MCCh 2017 (07) April 30

Postby Otisredding » Sun Apr 30, 2017 7:47 am

The best albums of 2017 (update April 30)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 31 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Tinymixtapes; Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

Sad to see Creeper's "Eternity, In Your Arms" not make an appearance despite an 89 on metacritic. I'm curious, do you happen to have its score from this chart?

There has to be an error in your calculation for Run The Jewels 3. Based on the reviews that it has gotten, I wouldn't expect it to be even close to Damn, and shouldn't be ahead of A Crow Looked at Me, either.

Here's a look at the average scores for the top 5 albums:

Damn:
Metacritic: 95
Any Decent Music: 90
Album of the Year: 91
Average: 92.0

A Crow Looked at Me:
Metacritic: 96
Any Decent Music: 88
Album of the Year: 90
Average: 91.3

Run the Jewels 3:
Metacritic: 88
Any Decent Music: 85
Album of the Year: 86
Average: 86.3

Process:
Metacritic: 86
Any Decent Music: 81
Album of the Year: 84
Average: 83.7

Pure Comedy:
Metacritic: 85
Any Decent Music: 80
Album of the Year: 82
Average: 82.3

New update:

The Ty Segall tracks:

Warm Hands (Freedom Returned): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqD_4ZvxI48

Orange Color Queen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbEQgKFor9Y

I'm still missing Kendrick Lamarr and Future Islands. Do you have highlights for them, Otisredding?

Metacritic, Anydecentmusic, Albutoftheyear and Metacriticchart work differently.

For me, obviously, the most accurate is Megacriticchart:

A) We analyze media from all over the world
B) Consider the number of scores received, and not only the average scores

I do the work with the criteria and the conditions that everyone knows. I think these criteria are very appropriate.

And I can say that MCCh (update december 31) coincides largely with the results of the end-of-year lists (I would say more than Metacritic, Anydecentmusic, Albutoftheyear)

Anyway, nothing happens. This is not an exact science.
