Songs everyone hates that you like

Postby StevieFan13 » Fri Feb 17, 2017 1:07 am

I was just wondering if any of you guys have any songs that most people dislike, but you personally enjoy anyway, damn the critics. The example that always comes to mind for me is "Shiny Happy People." (The music video, though, is irredeemable.)

Please. People like that song, because of who made it. Don't deny it.

That being said, I actually think Jennifer Lopez's "Play" is a masterpiece. Those guitars and the way her and Christina Milan's vocals intersperse in the chorus. Pop brilliancy. I also like her songs, "If You Had My Love", "I'm Real", "I'm Real (Murder Remix)", "Ain't It Funny (Murder Remix)", and "On the Floor".

The black eyed peas 2009 hits were epically amazing. With the exception of Christgau, critics hated them.

It's popped up on more than a few lists of "bad songs by good artists." I just consider it a great Georgia musicians' summit.
I also think Kiss Me is great (as evidenced by my best songs list), and I Want It That Way needs more critical love.

I'll give you "Meet Me Halfway" and "I Gotta Feeling." I still can't really get into "Boom Boom Pow," no matter what Andrew Unterberger says.

I know Drake isn't totally hated on the forum, but he's probably the one that springs to my mind immediately. I don't like a lot of his songs, but stuff like "Hold On We're Going Home", "Know Yourself" and "One Dance" I do enjoy. "Hotline Bling" I despise, however. I guess Adele would fall into this category as well. 21 is a great album, in my opinion.

The thing about I Gotta Feeling is, some portions of the song sound good but other portions of the song sound stupid. Speaking of the 'And do it...and do it...and do it...' part. Black Eyed Peas occasionally have some fragments of good songs but no complete good songs.

I think Mmmbop is a good song, and speaking of which MmmMmmMmmMmm. I also think Wannabe and one or two other Spice Girls songs are good songs.

C'mon guys, you can do better. Except for"Play" and Lulu, the songs mentioned are not songs that everybody (everybody=almost all critics) hates, they're even ranked or bubbling under in AM.

Mine's the sappy "Truly Madly Deeply" by Savage Garden.

If a song is catchy enough, I don't mind if it's catchy drivel, which apparently "Shiny Happy People" qualifies as. I think anything by ABBA probably qualifies in that category, too.

"The Goonies 'R' Good Enough," which has nothing to do with the Goonies. Bette Midler, "From a Distance."

I'm all the way up to 3 Huey Lewis songs (Heart and Soul, Walking on a Thin Line, The Power of Love). A couple times, there was a song on the radio that I thought was pretty good, not knowing who it was by...then I found out it was by the Bieb (Baby, and As Long As You Love Me).

"I Just Called to Say I Love You," which seems to be considered an abomination in Stevie Wonder's catalog.

"Girl, You Know It's True." I've been meaning to learn the lyrics to "Ice Ice Baby" and leave a rendition of it on my brother's answering machine.

If we're including Rank the Tracks, then "Elegie" by Patti Smith; "Vicar in a Tutu"; the bottom 4 songs for Automatic for the People; Dylan's "4th Time Around," which I used to treat as the highlight of the whole album; U2's "One Tree Hill" and "Mothers of the Disappeared"; the bottom 4 songs for Horses (an 8 song album); "Corpus Christi Carol"; "Third Stone from the Sun."

I was possibly abducted by aliens and made to like one Carly Simon album, Coming Around Again. But then I still have to explain myself on David Bowie's Tonight album; and James Taylor's Never Die Young.

