Non-English language/rap 2010s music

Post by StevieFan13 »

Hi gang! I'm working on my 2010s list and I'd love to hear about great music from all over the world. There's a great cultural diaspora here and I'd love to find out some of your favorite music of recent years from around the world.

Also, and this can be either local or international, but can I get a primer on some really good rap? Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough, but with a few obvious exceptions (Chance, Kanye, Kendrick, Lupe) I haven't heard much rap that's impressed me this decade, and that's depressing. So hit me with your best stuff!

No, separately. I want to know more about good rap in the 2010s (none of this Future or Lil Yachty crap, nor the ones I already said I knew) and good foreign music in the 2010s.

I don't know much about foreign hip-hop but good hip-hop of this decade is not hard to find. I know you don't like the trap hip-hop or at least you don't like Future from what you've said in the past but heres's some good ones (non-trap) that I like at least:

Bas
Logic
J. Cole
Killer Mike/El-P/Run The Jewels
Oddisee
Pusha T
Schoolboy Q
Shabazz Palaces
Tyler, The Creator
Earl Sweatshirt
Vince Staples
YG

I know these aren't new artists but both have still put out good albums this decade:
The Roots
Nas

I do like what I've heard from some of these (I have heard some Run the Jewels and thought they were pretty great) and I'll gladly hear the rest. Tyler never vibed with me, but I'll give him another shot. And I do like some trap, but not much (particularly "Black Beatles," but that's about it).

If you really liked RTJ , check out Killer Mike and El-P's solo stuff too. Really good.
Yeah Tyler, is an acquired taste. I didn't like his last album very much but Wolf and Goblin are good.

Just kidding.....

Kamaiyah - A Good Night In The Ghetto. This a very smooth album. I really like it mainly because of the beats

LOL. What a waste of talent. But I'll give Kamaiyah a listen (also, check out Nadia Rose's Skwod if you get a chance - quality British rap).

Hmmm I think Lil Yachty is different from the rest. He's fun to listen to.

I think it's important to note that rap music is expanding its horizons, so it doesn't neatly fit into a box anymore like in the Nineties. It has many different moods and textures now, all of which may not appeal to you.

Notable female rappers include CL da baddest rapper, Noname, Sarah Perry, M.I.A., Young M.A.

I agree that Nicki Minaj has been a huge disappointment over her career.

Yeah Noname forgot about her. She's pretty good.

I agree with you that hip-hop is expanding. It's obviously not about lyrics and rhyming skills anymore. I don't that's a bad thing but most of these new rappers can't rap but they use other methods like auto-tune, trap beats, catchy hooks to make them sound better. I try to be open-minded about hip-hop now because it's obviously not what I grew up listening to in the 80s and 90s. I know it will never be as good but it can be different and I'm ok with that.

Well, yeah. Just as not all kinds of rock or pop or jazz appeal to me, some types of rap just aren't my cup of tea. I still think rap as a whole is a great type of music (I don't think you can really call it a genre anymore - there are so many kinds of rap that are basically genres in and of themselves), and not all of it has to have some kind of significance or social commentary. But it does need effort, which I think Lil Yachty lacks. He doesn't need to kowtow to Biggie, but he doesn't need to be a jerk about it either or have such slapdash lyrics.

Dear StevieFan13, I'm perfectly aware that it was not what you were asking for but I made a strange connection and your question made me wonder which non-English Hip Hop albums are more acclaimed. Since (I think) there are not lists about the subject I went to Rateyourmusic to find out a quite odd list with 18 Polish albums on the Top 50 and few presence of Latin American, African and Asian albums. Anyway I selected the highest ranked album of the 12 different nationalities featured in the Top 50 and I did some listening, enjoying some of the albums. I liked particularly the Spanish album (one of the favourites of my son Miguel), with MC/poet Rafael Lechowski backed by Glaç, a Jazz band.

I don't even mind a tiny bit, Honorio - I love learning about music from all eras, so this is very helpful and informative.

Plenty of recommendations here that I need to listen to.

Another song that has a little bit of a hip hop feel to it (although it’s perhaps more “new chanson” than hip hop) is Belgian artist Stromae’s “Formidable” from 2013.
In 2012 the Colombian group Ondatrópica released an album that combined cumbia rhythms with a variety of other styles, including hip hop. A good example of the use of hip hop / Latin rap in their music is the song “Suena”.
Taking hip hop out of the equation, there are loads of traditional world music from the 2010s that is worth checking out. A good starting point, as always, is music from Mali. Here’s Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabaté’s “Sabu Yerkoy”.
A personal favourite of mine from this decade is Blick Bassy’s gentle and beautiful “Aké”. Blick Bassy is from Cameroon and this song was released in 2015.
My favourite song from 2017 so far that is not sung in English (well, only the words “give me a reason why” is sung in English – the rest is sung in the Nigerian language Ibibio) is Ibibio Sound Machine’s “Give Me a Reason”: those beats and synth lines make me want to dance every time I hear the song.
...will keep us together.
