult as well, but at least you have two fully realized albums. That said, I think ranking songs is much more enjoyable, I have all these songs running through my head where as an album doesn't bring an immediate tune to mind. This is the first time I've really worked hard on the songs poll and it's been pretty fun.

Great lists so far, boys. I’ve planned to listen every list if I can (well, after a few ones I will only listen to the songs I never heard before). I’ve begun with Dan’s list and I’ve enjoyed it a lot. I’ve enjoyed that much that I even have made a Spotify playlist (well, only for the Top 100 so far). Wonderful list, Dan, very influenced by our AM polls, specially the 1900-1949 and World Cup (am I right?).
Next list... Henrik’s! Henrik, wouldn’t you mind to make public that preliminary Spotify list of yours? That would make it easier.

Nat King Cole is fantastic in general, when it comes to standards, he's the best. There will be a few of his songs on my list, Mona Lisa should make the top 100.

Zorg, if you like Nature Boy you will find plenty of other jazz and pop standards (and other great music) in the 1900-1949 AMF poll as well as the 1950s poll. Those polls really are a treasure trove of superb music waiting to be discovered. You should be able to access all individual lists and overall results for these polls from here.

My friends and I have recently finally listened to Antony and the Johnsons, which we've all been quite ambivalent about except for one song, which we all think is one of the greatest songs ever. Fistful of Love! I've rarely seen a AMer mention it! I'm convinced I haven't had a musical experience quite like the time when I first listened to Fistful of Love for a loooooong time. Why isn't it more acclaimed, both among critics and AMers? For me personally, it will definitely be in my top 50, probably even higher. Please give it at least one listen:

I'm really happy to found some piece of music (Jean-Claude Vannier, Sometimes it's snow in april or Eno's works for example).

In the other hand, I'm always torn about inclusion of Film music or classical music (and I put myself two in my list).
For me it's too different and too difficult to classified piece like the ninth symphony of Beethoven for example and a pop chef-d'oeuvre. Or the "Ecstasy of gold" by Morricone, which is one of the most beautiful music I know with any pop song.

Is it possible to create a top "Film music + classical" in Am Music?

Waking up to find a new sonofsam song list is like the music nerd equivalent of Christmas day. I've been working off the old list for a while, so I've heard a lot of the songs toward the top, but there's great stuff (including essentially all of my favorites) throughout. I'll try to listen to as many as I can before the deadline.

Do it like this, if the place is in A1, artist is in B1, and song title is in C1, for example:

="["&A1&"] "&B1&" | "&C1

Making lists for this forum has really helped my Excel skills.

"Kiss" in my first place came to me yesterday. The song was broadcast at "Jazz radio" and I said for myself : "it is too good for not finished first".

Now I'm in kind of this no-man's land where I can't narrow it down to 100 but I can't think of enough I think absolutely deserve to be in the best of all time to get up to 200.

Maybe what I'll do is just, for the next ten days, focus on choosing ten per day that absolutely stand out above the rest and aren't in yet. That should result in the best top 100 list for me.

Wow, a whole ton of stuff to reply to!

First, to Moonbeam, Romain, Honorio, Dan, Jackson, and Henrik -- thanks for the kind words. This list has been a labor of love for a LONG time, and I think I got everything in there. I really love all of those songs, it's like my life listening log. Older classical music was the one exception.

This brings me to Romain's comment as far as film music/classical -- I only included what falls into modern classical (i.e. 20th/21st century, plus visionaries like Satie and Debussy that were late-19th but get that genre applied). I guess the way I got to including it was by first getting into avant garde jazz. From there I found the line blurring into minimalism and general avant garde music, which transitioned nicely into modern classical in general. Over time it has all just turned into "music" for me, so I finally got over that hurdle and mixed it in.

But I completely understand how it seems like a tough comparison. I still don't know how to incorporate older classical music -- I think I mainly need to devote a lot more time to it, as up to now I've only skimmed the surface of the most famous composers. Regardless, a classical-only poll on here would be very cool to see.

Also, Romain, fantastic list! And nicolas too, though I know it's still in progress. Really, I've been amazed by everything that's come through so far.

Last note for Jirin -- if you have over 100 songs on your shortlist but can't find enough to qualify for 200, there is nothing wrong with a list of 137 or something like that. I know it's not a round number, but at least all the songs you truly love are getting points for the final list. Or, alternatively, you could listen to tracks in the submitted Top 100s so far and possibly fill in those gaps.

With my list, Judee Sill's "The Kiss" might make the top 200. I don't have it as high as sonofsamiam, but I think it's going to make my top 100 if not top 50.

I don't have much time at the moment (my school teacher exams are coming) but I took a look at the lists here and wow !! goldmines, with a special mention to Dan, Henrik, sonofsamian and Romain. I've just had a quick glance at your lists but I sure will come back to them.
Making a list with what I know is already a huge task, so I'm not sure I'll have time to listen to the stuff in your lists and include some of it. Well, Dan's list reminded me of how good the Lotte Lenya song is, and I'll have to pick from sonofsamian's good book too...
I try to add 5 songs to my list every day, so I might end up with more than 1000 items in late october..
Making song lists is very exciting. I spent much time on album lists, but song lists are a great pleasure, especially for an oldies guy like me.
Hope to see some more great lists. Honorio, Greg, Jirin, Mindrocker, Miguel, and many others...
PS : i'm happy that "Strange Fruit", "John Wayne Gracy Jr", "Amsterdam" or "Wichita Lineman" are so high in several lists...

This '10 more per day' approach is turning out to be a really good way to organize my thoughts.

It's like continuously playing 'Desert island'. If you could only listen to ten songs the rest of your life, which would they be? Those are off the table, pick ten more. I would say classic rock has a higher proportion of standout songs to standout albums than other genres I prefer, but it also has a particular advantage when it comes to building song lists: Classic rock songs tend to say the title of the song over and over in the song, making it really easy to remember the name of the song.

Whereas for artists like Pere Ubu and Tim Buckley, I just get a general very strong impression from the album without remembering the identity of individual songs.

I think there are a lot of great songs there. Add that to the fact that classic rock (as Jirin says) does have loads of standout songs, and I think the split between classic/progressive is pretty fair.

I meant my comment more in a sense that it surprised me that someone with Starsailor and Dub Housing in his T10 albums would have a lot of classic rock in his T10 songs, not that those songs are bad or shouldn't make anyone's list. "Sweet Child O Mine" and "Gimme Shelter," etc. are all very good songs.

But I do disagree with your assessment of those two artists--"Non-Alignment Pact" and "Down by the Borderline" are T100 songs for me, and I think that especially with Pere Ubu, there are clear standout tracks.