Oooh Dexter you're challenging us? Alright, let's see if I can dig deeper. The thing is, though, we need to find stuff that critics HATE, not just stuff that they think is just OK.
Critics hate Maroon 5, but I think the first half of their career was pretty good, and "Sunday Morning" is seriously in the running to be my favorite song of all time.
Beach Boys "Kokomo" is a nostalgic kick from my childhood (there's a video of the muppets doing it I think).
Luther Vandross "Dance With My Father" still isn't on AM, but I have a hard time seeing critics hate it.
Daughtry, post-grunge band, is probably almost as low as Nickelback in critics' appraisals; I love their first album, Chris's voice is fantastic.
Ooh, I love A.R. Rahman "Jai Ho" from the Slumdog Millionare soundtrack. I got hyped for my calculus tests to that song! XD

You guys are playing it way too safe. There are a lot of absolutely cretinous songs that you've surely heard during a party and that you're ashamed to admit you danced to (or at least, head bopped to). I know quite a few, but they're all French, as we're apparently specialists in producing stupid party songs

In my case, when it comes to feeling guilty for a guilty pleasure, it has to be something that I'm certain everyone else who is sane hates. And here's mine :D

From the English-speaking world, I think the one act that I should be absolutely ashamed of that I manage to enjoy is Alvin and the Chipmunks. A few years ago, I was as appalled by their high-pitched vocals as the next guy, but I accidentally discovered recently that I had developped a tolerance to it. I'm almost certain it has to do with Kanye and the autotune fashion destroying any of my preconceptions or natural reactions to altered vocals. Then again, maybe I'm looking for a scapegoat, but I'm pretty sure this played a role. Thanks Ye.

That said, this tolerance allowed me to get a few laughs; like, for instance, their covers of Cyndi Lauper, the Bee Gees or Dolly Parton are hilariously identical to the originals, while I think their cover of "Uptown Funk" might actually be better than the original.

Well, here's hoping everyone will get out of the woods more  I mean, there can't be anything that you're more ashamed of than that, right? (I'd actually love to be proven wrong)

But wait, fun fact: I just checked while I was typing this and I discovered that Alvin and the Chipmunks technically nearly have one entry on AM, with David Seville's "Witch Doctor" bubbling under. Really hard to find one act which isn't featured on the site in one way or another :character-cookiemonster: And it makes me feel a little less guilty as a consequence. Guess I'll have to dig even deeper.

Well, I guess this thread gives me a chance to brace everyone for my upcoming votes for the 2000s poll, the decade I went completely off the rails. But just for starters, these are songs off the top of my head that I give a 10 (and, I'm afraid, I'm not kidding). Some were from my youth; some I have no excuse:

Physical - Olivia Newton-John
Mr. Roboto - Styx
Rock Me Amadeus - Falco
Girl, You Know It's True - Milli Vanilli (already mentioned)
How You Remind Me - Nickelback (didn't like much else by them, but the vitriol directed at them now doesn't at all affect my feelings for this song).
Climbing the Walls - Backstreet Boys (not many people have heard it, but the BB aren't very well-regarded - and it's my #1 song of 2005, in my mind, an absolutely perfect pop song).

And, as most know, I adore Nightwish, Evanescence, and Within Temptation - each of which has several songs I'd give a 10.

However (and I've been saving this), I might have the Royal Flush here:

Heartbeat - Don Johnson
The song came out when I really, really liked a girl in 9th grade, and it always reminded me of her. I still love it, as nostalgia has completely obliterated any objectivity.

And I don't mean this to sound like a threat, but I might actually add to this list later, since (as I said) these are only the songs right off the top of my head...

In the recent metal-oriented batch of lists that me, StevieFan13 and lagire posted, all three of them appeared in a few lists (with Tuomas Holopainen's solo album even appearing in one). Maybe they're not a completely lost cause ;)

Europe's "The Final Countdown" and Styx's "Come Sail Away" are two songs I loved to listen to as a teenager, and still think are great. I like most of the Scorpions' output too, including "Wind of Change."

In terms of really bad stuff, I have a soft spot for the Afroman song "Because I Got High," which I think has a really catchy chorus.

Chumbawumba's "Tubthumping" and Smashmouth's "All Star" are two songs that everyone pretends to dislike that I think everyone actually loves. I certainly do.

