R.I.P. Chris Cornell (1964-2017)

Post by Setherex »

According to his representative, rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died at age 52.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Brian Bumbery says Cornell died Wednesday night in Detroit.

Bumbery called the death “sudden and unexpected” and said his wife and family were shocked by it. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

Tragic. One of my all-time favorite musicians.

I'm sure I'm the biggest Audioslave fan here, but I hope there are enough fans of his career body of work to do the next poll in his honor. He made so many great songs that I don't think get the credit they deserve.

Rest In Peace.

This is indeed a bit of a shock. Very young.
I'm not to familiar with Soundgarden beyond the hits (which I like) and not at all with Audioslave. This is perhaps unusual, but the name Chris Cornell will for me is mostly linked to James Bond, because he made one of my favorite Bond tracks: You Know My Name from Casino Royale. I know many Bond fans seem to see this as a minor Bond song, but from the moment it came out is has been part of the top 5 Bond songs. It is definitely my favorite of pure rock Bond songs, and yes, I include Live and Let Die in that.

Here it is, a bit shortened for the opening credits, but I love the imagery that goes with it:

What a shock! I think this is the first death of a major music artist in 2017 (Soundgarden is definitely Rock and Roll Hall of Fame worthy). He had the best voice of any of the 90's alternative singers. Now Eddie Vedder is the sole surviving frontman of grunge's big 4.

My top 10 Chris Cornell songs:
1. Black Hole Sun
2. Hunger Strike
3. Spoonman
4. Fell on Black Days
5. Rusty Cage
6. Outshined
7. The Day I Tried to Live
8. Jesus Christ Pose
9. Like a Stone
10. Burden in My Hand

4. Fell on Black Days
5. Say Hello 2 Heaven
6. Attrition
7. Hands All Over
8. Mood for Trouble

Thanks for stealing all that bread from the mouths of decadence, Chris. Rock on.

Man, this is depressing...definitely died too young. Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog are all great bands. And his voice really was incredible to listen to.

Extremely sad news. Even sadder is that they're starting to report his death as a possible suicide, which is hard to believe - by all accounts he'd been in a great place lately, and Soundgarden was in the middle of a tour. No one can ever know what's going on in another person's mind, obviously, but I would almost prefer if this turned out to be some kind of accident than a deliberate act. No matter what, terrible and tragic for his family first and foremost, his bandmates and other friends, and for all of us.

Every time I run through a list of albums I need to listen to again and get to know better, Temple of the Dog is usually near the top but I never seem to get around to it; looks like I have a reason now, goddamn it. R.I.P.

Favorite Cornell song: "The Day I Tried to Live." I can't really come up with a top ten, because they'd pretty much all be from Superunknown.

He suffered from depression for a while, so who knows if it came back. Nevertheless, he was one of rock's great frontmen, and I'm really sad that he passed away.

Well, definition of major artist can vary, but I'm sure we can at least all agree on Chuck Berry

Ouch!

This one hit pretty hard. I usually don't go into idolatry of people I don't even know, but Chris was somebody special. He had such unique styles and a voice that nobody could replicate. Their music kept me up at night as I was exploring all their sounds and trippy imagery. Their songs kind of made sense, but in a way only a true fan could describe. Soundgarden was often called the first "grunge" act, which I never really got. I always thought of them as a pure alt-metal band.

Audioslave I feel is underrated, mostly from his presence. Rage's big problem for me was Zach de la Rocha, so having Chris take over with their musicians was pretty brilliant. "Cochise" has become my favorite vocal performance by him.

Soungarden had a big comeback in 2010 and a new album in 2012, and it never felt like they were too old. It was a natural return from the band. And their back catalog holds up better than most of their contemporaries IMO, with Superunknown being one of my favorite albums of all time!

But Chris felt like a hero; a mentor. His music spoke to my soul and got me through the hard times in my youth. I had a little friend who could weave these stories and images. He had a great presence in interviews, and on TV when he headlined Hyde Park Calling, it was quite the spectacle. When I just started going to live shows last year, I thought maybe I could get to see Chris or something.

It's sad to see Chris go, and quite the shock. He was in good health and never open about drug use. So what could have possibly happened to him?

His death is now being reported as a suicide by hanging.

Very, very sad day for music. Chris Cornell had a great voice, and Superunknown is one hell of an album.

That's so sad. His music talked a lot about how he struggled with depression when he was younger. Maybe he had a relapse. Eerily similar to what happened to Scott Weiland.

Heartbreaking news. I grew up with Audioslave and Soundgarden in my house, and it was a common musical bond with my father. We were both lucky enough to see him perform solo on the Scream tour, where he and his band put on a monster 35+ song set spanning his entire career. My Dad, who has seen everyone from The Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen in his early 80s prime, still swears it was the best concert he's ever witnessed. Tough to see the death of what I consider to be a legendary performer and songwriter, especially by suicide. Keeping his wife, children, and friends and family in my thoughts

Since I've always loved darker sounding music (which Chris had a lot of), this has always been my favorite song by Chris Cornell. It feels especially chilling today:

Very sad. He certainly had one of the most unique voices in Rock history...

Yes, Chris had one of the greatest voices in Rock (not only 90's Alt Rock). Period.

I don't mean to derail this thread, but on a lesser scale, you could say John Wetton was kind of a major artist in his own way, too?

Then don't. No disrespect to John Wetton, who played and sang on some of the greatest albums ever, or any other recently deceased artist not quite on the same level of fame or accomplishment as Berry or Cornell, but this is a thread specifically about Cornell. I hesitated to even mention Berry in the thread, except that he was such an obvious giant that Dexter's initial blanket statement merited a quick response. Let's stay on topic and not get bogged down in "yeah-but-what-about-Freddie-McSweaty-he-was-pretty-good-too" territory.

Depression may be responsible for some of the most beautiful music there is but that all pales into insignificance when compared to the amount of lives it has ruined. Despite this, I'm grateful for the music Chris created. On the day I heard the news, I spent much of it listening to some of my favourite Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog songs. They were all still as powerful and compelling as the day I first heard them. Cheers Chris.
