MCCh 2017 (05) March 31

Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2017 (update March 31)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 31 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Tinymixtapes; Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

Sorry I'm a day late. Yesterday I didn't have time behind my laptop. Here is the new update:

The Ty Segall tracks:

Warm Hands (Freedom Returned): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqD_4ZvxI48

Orange Color Queen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbEQgKFor9Y

Take Care (to Comb Your Hair): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bycWOz6RwIg

Big jumps for Laura Marling and especially Blanck Mass.

I'm familiar with Mount Eerie's earlier albums and he always was one of those artist who I thought would never get all that much attention. Really surprised to see him delivering the top album up til now (not counting Run the Jewels, which I still think shouldn't). Really looking forward to listening to it, though I hardly have time enough to listen to Moderately Acclaimed, so everything else remains far behind, sadly.

Someone has to :D

I'd like to point out for all that haven't given it a listen yet - Mount Eerie's album is, by all means, an incredible piece of art. The fact that it isn't #1 on this list is nothing short of a brash critical error that will be fixed with time.

But, as Rob said, I don't agree with RTJ's inclusion in this list either anyway ;)

Allow me to be a different kind of "that guy."

Yes, technically RTJ3 is a 2016 release, since it dropped digitally on Christmas Day. But it didn't appear on a single 2016 EOY list that's included on the spreadsheet. Everyone is clearly saving it for their 2017 lists - I seriously doubt it will miss any of them. I think the album very much deserves to be included on Mega-Critic, even though I'm also surprised that it wasn't overtaken by Mount Eerie.

On another note, I continue to be baffled by the exclusion of Valerie June's The Order of Time.

I know the reason of the inclusion of Run the Jewels on MegaCritic, it has been stated before. But it feels unnatural and not quite right. But in the future, when all these albums have made their way on the official AM All Time list, Run the Jewels 3 will count as a 2016 release, so I'll take peace with that.
