These are some great albums right here. I guess I forgot my bottom 5 couldn't necessarily get the bump into the main bracket (shame, too - I was hoping to see Gogol Bordello and Sky Ferreira show up), but I'm excited to listen to and vote on all of these.

I don't think there's too much drama about Help! being in the race. We've had Magical Mystery Tour and Let It Be. At least that match-up might get more people to vote cos they have to listen only one new album, so there's some "touching surface" to get people involved.
I feel like that

Only other one I'd possibly call controversial would be Dig Me Out - it's a crime that it's not in the top 500. (Also: I totally forgot Billy Joel's The Stranger didn't make the top 500. Shoulda nominated it.)

Is Help! the controversial album you were referring to, Brad? Or is it Weird Al Yankovic?

He told me it wasn't Weird Al. I nominated that one, actually! Interested to see how it fares (my guess: not well, but it's worth a shot).

Gonna be interesting seeing how it does against Yuzo Koshiro. I have hopes for most of my other picks except Ben Folds Five, which I don't feel confident about toppling Nancy and Lee.

Great job, Bang Jan! Lots of albums I've never heard of and plenty I've meant to listen to and haven't yet had the chance to hear (particularly excited about the Arctic Monkeys album).

You are right, of course. While Help! is the album that I feared would stir some dissension, I quickly realized I was wrong to use the word "controversial" and (as you and others have pointed out) well-known/beloved albums by the most acclaimed band in the world have had less than stellar results in these parts previously.

It would appear the only drama is that which I myself stirred up with my poor choice of words. Call it fake news - I'm ready to move on!

Always nice to see a bunch of personal favorite I didn't nominate.

Surprised to see The Game too, I feel Queen's albums are a bit overlooked on AM ; I'm more of a Jazz person myself (that's the only occasion I would utter that sentence) or an Innuendo person (yeah... that's more like me).

Less nice to see what I thought was one of my few 0 star albums, but no, it's their other one and I gave it the way better grade of 1 star !

I agree it should definitely be top 500. That being said, I'm not even sure it will go through its first round, Joanna Newsom has lots of fan around here (and I guess that means I'll have to listen to Have One On Me in full finally).

I guess I see the game as more of an opportunity to make people discover new albums (though I guess at least 2 of my picks are familiar to at least half the people around here), so picking Help! is kind of a missed opportunity but beside that I'm not too worried, it's only our 8th favorite Beatles album after all ;) (I mean it will be a tough contender, but I don't see it winning).

Also if you think Weird Al is an odd or unlikely pick, wait until you hear BABYMETAL. :-D

Lolita Nation. Not as tedious and dull as The Big Shot Chronicles but close enough.
It's really rare I don't find any redeeming quality for albums suggested in AM, but the love of a few AMers for Game Theory remains a total enigma for me. I think the only album I have listened to for a Moderately Acclaimed or decade poll that wouldn't get my vote against the Big Shot Chronicles is Surfing with the Alien.

Sorry for causing controversy haha. I just nominated my favorites that were eligible, and I was shocked that it was. Help!, Yesterday, and Ticket to Ride make up about as strong of a trio as there is in any album. Other Beatles albums are more consistent from top to bottom, but I think the rest of the album still holds together well, especially compared to most albums outside the top 500.

I'd honestly put Help in my top 5 Beatles albums. The individual tracks are some of the best they ever did - the perfect transition from their earlier style to the more psychedelic sound they'd introduce on Rubber Soul.

By the way: is there also a Moderately Acclaimed Songs poll? I know there's the Unacclaimed Songs poll, but are they the same concept? And, if so, when's the next one?

Help will be one of the favorites but not the overwhelming favorite Carrie & Lowell would be. Might have been worried about Smile more than Help. Help might win but won't be anything like NMH's unstoppable march through the first bracket.

I'm a fan of Scott Miller projects though hard to communicate what about them I like. It's just... catchy distorted stream of thought irreverence.

Also worth mentioning that big names in French rock have historically done extremely well in this game.

And I don't think any BMAA201X champion has ever lost before round 4.

I nominated those two! Sky Valley has always been a favorite of mine, and I do agree that The Game (and basically all of Queen's albums) are severely underrated on AM. I find The Game to be a little more consistent than Jazz (although Jazz definitely has the trump card with "Don't Stop Me Now").

Great work!

Some fantastic nominations and 2 The Jam albums :D :D . Some great match ups in the 1st round as well.

I think the Novos Baianos - Acabou chorare will do well and could be a dark horse to win the tournament as it's a cracking album.

I actually nominated Welcome to Sky Valley back in 2010 for the second moderately Acclaimed poll (so the first with nominations, the first had a different selection rule which was more fun but favored well known albums unfairly). Didn't get a warm welcome and lost on first round to a dubstep album... (a pretty great one actually).

I think Sheer Heart Attack is overrated but News of the World, Jazz, the Game and Innuendo deserve some love imo.
Queen is in a strange position, way overrated by rock fans and surprisingly overlooked by critics. I kinda get why for albums, most of them are pretty uneven, but songs wise it's a puzzle. How can Don't Stop Me Now have taken so long to get in AM or the Show Must Go On not be included is very surprising.

''You're gonna lose that girl'' is pure pop perfection in my opinion as well and one of the Beatles' most underrated tracks.

I've always considered "You're Going To Lose That Girl" to be one of the Beatles' most 'coverable' songs, as in it's not so famous that the cover would always live in the shadow of the original, but at the same time it is a great song.

