AMF EOY Best Albums of 2016 -- RESULTS

Post by notbrianeno »

We continue our roundup of 2016 with the 100 favorite albums of 2016, including the final AMF EOY poll appearance of two beloved music legends: David Bowie and Leonard Cohen. Thanks to all who participated in this poll, I hope you had as much fun making your lists as I did reading them.

Same format as before, only every Top 100 album gets an image.

Rank. Artist | Title
(Total points | Total votes)
--For Top 50 in Spreadsheet--

Critics' list: Placement in Critics' EOY
Biggest Fans: Any Top 10 votes or the next highest vote outside that.

And as a special bonus from the host, I will list any songs from the Top 100 songs where applicable.

As a special honorable mention: the only album with a #1 vote that did not make our top 100.

This was just a little gimmick I added last year. You don't have to sift back and do this again.

However, if you do, remember "Blackstar" the song was #9 last year. So include that please.

So far, three albums from my top 50 have showed up. Glad one of them was Triángulo de Amor Bizarro, I feared the forum was indifferent to it (although with only 3 votes, that's not a smash succes either, but these were undoubtedly high votes).

Litterally loads of albums I haven't listened to otherwise.

Thanks for your work notbrianeno, this looks neat. And thanks for the songs countdown too, although I didn't vote for songs, it was undoubtedly interesting.

Bottomless Pit is exactly what you’ve ordered from a Death Grips record, except a full force lethal intravenous dose of it: untamed aggressive noise, raw turbulent chaos, unsociable disorderly violence, but more fixated in this performance, sharpened into a crude prison weapon designed to murder you whilst they strangle themselves just for kicks.--WarmGunHappy, RateYourMusic

Not to Disappear fits perfectly within the dark days and the feelings of fear and loneliness that sometimes dominates us. With the considered textual depth of Elena Tonra and different musical currents the album knows how to move around the emotion and pain.--HugovdBos, RateYourMusic

This album is uncool. It's not even uncool in a cool way, like how Art Angels adapted the pop music of the early 2000s into a fresh, catchy way. It's just plain, schlocky uncool, all of the flotsam and jetsam of the 80s in one gaudy package.

And here's where I reveal myself to be a poser with no taste, because this is so much fun. Whenever the rational music-nerd side of me wants to wrinkle my nose at the power balladry and cheesy flourishes, the fun-loving rainbow-clad pixie version of me is bouncing up and down, chanting along to "Laser Gun" and doing a horrible air guitar version of "Go!".--Cosmiagramma, RateYourMusic

Fantastically sung and written album with plenty of strong hooks, excellent percussion and hypnotic bass playing. Splicing art rock into her repertoire helps this album feel approachable and broadens it's appeal whereas the Jazz influence keeps you coming back for more with its unorthodox time signatures, jagged guitar stabs and bombastic rhythms.--TheLordofDuckness, RateYourMusic

Like the best, most colorful rappers in the States, Konnichiwa confidently struts and showcases the emcee’s vibrant, exciting personality traits perhaps more than pretty much anyone else in Britain, grime or otherwise. Skepta’s music inhabits the good, evil, and the delightful grey areas in between; he can be at once playful (“I don’t know why man’s callin’ me family all of a sudden/ Like hmm, my mum don’t know your mum/ Stop telling man you’re my cousin”), overtly brash (“I bet I make you respect me/ When you see the mandem are selling out Wembley/ Roll deep in a blacked out Bentley/ Pull up outside like ‘wagwan sexy’”), and even emotionally resonant (“Ex girl said that I’m never at home/ So she found a replacement/ Said, ‘You was on the road but I never seen you when I was out on the pavement’”). There’s no question about it, Skepta has enough personality to more than fill Konnichiwa all by himself, and lord knows he needs all the room he can get. I wouldn’t recommend crowding him--Bklynrussell, RateYourMusic.

The songs with more explicitly political lyrics are totally of the zeitgeist, pinning down the spirit of the times while simultaneously trying to circumvent it. the songs just generally all accomplish what you feel they set out to do, whether it's putting sexy or romantic imagery in your head, making you want to dance, making you genuinely think about how your daily interactions with other people are innately political, or making you want to just make an effort to be a kinder person in your life.--Cal50, RateYourMusic

The band is a septet and none of it goes to waste: every instrument and player gets a chance to shine and a memorable hook, even the rare inclusions of harmonica in all it's Sabbathian glory are on point. The album is built like a straight up 40 minute loop and it’s really hard to resist listening to it as such: the songs are distinct but flow into each other seamlessly, the band maintains a common aesthetic, but explores different aspects of it (there’s this out of the blue afro-cuban groove in the second part of “Invisible Face” that comfortably occupies the same space with “Road Train”’s mock-metal that comes 2 minutes later) and I always find myself wanting more whenever it “ends”.--Blue_suburban_skies, RateYourMusic

