Thoughts on My Greatest Songs Project?

Below are the lists I included. I used a formula very similar to the ones often used on AMF.

The number to the left is how much weight I gave the list, based on my perception of its quality and reputability. For the AMF decade polls, I weighed them proportionally to how many songs appeared in the all-time poll from each decade. I gave a small weight to all best-of-the-year lists.

I would be happy to get feedback on how much weight I assigned to the lists, since I’m sure some I could be compelled to change a lot of the numbers. I multiplied the initial points by that “weight” number.

The number on the right is the amount of songs I put in the spreadsheet for each list. I took the entire list for every unordered list, but for some ordered lists, I stopped at a certain point to preserve my sanity. For lists that have been updated, I often tacked the kicked-off songs to the end.

I didn’t include extremely long unordered lists or anything that I felt like wasn’t worth the time. I didn’t include genre-specific lists or lists that seemed too heavily focused on one genre or style. Also in general, when one source released tons of lists that overlapped with each other, I either merged them or chose the best one so as not to sway the data too much. I made an exception for AMF.

But I am sure I excluded some worthy lists, so I would be happy to hear arguments in favor of lists I neglected (or against ones I included).

Would you be able to show a comparison between your list and AM? I'm really curious to see what songs that move up and down between our lists.

I have said many times that this forum has a better taste than most critics. In fact I have found several other ways than AM to get good recommendations for myself. But I still like to think that AM has a purpose and I don't think anyone else is doing the same thing, so that keeps me going.

Yes for sure AM serves a purpose by compiling lists from critics only. And don't sell AM short as it relates to giving recommendations. Perhaps it's more like when you've prolly listened to most of the ranked albums, then for new recommendations you have to often go to other sources, but I think that's just normal.

As we eagerly await the top 500 in the AMF poll, which has been excellent so far, here is an update on my biggest music project.

I included the AM main page top 6,000, 63 individual AMF-user top-100 lists, the results of all the major AMF polls, dozens of critics lists and some others I found by knowledgeable people like you elsewhere on the Internet... In total, I combined 193 lists to get as good a sense as I could for what people - critics, musicians and fans alike - think of as the greatest songs. I'm much happier with this list than I was when I first posted it here last year. I'll update it again with the new AMF songs poll results, but for now, I hope you enjoy this list!

And please let me know if you have any criticisms or find anything surprising about it - in the past that led me to improve it. To the right I included the difference between the rank on my list and Acclaimed Music.
