Music of the Year 1992: Round 1, Week 4 *REVISED*

Post by ordinaryperson »

Hello,
Since BleuPanda decided to pass on the "year" project, I have taken it over. I will follow the same rules and use the same bracket that has already been created. Simply, just vote for which album or song you like the most in each match up. The deadline for voting is Saturday, 18 February at 7:00 PM EST.
There has been a little confusion over albums that are competing this week, I have decided to replace my number one album (Noir Desire) with the other album (The Pharcyde). If you have already posted in the other thread you don't need to post in this thread unless you have changed one of your picks.

Albums:
Ministry - Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed & the Way to Suck Eggs vs. Nick Cave - Henry's Dream
The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde vs. The Young Gods - T.V. Sky

The Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall vs. Morrissey - Your Arsenal

Songs
Radiohead - Creep vs. Beastie Boys - So What'cha Want
Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness vs. Ice Cube - It Was a Good Day
R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts vs. R.E.M. - Drive

House of Pain - Jump Around vs. Stereo MC's - Connected
Dr. Dre - Nuthin' But a G Thang vs. En Vogue - My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)
Arrested Development - Tennessee vs. R.E.M. - Man on the Moon

I'm changing my vote to Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde from my previous pick for that slot. The rest stands.

Well damn I voted in the original poll and didn't see this. And of course I've heard of and have listened to Bizarre Ride. I was hoping what I said in the original poll would have stayed because that was the first time I had never heard of any of those albums. Oh well. Here goes again:

Albums:
Nick Cave - Henry's Dream
The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde
Cesaria Evora - Miss Perfumado
Morrissey - Your Arsenal

Songs
Beastie Boys - So What'cha Want
Ice Cube - It Was a Good Day
R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts
Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck
The Cure - Friday I'm in Love
House of Pain - Jump Around
Dr. Dre - Nuthin' But a G Thang
Arrested Development - Tennessee

Albums
Ministry - Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed & the Way to Suck Eggs (4.5) vs. Nick Cave - Henry's Dream (4.0)
Ministry's masterpiece - such a perfect soundtrack for the political mess that 1992 was, it felt angry like the youth of the time. Henry's Dream is good but weaker than what Nick Cave usually delivers

The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde (5.0) vs. The Young Gods - T.V. Sky (5.0)
What a shame - two perfect albums in my view, facing each other. The Young Gods were much more likely to win against Noir Désir, but in truth, I was the guilty party who changed to TYG from...The Pharcyde originally. So Karma bites me again :/
Real shame, coz another "industrial rock" album deserved to go through - and the Swiss know how to create this menacing atmosphere. The Pharcyde is a great album too and it will deserve to go through.

Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun (5.0) vs.Cesaria Evora - Miss Perfumado (3.0)
No contest here - big fan of QOTSA, can't ignore their roots.

The Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall (3.0) vs. Morrissey - Your Arsenal (4.5)
I always felt Morrissey never got the credit he deserved. He is a miserable git and has dodgy political views but his songwriting has, for most of his career, been top notch. Your Arsenal is amongst the three most essential Moz releases. The country pop-rock of the Jayhawks never really appealed.

Songs :

Radiohead - Creep (4.0)vs. Beastie Boys - So What'cha Want (4.5)

Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness (2.5) vs. Ice Cube - It Was a Good Day (3.5)
The Manics are capable of so much better than Motorcycle Emptiness.

R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts (4.0) vs. R.E.M. - Drive (4.5)
I think I may have heard Everybody Hurts a bit too much

Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (3.0) vs. Suede - The Drowners (4.0)
Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name (5.0) vs. The Cure - Friday I'm in Love (4.0)
House of Pain - Jump Around (5.0) vs. Stereo MC's - Connected (4.0)
Dr. Dre - Nuthin' But a G Thang (4.0) vs. En Vogue - My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It) (3.5)
Arrested Development - Tennessee (4.0) vs. R.E.M. - Man on the Moon

'92 was a great year for rap. That, '88, and '94 are probably three of the best-ever years for rap.

This is very true sure. I can't argue with this at all. 89, 91, 93 and 96 would be honorable mentions for me.

Ministry - Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed & the Way to Suck Eggs vs. Nick Cave - Henry's Dream
Nick Cave's albums are hit and miss, that one is on the good half and I really enjoyed it. Tough call, but I'd rather listen to Ministry given the choice.
The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde vs. The Young Gods - T.V. Sky
Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun vs. Cesaria Evora - Miss Perfumado

Songs
Radiohead - Creep vs. Beastie Boys - So What'cha Want pass, 2 great songs from 2 of my favorite bands of all time
Ice Cube - It Was a Good Day
R.E.M. - Drive
Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck (best song of the week and of the competition)
Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name
House of Pain - Jump Around
En Vogue - My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)
Arrested Development - Tennessee
Mr Wendal is not in AM6000 ???!!!

It's really odd from a French perspective to see that the Cure are mostly known by the larger audience in the US for Friday I'm in Love. In France you hear a lot of Cure on the classic rock radio, but songs will be Close to Me, Boys Don't Cry, In Between Days or Just Like Heaven (Lullaby was a big hit but not sure you still hear it as much, and I'm pretty sure I've heard The Love Cats a couple times), but never heard Friday I'm In Love. Between 85 and 92, the band had 7 top songs charting in or top 50 (including a rerelease of Boys Don't Cry) but Friday I'm in Love never did (while High from the same album made it to the top 10). Heck, Wish is even the only one of their 8 latest albums not to chart in the French top 10. And if you ask me, for once, we are the ones who are right, Friday I'm In Love is a middle of the road remake of better songs they have released in the 80s.
I must say I am always a bit disappointed Killing in the Name is the best known Rage Against the Machine song when I wouldn't put it in their top 10, but I'd still pick it over Friday I'm in Love any day.

Nassim, I would actually say "Lovesong" is also a well-known Cure song in the U.S. I've heard it many times on the classic rock radio.

About what I expected. I like Friday I'm in Love better than Killing in the Name, but the rest I'm satisfied with.