You know...off topic, but in election time in the US, I always get weary of older folks representing the entirety of our nation. But hearing the clarity and fully realized message that Iggy Pop delivers on this LP comfort me in an odd way. This is an extremely rich, effortful release by Gambino and honestly it's completely different to anything he's done before and likewise anything that has been released in the past few years.
Moreso than the genre, what I think sets it apart the most from any other album this year is that it's not an album for the fans per say, but for Donald Glover himself and his son.--Pablomajesko, RateYourMusic

The Glowing Man is the phase of transition. An ecstatic journey, full of spiritual energy, which is linked to the structure of the two previous albums (2 hours of music, characterized by complex multilayered and ultra-dilated songs), but which stands out for atmosphere. Less earthly and carnal than its predecessors - of which elaborates some ideas with new sensibility -, The Glowing Man is ethereal and cosmic as Godspeed You!Black Emperor post rock, but with a hallucinatory visionary approach that only a shaman as Gira owns.--Anesthetized, RateYourMusic

So many musical ideas are thrown around that Varmints could have easily been a clusterfuck: a roided-up Imperial March leads into a sitcom-opening pop tune, which leads into an elegant slow build, which leads into a glimmering synth-pop song. Where Viet Cong was raw and loud, Preoccupations is thick and textured. The production on many of these tracks utilise drones and heavy reverb to create walls of sound that envelop rather than assault. And there is a greater prominence afforded to the synthesizers, whose glistening tones often provide a counterpoint to the sombre mood created by the rest of the music. This blend of bright and bleak throws a touch of New Wave/Darkwave into the mix, and reveals the band’s love for groups like The Cure and New Order in a way that wasn’t evident before.--Stoo99, RateYourMusic

This is not the sound of a world devastated by right wing governments, ultra-capitalist economists, and anarchist or pseudo-anarchist demonstrators rebelling without a clue about how to do it. Instead, Foreverland is free of all post-1992 extra-musical stress factors; it is the same old beautiful postmodernity that has merged into modernity or vice versa. Very good last batch. Interesting to see that the AM rankings for James Blake and Parquet Courts are so close to the critics' own ranking. And, of course, I'm happy to see La Femme place so high in comparison to the critics' list.

Then again, we're probably entering the consensual highly acclaimed albums zone, so I predict all the albums from now on will be solid (well, except... oh, whatever), which is all the more great to see La Femme among them.

Also interesting to see that due to the difference in mechanics, the albums from the moderately acclaimed poll are ranked very differently in here. Foreverland due to its very polarizing reception only ended up 10th on the moderately acclaimed poll, but here pretty much ties with the winner, Mystère (which I assume is still 1st of the bunch).
On the other hand Gogo Penguin, due to a strong consensus, ended 2nd in the poll, only to end up in here 35 places behind Foreverland and only 8th of the crop overall.

notbrianeno, could we have the genre(s) highlighted/bolded in the review (if it is mentioned in the review)? It really helps me to decide whether I want to hear it. It's a personal gripe, so don't feel pressured to do it if it's too difficult.

ANTI is the first album in Rihanna's catalog that fully displays what producers and executives have seen in her behind closed doors for years now. To be more clear - ANTI was among the very best albums of 2016, all the spectacle and fake news of Lemonade be damned; to paraphrase Christgau, for all the words I just spent praising ANTI for reveling in Rihanna as a character, it's true measure of quality is that the songs are just good, all of them.--Nodima, RateYourMusic

Sirens is a bittersweet pill of youthful melancholy and a protest towards an elderly generation running the world into ruin. Nicolas Jaar has made us wait five long years for a follow-up to the excellent and otherworldly Space Is Only Noise. As a member of the age group indirectly referenced in the context of this LP, I can only say that the wait was worth it. When the man himself noted that this would be his most politically-charged work yet, he was not just biting at heels of clickbait - this a modern protest record.--Kaptajn_Klyde, RateYourMusic

Freetown Sound is the point at which the remarkable vision of Blood Orange has solidified into something wholly original and profoundly important. It synthesises Dev Hynes' many influences - pop, funk, hip-hop, jazz - into a remarkable whole without ever really sounding like any other artist, and creates a fragmented narrative just as far-reaching.--Acidballroom, RateYourMusic

