Hopeful AM Collab Lists (Looking for more list ideas!)
Aside from the Top 30 R.E.M. Songs in progress right now, here are some other lists I hope we can put our heads together for. In each case, people would list their personal picks (or, in some cases, rank the given options) for each topic, then once a formal list has been drafted, different people can take care of different blurbs.
Here are a few I've been thinking of - feel free to chip in lists you've always wanted to get multiple people collaborating on!
For clarification, it'd be a new list each week, give or take blurb-writing time.
- Top 50 Rolling Stones Songs
- Ranking Every Oasis Single

A lot of these sound fine, but we'd definitely need more than a day. It sounds like you already want to wrap up the R.E.M. list. Our quicker sort of lists on the forum usually run for a week.

Oh, nothing that amazing, at least off the top of my head. I'm not a songs person but these lists are pretty interesting. I might participate in a few of them.

Thinking I'll do a few rap ones too (Public Enemy and Tribe both deserve lists - particularly the latter after that disappointing top 30 XXL posted). Any you'd also suggest?bootsy wrote:I'm not a songs person but these lists are pretty interesting. I might participate in a few of them.

Green Day does not warrant a top 50 songs poll. Try 30.
Stevie Wonder also does not warrant a top 100 songs poll. WAY, WAY TOO MUCH.

Top 50 for Stevie then? Guy's got a big discography. I have no idea how so many publications only do top 10s for him when he's got a bottomless pit of great songs.

Also, babydoll: got any good anime recs? I love Hayao Miyazaki, and judging by your thumbnail, it looks like you do too.

Re: Hopeful AM Collab Lists
I hate to bring up my other post at the top of this page, but the number of songs voted for by individuals can be different from the final number presented. For example, each person could vote for between 15 and 25 songs, but the final aggregate list can feature 100 (unique) songs.StevieFan13 wrote: 50 works for me too, but to get the most bang for the buck, I guess I'll have to stick with 30.
Re: Hopeful AM Collab Lists
I suggest you "open the floodgates" for Damon Albarn. Instead of just a Blur top, you could make it a top for Blur + Gorillaz + The Good, the Bad & the Queen + solo Albarn + whatever other projects he collaborated to, and turn it into a top 50.
Then again, that's just me - maybe other people would disagree.
Oh, and I'd like a top 50 Nick Cave songs please (covering all projects from Boys Next Door to Grinderman).

Re: Hopeful AM Collab Lists
I was thinking of that. I figured the limit would be half the list (10-15 for a top 30, 10-25 for a top 50, 10-50 for a top 100, etc.). In terms of individual songs, the top spots are going to be the highest rankers, of course (for instance, it looks like "Radio Free Europe" will be declared the #1 R.E.M. song, unless more people put in a good word for "Losing My Religion"), but since I'm the one assembling these lists, either I'll say which of the 1-list receivers make the cut or I'll set them up as a separate vote for which runner-up deserves a spot the most.prosecutorgodot wrote:I hate to bring up my other post at the top of this page, but the number of songs voted for by individuals can be different from the final number presented. Mine's less of a vote and more of a "staff list" kind of deal (like we're a music magazine or something, lol). But everyone should participate in your vote.

Hell, if there's a 500-song list for northern soul, who's to say we can't pick the 500 best funk songs? (sticking at 100 for now, but catch me in a good mood and it might be 250).Moonbeam wrote:Shit, let's make it 500 then.StevieFan13 wrote:You're a man after my own heart.Moonbeam wrote: Top 50/100 funk songs

Re: Hopeful AM Collab Lists (Looking for more list ideas!)
Will the glam songs top also include the glam metal/hair metal of the 1980s, or do we stick to the traditional glam rock era? If the latter, is it worth it to make a separate glam metal top (not sure there would be much contributions from this forum, though)?
Re: Hopeful AM Collab Lists (Looking for more list ideas!)

That could be fun. However, a set of rules is necessary on a number of cases, and the more I think about it, the longer the list gets.Moonbeam wrote:I'd definitely participate in a glam metal poll!Pierre wrote:Will the glam songs top also include the glam metal/hair metal of the 1980s, or do we stick to the traditional glam rock era? - Is Elton John associated with glam rock? My personal opinion is he shouldn't.
- Are Kiss and Alice Cooper considered glam rock or glam metal? If we consider they're both, should we fix a point where they switch genres?
- What about Van Halen, Aerosmith, Whitesnake? Some of their output is sometimes associated with glam metal, but not everything.
- Are Guns N' Roses considered glam metal? I've seen them associated with the scene a few times. My personal opinion is they should be.
- Have Pat Benatar, Scorpions or Cheap Trick ever been associated with glam metal? I don't think so, but maybe it's worth checking?
- What about visual kei? My personal opinion is it should be excluded.
Well, a few headscratchers in there. At least to me. And I may forget some.

