Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 (MA3) Round 2.2
This is easy
1. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes vs. Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert
2. David Bowie - Diamond Dogs vs. Astor Piazzolla - Tango: Zero Hour
3. James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up
This is very good but I'm sorry, I'll stick with Otis.
Captain Beefheart - Lick My Decals Off Baby
Less free and more focused than Trout Mask Replica, a little bit more accessible. I liked this so much that I started surfing youtube looking for live performances. That's how I spent Monday evening.
4. Stina Nordenstam - And She Closed Her Eyes vs. Arvo Pärt - Tabula rasa

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 (MA3) Round 2.2
My choices in blue
1. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes vs. Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert
I know I should like Tom Petty, I like the musicians he likes (Dylan or The Byrds to state the obvious), I like his honest and humble attitude and I've enjoyed quite a lot the two albums on the game from different moments on his career (youth on "Damn the Torpedoes" and maturity on "Wildflowers"). But he always come across to me as nothing special, as ordinary.
Just the opposite as "The Köln Concert" that comes across as extraordinary. A fascinating and mesmerizing work that fuses easily, beautifully and passionately jazz and classical. And the most amazing is to know that it was completely improvised at that very moment!
2. David Bowie - Diamond Dogs vs. Ástor Piazzolla - Tango: Zero Hour
My friend Pepe is going to kill me for that but my vote goes to Piazzolla. I like a lot "Diamond Dogs" and I still think it's underated by the critics but I partially understand why it don't get the same credit as other 70s Bowie albums. Bowie seems uncertain about the path to follow, his attempts on soul are not as brilliant as the ones on the next album ("Young Americans") and his last forays on glam-rock are not as ferocius or original as the ones on the two previous albums (except maybe "Rebel Rebel" and the title song). And the apocalyptic imagery can be percieved as forced unlike other songs of the glam-era Bowie ("Five Years", "Aladdin Sane (1913-138-197?)").
So a (relatively) minor Bowie loses against the major "Nuevo Tango: Hora Zero", the undisputed masterpiece of Ástor Piazzolla. Well, not completely undisputed, "Libertango" (1974) was almost equally impressive. Anyway, his trademark open and adventurous approach to tango is perfectly showcased here.
3. James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up vs. Captain Beefheart - Lick My Decals Off Baby
I'll begin just like in bracket 1: I know I should like Captain Beefheart, I like his uncompromising attitude and I like the artists he influenced (Tom Waits to state the obvious) but everytime I try to listen to him I end recognizing my personal unability to enjoy his music. I'm uncool, I know, but what can I do?
James Carr on the other hand does not carry the torch of the innovation, in fact he sounds quite similar to other soul singers of the era. He carries instead the torch of emotion, of feeling and, ahem, soul. Just listen to "The Dark End of the Street" to get the perfect definition of "deep soul".
4. Stina Nordenstam - And She Closed Her Eyes vs. Arvo Pärt - Tabula Rasa
Henrik, I'm so sorry for not having been able to find the time to update my list of 1994, I would have included for sure two of the albums you gave me as a present when you came to my home, The Cardigan's "Emmerdale" and, of course, "And She Closed Her Eyes". I love Stina's album and its sound, in Kelvin Hayes' words for allmusic "dreamy, atmospheric and, at time, angelic".
But my vote goes to Arvo Pärt because of its deepness, comparing both albums I can help to see Stina's one as more superficial, the music on "Tabula Rasa" is breathtaking, not only the more avant-garde title track but also simpler but moving pieces like "Fratres" or especially "Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten".
Mmm, never though of myself as a fan of instrumental music but 3 of my 4 choices were purely instrumental albums.

1. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes vs. Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert
I just can't get into The Koln Concert. I read all the other comments on this thread and I feel like I'm missing something, but this sort of structureless improvisatory style just ends up boring me.
2. David Bowie - Diamond Dogs vs. Astor Piazzolla - Tango: Zero Hour
Just one of the quirks of the bracket system - I voted for Bowie and against Piazzolla in Round 1, but Piazzolla's deeply personal take on tango just slightly bests Bowie's last great foray into glam rock.
3. James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up vs. Captain Beefheart - Lick My Decals Off Baby
Such different albums. I don't always choose the avant-garde over other options, but in this case Beefheart's growl appeals to me more.

1. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes wins over Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert
Very tough choice for me as I really enjoy both albums very much.
4. Arvo Pärt - Tabula rasa wins over Stina Nordenstam - And She Closed Her Eyes
Arvo Part has been one of my two favorite revelations so far in the moderate competition