The music of Montreal’s Kaytranada evokes a big night out on the turps, when one minute you’re in a state of pure bliss, and the next you’re vomiting up Jägerbombs in some piss-soaked alleyway. 99.9%, the Hatian-Canadian’s debut album, is an altered state unto itself, a heady brew of nocturnal beats and cosmopolitan appeal--Bobdigijr, RateYourMusic

I haven't been as enthralled with this year as a lot of people have, though in at least two other cases I was rather nervous about how well an artist I'd consider myself a big fan of (The Life of Pablo and De La Soul's ...and the Anonymous Nobody) would pull off a grand idea that seemed a bit outsized even for them. (I look forward to telling my children that the greatest entertainer of my youth/young adulthood premiered an album as part of a fashion show.) But when things have hit hard, they have: albums like American Band represent the kind of protest albums we can learn from and fight with and the thoughtful albums we can sink into when we need a reminder of what life can look like when we work together for the greater good.--GoUT120, RateYourMusic

There is a delirious streak of madness in the production, eschewing subtlety and going full throttle theatric at times which is thrilling and effective. Elevating her work even more is her voice. Her default is sorrow but she can let her vocals soar into high heavens. In other words, she can sound like she's singing from the bottom of a well in one song and then seem like the lead in a choir of angels in another. There are many lush and declarative moments in this album and they make this one of the more distinctive and more ambitious albums of the year.--Blair23, RateYourMusic

This is an album that's about so many things - grief, depression, existential crises, connection, gentrification - but the framing of it is about a single moment where seven people who are only connected by the fact that they live in the same block of a London neighbourhood come together to witness something. It's about coincidence, happenstance, minor decisions that lead to huge moments and it lasts exactly as long as it takes me to walk from work to home. The sheer weight of that coincidence completely broke me that day, more than Tempest's impassioned final plea to 'love more', more than the perfect picture of grief and survivor's guilt that "We Die" painted, more than "Pictures on a Screen," a song I identify with to a scary degree. I had to come to terms with the whole experience before I could move on and go inside. It was 7:58 am...who else was just getting home from work now? What decisions led to them being where they are?--Troutmask, RateYourMusic

Presented as a throwaway project that would perhaps be receiving a favor to be referred to as such, untitled. unmastered. has revealed itself over the past several months to be Kendrick Lamar's most confident statement yet. Here he is removed from the narrative constraints that made him such a critic's darling but also shielded some of his higher concept tracks from more direct criticism; Lamar has long proven himself a keen student of sequencing and tension or lack thereof. Again this is apparent on this EP, one that wades from highs to lows with the snap of a finger, adherent to nothing more than the moment's needs.--Nodima, RateYourMusic

Louise Gray, in her review of Hope Six for the Wire, remarks, “One of the chief sources of the album’s power is the value it assigns to the act of witnessing, of seeing and taking account of the most vulnerable.” Today, the mass-mediated public sphere makes it easier than ever to simply witness the atrocities inflicted on people across the globe. PJ Harvey identifies passive observation as a central component in the mechanisms of power which assail the misfortunate of the world. Those who stood and watched her record her album at Somerset House were thereby participants in a work of performance art. Harvey would suggest that passivity wreaks nothing but death and destruction. But, in this particular case, the result is something like a clarion call.--Bobdigijr, RateYourMusic

Surprised at the low finish of Untitled Unmastered. I can't listen to track 3 enough. That and PJ Harvey's "The Wheel" are in my top five tracks of the year.

Need to listen to American Band again. I'm a huge DBT fan but guess I just haven't gotten this one.

So like the best rap albums, it's possible to listen to this album on a surface level without going to far into the lyrics, since they flow so well over the beats. But if you do listen to the lyrics, you'll find a lot of hilarious jokes and serious statements about life. In essence, you'll laugh, you'll cry, etc. Somehow, this group has managed to both meet and surpass my expectations.--Warioman86, RateYourMusic

Wildflower isn't heavy at all, of course, but it's as emotionally resonant and as powerful as any work of art. This album sounds like a summer's day, a soundtrack to a beach party, a light breeze, so it's tempting to say that that's all it is, accept it as "entertainment" and nothing more. That's a mistake; ebullient joy and wonder is as worthy an emotion to express as righteous anger or dark depression or painful heartbreak, and if expressed correctly it can be just as devastating.---Cosmiagramma, RateYourMusic

All told, this album's just lovely. It feels and sounds incredible, with influences ripped across the map, brought together in what feels like an entirely new project and not done to manipulate people's nostalgia. There's genuine heart and feeling running rampant and it's good to just sit back and feel it. Feel heartbroken, feel oppressed, or feel melancholic that life isn't perfect. It's okay. this album deals with: race, fighting off unwanted feelings of being a generally inferior person, aging, desperately wanting to die, desperately not wanting to die, feeling inextricably bound & attracted to those who society generally looks at as being less important, the wreckage of unchecked male ego, deconstructions of white western culture, feeling like your fans will only love you if you're miserable, and cum. cum is always a bonus.--Cal50, RateYourMusic

