___ I dislike that everyone else likes.

Post by StevieFan13 »

Artists:
- Eagles
- Future
- KISS
- Rod Stewart
- Aphex Twin
- Coldplay
- The Four Seasons

More specifically, artists I don't actively dislike but find a tad overrated:
- Ramones
- Sex Pistols
- Joy Division
- Neil Young
- Rihanna
- Slayer
- Sonic Youth
- Joanna Newsom
- James Taylor

Songs:
- Eagles - Hotel California
- Coldplay - Paradise (though a lot of people on this forum seem to not like it, even the Coldplay fans)
- Beyonce - Formation
- Lana Del Rey - Dark Paradise
- The Weeknd - The Hills
- Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy (Pappy Mix)
- Billy Joel - Just the Way You Are (I dislike this even as a huge Billy Joel fan)
- Radiohead - Idioteque
- Coldplay - Fix You
- Migos - Bad and Boujee
- Archie Bell and the Drells - Tighten Up
- Bee Gees - How Deep is Your Love
- Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A.
- Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
- Pearl Jam - Jeremy
- The Beatles - She Loves You
- Sia - Chandelier
- The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown
- Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay

Songs I don't hate but still find a tad overrated:
- Oasis - Wonderwall (good in spurts)
- Blur - Out of Time
- The Beatles - A Day in the Life
- 50 Cent - In da Club
- The Doors - Light My Fire
- Beyonce feat. Jay Z - Drunk in Love
- Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence (I prefer Mrs. Robinson, Cecilia, and The Boxer)
- Pink Floyd - See Emily Play
- Kanye West feat. Pusha T - Runaway
- Adele - Hello
- The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog
- Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen
- Nirvana - Lithium (it's great, just not my favorite Nevermind track)
- Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (beautiful, but compared to Lover, You Should've Come Over? Not quite as good)
- AC/DC - It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n Roll)
- James Taylor - You've Got a Friend
- Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
- Randy Newman - Sail Away

Feel free to list your own. (I am already familiar with babydoll's strong vendetta against AC/DC.)

Artists I don't like:
R.E.M.
Joy Division
Van Morrison
Drake

I'm coming around on A LITTLE, or I at least understand-ish the appeal:
The Smiths
My Bloody Valentine

There actually aren't very many. It could be that when I don't like an artist I quickly move them to the trash bin (metaphorically), so I can't even remember who they are.

I'm not huge on Joy Division or Drake either, but both have enough good stuff to keep me from hating them. And you're not alone about the Smiths - personally, they're my favorite band, but I know a bunch of people who despise them.

Can't say I care for that one either. And between Purple Rain and Bohemian Rhapsody, it seems you don't care for big classic rock anthem-type songs.

Oh yeah, I forgot Joanna Newsom (and, for don't hate but can't get into, I'd also say Wilco, Grizzly Bear, Sigur Ros, and Animal Collective to an extent). And for the record, I completely understand not being into Depeche Mode, Tom Waits, or Pavement. They're hard sounds to adjust to.

There are tons, but I'll start with these. The ones I didn't comment on are just totally baffling to me. If I had never come across this site, I wouldn't have been surprised if they were unranked.

Artists

Aphex Twin
Kraftwerk - I understand the innovation and influence, but I don't enjoy listening to a single one of their songs.
Pet Shop Boys
Joy Division
Massive Attack
Funkadelic/Parliament
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band
New Order
My Bloody Valentine

Albums

Trout Mask Replica
Loveless
Closer
Fun House
Blue Lines
There’s a Riot Goin’ On
Horses
Stankonia and Speakerboxxx / The Love Below – I love Hey Ya, Ms. Jackson, and a couple of other songs, but the albums are so long and I can’t stand most of the other songs. They strike me as extremely inconsistent.

Songs

Strange Fruit - I get the social/political influence, but I've never like Billie Holiday's voice, and I don't like anything about the music in this song.
Love Will Tear Us Apart
Born Slippy .NUXX
Unfinished Sympathy
God Save the Queen - Again, political, but nothing I enjoy about the music
Ghost Town, Blue Monday, What’s Going On, Formation – I don’t dislike these, but I’m still baffled by their astronomically high rankings.

I'll admit, I was also surprised to see Ghost Town that high on AM, though I do like it a lot. And a shame, as Parliament's one of my favorite bands.

The song's been overplayed to death. I used to like it but now every time I hear it I just get bored.

Go right ahead. There's plenty of Dylan I'm not a fan of. Especially Lay Lady Lay.
Dylan sort of has three voices: reedy but OK (Like a Rolling Stone, Subterranean Homesick Blues), actually attempting to sing (Masters of War), and goddamn annoying (Lay Lady Lay, Pay in Blood).

Musicians whom I wouldn't mind being switched out of the AM top 100 artists list. (Opinion usually based on one or two albums, plus maybe a single. I need to explore Daft Punk further, and I guess Massive Attack, Arctic Monkeys, and Pulp.)

35. Tom Waits (obviously won't happen)
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Blur
Beck
Oasis
LCD Soundsystem
The Jam
Bottom 4th of the top 100: Wilco, AC/DC, Portishead, Primal Scream

You like AC/DC? Goodbye.

Also you prefer "Cecilia" to "The Sound of Silence"? That is the one Simon & Garfunkel song that really makes me annoyed at them for thinking this was good enough to release.

A guy can have a bit of variety, and while some may get their kicks from 15-minute Icelandic ambient songs, I sometimes just prefer a good riff. Yes, the lyrics are oftentimes quite stupid, but shouting along to "BUT WE'VE GOT THE BIGGEST BALLS OF THEM ALL!" is just a blast. I sort of regard them in the same way as The Darkness, Electric Six, or Queen at their goofiest: just big, enjoyable music without a ton behind it.

Again, I like it because it's catchy. But I probably should've said Scarborough Fair instead of The Sound of Silence, and I actually enjoy them both. There isn't really a S&G song I don't like. Paul Simon solo is a bit more iffy.

I have to tell you that if you ever do a Simon & Garfunkel/Paul Simon poll, "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" is going to be #2 on my list, probably for all time. Only "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is better out of their oeuvre, imo.

You do you! I think it's pretty but a little too slow. If I were to run that poll, mine would be:
1) The Boxer (#7 of all time)
2) Mrs. Robinson (#200 of all time)
3) Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard (#478 of all time)
4) Bridge Over Troubled Water (#5665 of all time)
5) You Can Call Me Al (#1,000,000 of all time)
6) Cecilia (#800 of all time)
7) The Sound of Silence (#8+10/19^2 of all time)
8) Loves Me Like a Rock (#3.14 of all time)
9) El Condor Pasa (#George Clinton's Hair of all time)
10) Kodachrome (High 6/10)

A lot of artists fit into the category of "not really getting the appeal", like James Blake, but the only two artists like this I legitimately hate are Bon Iver and The Black Keys
