Music of Hip Hop: Nominations

Post by ordinaryperson »

“Emerging mainly on the eastern coast of the United States in the late 1970s, hip hop is a form of music emphasizing rhythmic beat patterns and spoken delivery rather than harmonic melodies and sung vocals. Much of hip hop's roots can be traced to Deejay, a form of Reggae music that an immigrant DJ Kool Herc hoped to emulate in the Bronx borough of New York City. The style quickly took over in uptown neighborhoods such as Harlem and Queens, where many enjoyed the loose, afro-centric nature of the parties Kool Herc would put on. Adapting the format to Disco and Funk breaks rather than the reggae Herc was used to further enhanced the genre's appeal in urban communities.

The music quickly took over in New York and Connecticut while expanding across the United States and eventually other countries through the 1980s and 1990s. Eventually incorporating Soul and Jazz breaks into its musical lexicon, hip hop as it is known today continues to incorporate sampling of both popular and obscure tracks from the past and present that one or more MCs rap lyrics over in a stylized, rhythmic response or addition to the beat.”

NO! Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love" and Rihanna's "Umbrella" shouldn't be eligible. They are pop songs that happen to have a rapper feature on them.

I'm sorry, but it's how I feel.

I agree, actually. I'd actually also debate including Crazy - does it count as hip-hop? I know Cee-Lo is a rapper and Danger Mouse has produced rap, but the song is more pop/soul than anything else.

Wow! I didn't even notice these. Yeah these are huge mistakes. I'm down to re-submit when ordinaryperson decides which new songs to add to the list.

Andre 3000 rapped more on "Hey Ya!" than Drake has his entire career.

Regardless of if those three do get removed, I'm pretty sure you forgot to include "Empire State of Mind". It ranks higher than Ms. Jackson, Stan, Bring the Noise, Umbrella, Fuck tha Police and Fight For Your Right To Party.

(Assuming you used the unofficial update, which, considering To Pimp a Butterfly was included, is what I'm guessing we're using for these.)

Also in the realm of "rap technicalities," one spot higher than King Kunta is Hotline Bling.

Wow, all seven of the songs I nominated ended up in the tournament! How did that happen? Did those most of them appear on multiple lists? I'd be highly surprised if somebody else ranked "Suicidal Thoughts".

There weren't a lot of doubles and I still needed about 20 songs in order to reach 64. So I went down the all the nominations in order of when they were sent to me.

Would probably have been nicer to take everybody's 2nd in order, then everybody's 3rd...

I'm curious how the seeding was done for these brackets. I'm a little surprised to see It Takes a Nation of Millions and To Pimp a Butterfly meeting in the first round.

I agree with this. That's how I understood the rules when I read them (probably reading what I would have preferred into it, rather than what it said).
