Top 25 Chuck Berry Songs (start voting!)

Post by StevieFan13 »

As is standard AM procedure, although Kanye may have won the poll, he'll have to be postponed until next week to honor the recently-deceased...

My Ding-a-Ling (175 points)
Promised Land (150 points)
Come On (125 points)
Downbound Train (100 points)

Several of these songs have more or less the same intro.

7. Too Pooped to Pop [= best title]

That's the only reason I was hesitant to do this poll - I knew for a fact that we wouldn't hit 30 songs. But he's dead and he was important.

Well, he's probably one of the 10 or 15 greatest artists of all time.

I agree. But when you boil his influence down, there's only about a handful of songs (very important songs, but not many) that people cite as his very best. The best of these changed music forever, but even the essential collection of his music only featured 28 songs.

Which I must say left out a couple of his very best songs, "You Can Never Tell" and "Promised Land".

And, of course, the musical masterpiece "My Ding-a-Ling." For what it's worth, I kinda like that one.

I wasn't going to participate, but since "Downbound Train" literally has no votes, here I go. (This especially surprises me since others have commented that many of his intros sound alike, and this one shows his range. Seriously, am I the only one who likes this song?)

1. Downbound Train
2. Johnny B. Goode
3. Roll Over Beethoven
4. Drifting Heart
5. No Particular Place To Go
6. Memphis, Tennessee
7. Brown-Eyed Handsome Man
8. Maybellene
9. School Day
10. Promised Land

Thanks, StevieFan. Would you be interested in a Prince poll sometime around April 21?

That could be fun. Next week is Kanye, since he would've gone this week until Chuck Berry died.
