POLL: Deciding the genre tournament
Since we are nearing the end of the 1992 tournament the question of what should we do next has entered my mind. On the semifinals I asked the forum what they wanted to do next. They overwhelmingly chose to do a tournament on genres. For this thread I created a poll featuring genres that are eligible for a tournament or have subgenre eligible. I also want to ask if you want to do a tournament on a subgenre or a main genre? I want to start this early in order for people to prepare for the tournament.

Well, damn it, I wanted to do disco, but that's not featured here. Such an underrated genre.
And what is descriptor?

Re: POLL: Deciding the genre tournament
I intended do subgenres for the tournament and I created this poll in order to narrow it down. Disco is a subgenre under dance, so if dance wins this poll disco is a possibility but it will have compete with other dance subgenres such as EDM and Alternative Dance in a different poll.babydoll wrote:Well, damn it, I wanted to do disco, but that's not featured here. Descriptor is genre that contains subgenres that don't fit in any other music category.

Allmusic considers Disco as contemporary R&B:

Actually, many of the above genres overlap with each other so expect confusion.

Re: POLL: Deciding the genre tournament
I don't mind which we go for, the aim being discovery. Definitely should go for sub genres, the scope within a genre is far too wide to get a meaningful result.

Re: POLL: Deciding the genre tournament
Are we considering soul and funk music to be under the R&B genre as well?

Re: POLL: Deciding the genre tournament
I think Nassim's list is far more interesting... I wouldn't know where to start with rock alone... far too many sub-genres and voting in the same game Low (slowcore) vs Megadeth (Thrash Metal) would render the idea of "genre voting" useless me thinks.
On that subject, here are the sub sub genres for Thrash Metal : Crossover thrash. Groove metal, death metal, black metal, power metal, metalcore. It says a lot...

Re: POLL: Deciding the genre tournament
I agree... Rock is way to vague and would need a secondary vote. But so many great categories.
In a way I am hoping that r&b wins, could be a fun tourney (though I voted for industrial rock). I do think we could have a secondary vote to really narrow things down. Something like this.
Alternative R&B / neo-soul
Synth Funk / funk
Rhythm & Blues
southern soul / northern soul
new-jack swing
Motown

Yes, ordinaryperson said he would do a 2nd poll after that one to narrow down the genre.slick wrote:I agree... Rock is way to vague and would need a secondary vote. But so many great categories.

Re: POLL: Deciding the genre tournament
Voted Electronic, the one genre my music library lacks. Narrowing down the genre piqued my curiosity: House, Techno, Trance, Downtempo, Electronica, Jungle/Drum n' Bass, Experimental.
