You might want to extend that. That's some pretty ambitious project there.

Otherwise, I don't remember, we vote for 10 or 15 eligible songs for a top 30?

Don’t know if this will work, but I’ve also messaged an old schoolmate asking for a top ten. (I listen to Morrissey; he basically lives by him.)

So as I understand it, there's not even necessarily a need to rank the songs? You're essentially counting mentions? This may work better for my friend.

Basically, but if you want to rank 'em, that's fine too. Regardless, I'm still only counting ten-fifteen.

I only have a top 500 songs of all time made up. If I managed to make a top 100, a good chunk of these would make the 501-1000 cut.

1. There is a Light That Never Goes Out (my #5 song of all time)
2. This Charming Man (my #38 song of all time)
3. How Soon Is Now? (my #148 song of all time)
4. Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
5. Panic
6. The Boy With the Thorn In His Side
7. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

A ranked list from my friend Robert Thale, in Greensboro, NC:

1 - William, It Was Really Nothing
2 - You've Got Everything Now
3 - Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
4 - Stretch Out And Wait
5 - This Charming Man
6 - The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
7 - Well I Wonder
8 - Suffer Little Children
9 - I Don't Owe You Anything
10 - Girl Afraid

Neither of us had the Smiths on vinyl, but incidentally, both of our #1s were on the same 45 single.

I'll wait another few hours so that any last-minute stragglers can get their picks in. Next one will be more efficient, I promise (though I am happy with There is a Light That Never Goes Out currently taking the top spot...as well it should).

- Unsurprisingly, The Queen is Dead swept this one, with 7 tracks in the top 30.
- Surprisingly, due to my imperfect scoring system, "How Soon is Now?" is only #5 (still wouldn't imagine it falling any lower), and the top 3 was an unpredictable horse race the whole time. But, in less of a surprise, one extra vote was all it took to put "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" in its rightful place at #1.
- Funnily enough, two of the songs Mojo classified as among the Smiths' worst, "Frankly Mr. Shankly" and "Unhappy Birthday," both made the cut. "Sheila Take a Bow" wasn't even on their list (which is wrong).
Thanks for voting! See you next week for either an icon (mine to be exact) or the greatest Swedish band with a palindrome name.

Fun poll, but the results are rougher than I had realised at first. Initially I was surprised at The Boy With The Thorn In His Side outperforming How Soon Is Now?, so wondered who the biggest fans of the former were. Looking back over individual lists, only three lists rank The Boy ... the higher of the two songs, and no list omits them both.

My ranking system was based on mentions, and the more lists that featured "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side," the higher it placed. Next one's going to be more about placement than about sorting them alphabetically (ultimately, "How Soon is Now?" featured on fewer lists than "The Boy...", even though it was always usually ranked high).