It'd probably help to use previous lists as points of reference (I know Stereogum, Diffuser, and I'm pretty sure Ultimate Classic Rock and Loudwire all did glam lists).Pierre wrote:That could be fun.

Also: if Guns N Roses is being counted as glam metal, would Joan Jett and Heart be as well?

I've been wondering that as well, although the name that popped first was Pat Benatar. Lita Ford is often associated with the glam metal scene.StevieFan13 wrote:Also: if Guns N Roses is being counted as glam metal, would Joan Jett and Heart be as well?

Re: Hopeful AM Collab Lists (Looking for more list ideas!)
By my research, these guys are all cosidered glam rock:
- Slade
- T. Rex
- Mott the Hoople
- David Bowie (from about Hunky Dory through Young Americans)
- Alice Cooper
- Roxy Music
- Lou Reed
- Bonnie St. Clair
- The Stooges (or, at least, Raw Power is considered glam rock)
- New York Dolls
- The Sweet
- Mud
- Suzi Quatro
- Sparks
- Iron
- Skyhooks
- Wizzard
- Brett Smiley
- Hector
- Sweeney Todd
- Iron Virgin
And glam metal would be:
- Guns N' Roses
- KISS
- Van Halen
- Motley Crue
- Def Leppard
- Scorpions
- Bon Jovi
And too many others to name. (I saw KISS and Lita Ford on the list linked below, and Alice Cooper was on a glam rock list, so I think the way to separate them is to say KISS is glam metal and Alice Cooper is glam rock. No mention of Heart, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, or Aerosmith, though. And while KISS as a whole may be glam metal, Ace Frehey's "New York Groove" - which I'd include automatically - strikes me as more glam rock.)

mmmm this is very reminiscent of the genre game that BleuPanda wanted to run at some point. I'm all for it, but in a game form rather than a "best of " list.
As for who's included in what genres, the genre list here on AM seemed fitting ?

I dunno. I wanted to do a separate thing from a game (it's easier for me to manage, for one thing), but some of these could be re-worked into games. The R.E.M. list has just been working out really well and I want to do more stuff like it.spiritualized wrote:mmmm this is very reminiscent of the genre game that BleuPanda wanted to run at some point. Gives me material for my blog, too.

Re: Hopeful AM Collab Lists (Looking for more list ideas!)
That's interesting but I'm afraid it's more complicated than that. As for the link, it's from DDD, which is not a professional website (that's why their lists aren't included on AM), so I'm not sure I'd trust them (although the tracks from this particular top 100 do fit the glam metal bill to my eyes).StevieFan13 wrote:By my research, these guys are all cosidered glam rock:

That's only my personal opinion, but I believe time-based criteria and case-by-case analyses are needed for the more contentious cases.
Here are a few lists which cover glam rock:
http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... f=3&t=4196&
http://www.stereogum.com/1903210/34-ess ... -playlist/
http://diffuser.fm/underrated-glam-songs/

And a few which cover glam metal:

http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... f=3&t=4900&
http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... f=3&t=4260&
As you can see, Kiss and Alice Cooper cross over. Aerosmith are mentioned too - I believe the criterion is the music has to be produced by Bruce Fairbairn, who was most famous as a producer for hair metal acts. The Black Crowes are included, but to me that's pushing it.
Also mentioned for glam rock are Elton John, Brian Eno, Electric Light Orchestra and Queen, but I'm a bit unsure about these.
More opinions might be welcome.

Re: Hopeful AM Collab Lists (Looking for more list ideas!)
Maybe we just cross that bridge when we get to it. I might start a poll for which list people want to take care of first (if I could figure out how to start a poll here).

Re: Hopeful AM Collab Lists (Looking for more list ideas!)
You'd need to start another topic to start a poll, but no matter what, you can only have 20 options max. So I suggest you just go in descending orderStevieFan13 wrote:Maybe we just cross that bridge when we get to it. I just saw that. No list from the forum has ever been included on AM. That's not a problem of writing a blurb or whatnot; it's just that we're not critics (although some people here are extremely knowledgeable). To be included, we'd need to start a publication, rate enough albums per month and this would need to become sufficiently important to qualify for AM.StevieFan13 wrote:Note: some of these I might submit to Henrik afterwards (I think most, save for the genre lists, meet qualifications if each of us writes a blurb), but I wouldn't submit them until after the next update (the guy doesn't need any more lists right now).

I see. I'll take that part out and I hear you about the polls.