-"Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

Timber by Ke$ha. Pitbull's verse does nothing for me but I think Ke$ha's part is fantastic. The chorus is so catchy.

There are lots of incredibly catchy pop songs I would put in this category.

I generally like Macklemore. My roommate in college would always put on "The Heist" so I've probably heard the album through dozens of times. It's a fun, solid, catchy rap album, and songs like "Can't Hold Us" are legitimately great songs. I absolutely understand the criticisms against him though (he does have a tendency to be real corny), but overall I like his music.

He can be pretty corny, but he can be really clever and stupid in a good way when he really lets loose. I even like "Thrift Shop" - my family has me rap the opening verses all the time. (I just wish he didn't have crap like "Spoons" to make defending him harder).

I guess one super mainstream song that I like (although I haven't heard it in a long time) is Pitbull ft. Marc Anthony - "Rain Over Me". Two cheesy glamorous "musicians", but it works.

No, I really, REALLY hate them. And I thought "Tubthumping" was pretty well liked?

I'll agree with the love shown to J-Lo's "Play" and Milli Vanilli (my favorites are "All or Nothing" and "More Than You'll Ever Know").

I really love some songs by Richard Marx (especially "Satisfied", "Angelia" and "Endless Summer Nights") and Roxette (tons of songs, but especially "Paint", "Silver Blue", and "Listen to Your Heart").

I also adore the Neon Nights album by Dannii Minogue, though I feel that's more unknown than hated.

A lot of these though are the noxiously catchy ones that people loved at first before they were overplayed.

I liked the second Days of the New album that was a total flop and last I checked had 2 AM stars.

Time Magazine called Justin Timberlake's CAN'T STOP THE FEELING the worst song of the year, but I had it in my top 50. And I'm fairly certain that I'm the only music snob in the world who put The Fray's How to Save a Life on a top 50 of the year list.

What you talkin' bout?

If the video could be criticized for being 'cheesy', an equal case could be made for Losing My Religion and it's pretentiousness. Which isn't what I would say, because I love them both. To me SHP, and the video, isn't aimed at adults. The bright colors, the contagious atmosphere of the song all play against each other to create a three minute utopia (or at lease one from 1991) for children - which I love to this day.

My Top Three Songs No One Else Likes

Fitter Happier - Radiohead (#156 AT)

There is a trove of B52s songs, the best of them all has to be Wig. I mean, why would anyone think this was a good idea? WHY ARE THERE JOKES AT THE END OF THE SONG????

Really, Bouncing off the Satellites is a disaster, but I love it. Detour Thru Your Mind, Theme For A Nude Beach and Housework are all jams. Funplex was similarly received, but is actually pretty fabulous. I listen to both regularly.

I think I've always loved Shiny Happy People because when I was a kid they spoofed it on Sesame Street as Furry Happy Monsters.

Two songs I'm somewhat surprised to see mentioned here are Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" and Justin Timberlake's "Can't Stop the Feeling". No matter how overboard the poptimism movement can go sometimes, these are two legitimately good pop songs to me. Bubblegum pop perhaps, but still good.

Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed qualifies as a lot of people hate that I like. Also Speedin' Bullet 2 Heaven by Kid Cudi.

For reasons unbeknown to me and beyond my control, from time to time I find myself searching for Chris de Burgh’s “Lady in Red” on YouTube or Spotify. I’ve not had an experience with a woman dressed in red to get nostalgic about, I usually dislike light, mid-tempo ballads, and it’s certainly not the thought of Chris de Burgh’s haircut that makes me like it. Yet I’m strangely drawn to this song.

And “Kokomo” is one of my favourite Beach Boys songs.

What a world we live in.

I've got one like that (although much more obscure): Éric Serra's "The Experience of Love" off the GoldenEye soundtrack. I have no nostalgic feelings whatsoever toward the film and I myself think this song is junk, yet I like to listen to it every once in a while. Weird.

