Hard drive crash! :((

A few months ago I bought a new computer. It was really fast and there were no problems so it's been a very long time since I made a backup (stupid, I know). Then this morning... Bang! I got a blue screen and when I try to restart the computer it does not boot. Probably the hard drive has crashed. My brother will help me to recover the data tomorrow, if possible.

Today I've been in such an awful mood. I was on my way to add over 2000 more songs to AM and now most of that work might be lost. Nicolas is coming in two days and we're going to have a fantastic week so I want to be really happy but right now I'm frustrated.

You have my sympathy, Henrik. Stupid hard drives! Just when you think you can trust modern technology something inevitably goes wrong. Fingers crossed that the data can be recovered and that your mood will go away.

If anyone understands the pain/frustration you're going through right now, it's me. I'm coming up on about two years since my big hard drive crash, when I lost all my music files.
I've got my fingers crossed for you, Henrik. I really hope you're able to salvage your data.

I'm really sorry to hear that, Matt.

The thing for me is that it's an SSD drive (so this thread's subject title is wrong). I'm not an expert on these things but with hard drives the problem is usually a bad sector and the rest can be saved, whereas SSD discs do not have mechanical components and my disc is just dead. However, the biggest data recovery company in Sweden have told me that me that they have recovered data from 50% of the SSDs so far. So that's my odds and it would cost me about 11000 Swedish crowns (1400 euros)... Still, I will probably let them go ahead because it's 5 months of data. I'm thinking it over just now.

I haven't gotten an answer yet. It's 12 days since they confirmed that they received it, so I hope I will get an answer any day now...

SSD's are great to put an OS on, but for information, SATA is still the way to go. SSD's are much more limited for how many read/writes they can perform.

The part that's hard to do programmatically is reconciliation, right? You can feed a list into a computer, but then that computer won't know that 'Janis Joplin' is the same as 'Big Brother and the Holding Company' or that 'The Beatles' is the same as 'The White Album'.

There might be a programmatic way to detect things like that, even if it requires manually feeding a list of the most common name mismatches.

At least, I'd be happy to volunteer some of my time to look for one.
