1. The Postal Service - Give Up vs. Dr. Feelgood - Down By The Jetty
The last time I listened to Dr. Feelgood was at a festival where they were billed ahead of Talking Heads and the Runaways but behind Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds Rockpile.
2. Grinderman - Grinderman vs. Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun
I'm a Nick Cave fan but this Boredoms album is quite something.
3. Arthur Brown - The Crazy world of Arthur Brown vs. Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank
Jackson C. Frank s/t is one of those albums that I like a lot or hardly at all depending on my mood. This week I like it a lot.
4. Love/Hate - Blackout in the Red Room vs. Morrissey - Years of Refusal
Underrated Morrissey.

Votes are bolded.

Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun (9.5)
The Postal Service - Give Up (8.25)
Morrissey - Years of Refusal (8.0)
Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank (7.5)

Grinderman - Grinderman (7.25)
The Crazy World of Arthur Brown - The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (7.0)
Dr. Feelgood - Down by the Jetty (6.5)
Love/Hate - Blackout in the Red Room (1.5)

I must have missed something with Blackout in the Red Room, right? Are they a comedy act? I was getting a lot of Spinal Tap vibes but I can't find anything that suggests it isn't serious.

1. The Postal Service - Give Up (3.5) vs. Dr. Feelgood - Down By The Jetty (3.5) - PASS
2. Grinderman - Grinderman (3.5) vs. Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun (3.0)
3. Arthur Brown - The Crazy world of Arthur Brown (2.5) vs. Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank (3.5)
Very nice surprise with Jackson C Frank, this album reminds me greatly of Nick Drake.
4. Love/Hate - Blackout in the Red Room (1.0) vs. Morrissey - Years of Refusal (4.5)
Always disliked hair metal. Not a surprise for my vote, then.

Years Of Refusal might be meanest album I've ever heard.

It's not your birthday anymore, there's no need to be kin to you!

8. The Postal Service - Give Up vs. 5. Dr. Feelgood - Down By The Jetty
In an unexpected twist, Give Up became my least favorite album of the week and only a handful of albums in this year's poll have I liked less. I mean, I like Such Great Heights, so I should like it's parent album a little, right? Hardly, it somehow becomes too much after a while. Too mawkish if you get what I mean, maybe even too cute.
Down By the Jetty almost wins by default. I like it's type of blues rock and it is a very fun album. Still, I'm also a little confused why of all blues rock albums this one ranks this high on the official list. It's a well executed genre album that doesn't do anything to set it apart from its fellows. Luckily I like its kind.

1. Grinderman - Grinderman vs. 2. Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun
A difficult choice for sure, but there is something about Cave's delivery alone that hardly ever fails. It's also nice to here him make some really different music than with the Bad Seeds (even if all members of Grinderman are also part of the Bad Seeds).
Vision Creation Newsun just has bad luck here. It is a good, sonic semi-ambient album with some very good moments. Maybe if it was a little tighter and shorter it would have out-edged Grinderman, but that seems almost an insulting demand.

3. Arthur Brown - The Crazy world of Arthur Brown vs. 4. Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank
This choice is even harder than the one before and is almost a tie. I have to say that The Crazy World of Arthur Brown is only available on Spotify in a very strange rerelease on which the first half of the album is repeated in different versions before the second half begins. Why anyone would like this approach is beyond me, but it is easy to ignore.
This matchup is really about two polar opposites, one zany and crazy, the other as calm as can be. I appreciate both quite a bit. I went for the unpredictability of Brown here, also because Frank in the end is a little bit too much of the same. Still, the beauty of I Want to Be Alone and Blues Run the Game alone could almost have persuaded me the other way. Those two are peak-singer-songwriter efforts.

7. Love/Hate - Blackout in the Red Room vs. 6. Morrissey - Years of Refusal
It's hard to vote for Blackout in the Red Room, but I have to admit that I had a good laugh because of its misguided lunacy. This is Spinal Tap indeed and it is too stupid to give it a pass, but you have to admit that these guys go for broke. They really seem to be into it. But yeah, there are embarrassing lines like: "She's a knock-down blue-eyed slut psycho-virgin tease". And they mean it, as far as I can tell.
Bad lyrics are rarely the problem for Morrissey and in fact it is his writing that gives Years of Refusal its win. I like the album as it is very solid, but it has to be said that it feels a bit been-there-done-that. Morrissey isn't challenging himself. Still, if it works I can't complain.

Winners in red:

1. The Postal Service - Give Up vs. Dr. Feelgood - Down By The Jetty
2. Grinderman - Grinderman vs. Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun
3. Arthur Brown - The Crazy world of Arthur Brown vs. Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank
4. Love/Hate - Blackout in the Red Room vs. Morrissey - Years of Refusal

I wish I had discovered Blackout in the Red Room that summer when I was a teenager and only wanted to listen to Appetite for Destruction over and over and over. It's definitely an album of a specific time and place, and I appreciate whoever nominated it because it's not the sort of thing you see recommended in this forum very often. I'm not a big fan of Morrissey's solo stuff, so Love/Hate gets my vote.

The Postal Service - Give Up
Grinderman - Grinderman
Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank
Morrissey - Years of Refusal

Favorite album I couldn't vote for: Arthur Brown - The Crazy world of Arthur Brown

Two more of my all-time favorite songs this week with Frank's "I Want To Be Alone" and Arthur Brown's "Fire." This week gave me yet another opportunity to revisit Boredoms. It remains at the top of my list of albums I feel I should like, but continues to elude me...

I've always loved Sublime. Especially Wrong Way.