Out of curiosity, I thought I’d go through the list of songs others have mentioned that I would give a 7 (meaning a song I really like) or higher. I found I actually “really like” most of them. (Note: I did also include those that some argued were acclaimed.)

9
Let It Go – Idina Menzel
True – Spandau Ballet
Sunglasses at Night – Corey Hart

8
If You Had My Love – Jennifer Lopez
The Power of Love – Huey Lewis & the News
Ice Ice Baby – Vanilla Ice
Elegie – Patti Smith
Ebony and Ivory – Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder
Wind of Change – Scorpions
Tubthumping – Chumbawamba
Lady in Red – Chris de Burgh

7
On the Floor – Jennifer Lopez
Kiss Me – Sixpence None the Richer
Meet Me Halfway – Black Eyed Peas
I Gotta Feeling – Black Eyed Peas
Hold On, We’re Going Home – Drake
One Dance – Drake
Eclipse – Pink Floyd
Mmmbop – Hanson
MmmMmmMmmMmm – Crash Test Dummies
Truly Madly Deeply – Savage Garden
Walking on a Thin Line – Huey Lewis & the News
Jai Ho – A.R. Rahman
Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da – The Beatles
Sussudio – Phil Collins
What’s Up – 4 Non-Blondes
The Final Countdown – Europe
Come Sail Away – Styx
Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Thrift Shop – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

For Richard Marx, I give “Right Here Waiting” and “Fools Game” both a 10, and I give “Hazard” a 9. (There are also many others I give an 8 or 7.)

For Roxette, I give “It Must Have Been Love” a 10 and “Spending My Time” a 9. (And there are also many others I give an 8 or 7.)

The lesson here for me was I pretty much like every song ever made. :P

To add to my own list, I also give "My Immortal" and "Blurry" a 10 - not to mention, I really like well over half of this list!

Apparently, I need to ask if there's a site that celebrates despised music - and, if so, can I have dual citizenship?

Most of these are classics within the rock community. I was a member for several years before joining AM. I can attest to liking all these songs, with the ones in bold even making my last all-time list. And I'm actually surprised "Possum Kingdom" is unacclaimed given how I grew up with it.

I in general like Incubus and Live more than the average person. Some others I like:

Shinedown-Most of Us and Them and a bit of Sound of Madness. Though they did sell out a bit after that.
Disturbed-First three albums.
Lifehouse-"Hanging by a Moment"
Matchbox 20-Some of their very earliest material.
Bush-"Everything Zen"
Art of Dying-"Die Trying" and "Get Thru This"
30 Seconds to Mars-This is War (song and album)
Linkin Park-Most of Hybrid Theory
Lit-"My Own Worst Enemy"
" Ah, yes! Our meager restitution"

Call Me Maybe topped the 2012 Pazz & Jop poll and nearly doubled the votes of the runner up; there's no way it belongs in this topic. In fact, probably half the songs that have been mentioned would probably fall somewhere on AM's top 10,000 songs, proving that our taste is simply too good to like bad songs. ☺️

Now if someone mentions "Who Let the Fogs Out" or the "Macerana", I'll take my statement back.

Universal Themes by Sun Kil Moon was Universally Panned by critics, the online music community, and many people on this forum, and is the only album I have ever felt compelled to hide my enjoyment of and even stop listening to it due to its reputation, especially in the light of some of Mark Kozelek's controversial remarks. Truth be told, after re-listening to it and Benji in anticipation of the new Sun Kil Moon album, I consider them to be some of the best folk, and the best music released this decade. *hides from onslaught of rotten fruit and vegetables*

I just straight-up don't know who Sun Kil Moon is, so I don't really know whether to agree or not.

Btw, has anyone mentioned Down Under or Boxerbeat yet?

I mean, I got the ball rolling not with a kitschy novelty or pop song, but with R.E.M., one of the most acclaimed bands ever, so I see what you mean. However, you might take it back when I say I really like Butterfly by Crazy Town (Sugar! Baby!)