I love Weird Al but usually for non-musical reasons so it's hard for me to rank him against non-comedy albums.

How do you even compare an album you love because the lyrics make you laugh to an album you love because the tune emotionally moves you?

Just realized two of my nominations are against each other in the first round, Penguins Eggs vs Becs. It'll be interesting to see which of those gets voted for. Folk vs minimalist electronica.

I've heard 47 of the albums nominated which is actually a record for me.

To be fair, I was probably wrong to single out 1 Beatles song as 'perfection'. I think every Beatles track is genius (I even love Revolution 9).

Once Upon a Time in the West! One of my favorite albums of all time and the greatest film soundtrack ever! And not nominated by me! If I'll find something better than that in this game it would be a miracle. But we'll see.

The match-up between Dig Me Out and Have One On Me is interesting for me, because I might have nominated both, but assumed they would be in the top 500. Both artists are in my top 10 (perhaps even top 5) and I think my choice will really depend on my mood when we get there.

Help! as the controversial one is interesting. I'm not so happy seeing anything by The Beatles in this game, because nothing about them is really moderately acclaimed. At the same time, Help! is perhaps a better choice than Magical Mystery Tour and Let It Be, as I feel it is the most overlooked of their albums. Perhaps it's just me, but it is the one I tend to forget that exists, despite some obvious good tracks. I think that is due to the fact that it falls between the two main phases in their career: the early, light face and the more artistic second fase that starts with Rubber Soul.

The three mayor deaths in music last year have resulted in an album for each artists. In other words, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Prince have one in (guess which one comes from me). There is also a Cohen tribute album. I expect The Next Day to be a big player.

Finally, besides there being a great number of albums I've never heard of, there is also quite a large amount of albums I've been meaning to listen to for some time, but haven't because of the sheer volume of music that exists. Very exciting. I was sad to have missed this game last year, but hope I can make the time again to completely participate in this game. Because, this is perhaps the best game on Acclaimed Music.

How do you even compare an album you love because the lyrics make you laugh to an album you love because the tune emotionally moves you?
To be sure, I debated a lot which Weird Al album to nominate (In 3-D, Bad Hair Day, and Mandatory Fun are probably his best), but music nerds have a lot to appreciate in Dare to Be Stupid. The title track's a Devo sound spoof, for one thing.

And hey, comparing albums that don't always sound that much alike is not uncommon for this poll.

Crap, Jirin! I checked through these pretty closely to ensure this didn't happen, but must have missed it. Sorry about that!

By the way, speaking of Devo: remind me to nominate Duty Now for the Future next year.

Damn, we discuss more about the albums BEFORE the game than actually during it :)
I personally already rated 53 albums out of 128 (so less than half, which is good !) but, strikingly, 34 of them are >= 8.0 out of 10, which shows the quality of the selection.
Looking forward to some of these matchups :)

Maybe I was considering nominating it and ended up going with something else. Must have been on one of my preliminary drafts then missed the final cut. Sorry about that. :)

I've checked which albums are missing on Spotify. In my region the following are missing:

Bill Callahan – Sometimes I Wish We Where An Eagle
Joanna Newsom – Have One On Me
Raekwon – Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. 2
Sonny Sharrock – Ask the Ages
Gal Costa – Fa-Tal-Gal a Todo Vapor
Peter Gabiel – Passion
Comus – First Utterance
Donachello – Colorseries
Arthur Russell – Another Thought
Fishmans – Long Season (in fact, this band isn’t on Spotify at all)
Various artists – I’m Your Fan
Manuel Göttsching – Inventions for Electric Guitar
Cowboy Mouth – Are You With Me?

I've found all these on YouTube, except the one by Cowboy Mouth.

I also have a couple of questions, just to be sure I have the right album:
808 State’s 90 is the same as Utd State 90?
Oscar Brown Jr.’s Sin & Soul is the same as Sin & Soul… And Then Some (sounds like a sequel)
Yuzo Koshiro’s Bare Knuckle is the same as Streets of Rage?

I'm so thankful that Prince's music ended up being on Spotify. I didn't know that it was going to be when I nominated Parade. Thank heavens.

I also have a feeling a couple of people know which other four I nominated...

It's on Spotify under the word Ninety, not the digits.

Tracks 1-12 on said album is the album in question.
Rob wrote:Gal Costa – Fa-Tal-Gal a Todo Vapor
This album is on Spotify under the title Brazil A Tudo Vapor, however the tracks order is different.

Looking at the brackets, I'd be surprised if the Beatles passed round 2 (I have bet on Loud City Song to win the competition so...), even more round 3 (facing either Dig Me Out or Have On Me).

I'm more worried about Ennio Morricone and Lana del Rey running over the early competition to be honest.

Interesting Once Upon A Time is one of my favorite movies but the soundtrack never stood out to me. Do you prefer it over The Good, The Bad and The Ugly?

As soundtracks go, I do quite like 'Once Upon a Time in the West' (more-so than 'The Good, The Bad. and The Ugly'), but generally I don't enjoy listening to soundtrack albums, and 'Sin & Soul' is a tough first round opponent. So, I think Nassim's concern about Ennio Morricone getting a flying start could be misplaced. Then again, I am hopeless at predicting forum voting preferences.

OK I will have to listen to OUATITW's soundtrack in it's entirety at some point. I do enjoy soundtracks so I'll see how it measures up to TGTBTU,
