Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2017 (update May 15)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 31 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Tinymixtapes; Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

Sad to see Tinariwen go. I haven't heard the album, but I did listen to the highlights here and they were really great.

Last night, I listened to PWR BTTM's album and I totally thought "Answer My Text" was one of the silliest things I've ever heard. I'm a bit perplexed as to how it is a highlight.

I'll bet it stuck in your head, though. It's very reminiscent of Weezer in their big-hooky-and-stoopid mode. It's a classic earworm on a trendy topic, and that's why it's a highlight. Of course, if you've been following the controversy that's erupted around the band the last few days, this might all be irrelevant.

wondering if PWR BTTM's album will be able to keep its spot in the chart or if it will be appearing in any EOTY lists, sounds like just about everyone is cutting off any ties they have with them, including reviewers who once had high regard for the album retracting what they had said

It should keep its rating here on Mega-Critic, since that's based on time-of-release reviews, although its rank will inevitably go down as more and more albums come out. As for the EOY lists, I'm betting it will be as if the album never existed (which for all intents and purposes is almost true already). Any source that does put Pageant on its list will do so either as a "controversy-be-damned-the-music-is-still-great" gesture or as a purely cynical outrage-provoking dick move.

It was announced that Pagaent would be removed from Spotify, but I can still access it. As such, it is also still part of the Megacritic playlist I posted above. My question: can everybody still access these three songs or has the album actually been removed from Spotify in other regions?

It doesn't appear in search for me, and clicking on the songs in the playlist doesn't actually play them.

So it's a regional thing, perhaps only related to the USA. I will leave them in the playlist as is, but will see if I can find links to good versions of them online for the update that will follow next week. YouTube doesn't have them all I'm afraid (unless you count the live tracks).