Emotionally charged in its method but indescribably political, ANOHNI takes us on a love story through an apocalypse that feels both intimate and inevitable. Playing several roles from the victim to the oppressor, a sense of guilt and loss permeates every song as she understands that the consequence is just as much her fault as it is everybody else's. Some may find the lyrics overtly obvious and bombastic, but I found the unabashed approach more humbling than shoving cryptic metaphors down our ears. Subtlety be damned. The album displays a morphing relationship between the artist and America, her lover, and the audience in an environment on the verge of collapse. I rarely listen to insecurity, loneliness, and destruction with this much vitriol and bitterness. --Pulpfuertes, RateYourMusic

A few months prior his death Cohen said "I am ready to die" and that state of mind surrounds this album. He doesn't sound angry. He doesn't sound sad. He sounds content. Peaceful. At one with a life that is coming to a close. He's happy. This is not the sound of a man desperate trying to cling on to life but one who has made peace with the inevitable.

It’s the sound of a crisis, a meltdown, so vulnerable yet too afraid to let anyone know. Confused, tweaking out, but too pretentious and embarrassed to outright say it. And so it hides. It hides beneath flawed noises, clipping and distorting like it’s from some perfectionist producer’s worst nightmare, fragments of ideas breaking apart as if the sad peacefulness of the previous album has been digitised by a buggy system. To synthesise the sorrow. To shy its injured soul beneath the wreckage so that no one can truly look at it for what it is. And by doing so, Bon Iver has once again created something truly magical. A record unlike anything in existence, a fractured glitchiness of disordered beauty that has a powerful impact so different from every other record I’ve ever heard, that I’m equally spellbound by its affectionate strangeness as I am concerned about Vernon’s mental health. Please talk to someone, friend. I want more albums from you.--WarmGunHappy, RateYourMusic

Keeping track of my favorites, continued: I am quite satisfied.
1-5:
Day Breaks (#63)
Bottomless Pit (#50)
untitled. unmastered (#23)

6-10:
Bonito Generation (#80)

11-15:
Santana IV (#91)
Telefone (#70)
Awaken, My Love! (#39)

On to predictions and comments!
RTJ3 should have counted for 2017! It would have made top 10 easily, I think.
Unfortunately Steviefan13, I think Green Day did not make the top 100. I'm fine with that; it wasn't great.
Let's see if I can do this off the top of my head: From my top 10, Blackstar will be 1, A Moon Shaped Pool will be 2, Lemonade 4, Thank You for your Service... 6, Atrocity Exhibition 9 in there somewhere. Oh wait, ScHoolboy is not going to make it... :(
Frank Ocean 5, Solange 8, Car Seat Headrest 7, Angel Olsen 10, and Nick Cave 3 (almost missed this one).

I can see this album quickly becoming canonized and being seen as essential listening on the weirder side of hip-hop within a year or so. Not just the glowing reception its received so far tells me that, either. It's just that no album this unique and creative and off the wall is simply going to become a forgotten relic for genre enthusiasts to pick up years later. Atrocity Exhibition will be right there, shining at the surface for years to come, ready to be laid upon the ears of another unsuspecting victim. It will have a legacy. Part of the reason this feels so important is because I know people like the mermaid of Nikes; they're getting married next year, the proposal was recorded by five phones. They were on a stage, feels like a play. I think Frank captures that feeling perfectly, witnessing that type of thing makes you cynical. Frank finds a way to portray the complexities of this modern romantic environment in a way that doesn't reduce everything to unfaithfulness and promiscuity. People are stuck, for many different reasons. Nice balance of hard-hitting introspection and charismatic extraversion, the emotions ebb-and-flow, he's not one person.--Creepunch, RateYourMusic

A Seat at the Table is very much the yin to Lemonade's yang, the ice to its fire, meditative where the other was aggressive. But what connects the two to each other is how they are both unbelievably raw and honest accounts of the frustrations and indignities of being a black woman in America. A Seat at the Table may seem gossamer and dreamy on the surface, but Solange's rage is immediately palpable.--Ijustknow87, RateYourMusic

There are some songs from 21CB that I really like. 21 Guns is fundamentally a good song, but the overplay kind of made me tire of it (not as much as Boulevard of Broken Dreams, though).

In my opinion, every individual song on 21CB is pretty good (though I can see how some of them are too sugary for music snobs), but the concept was very messy.

In general, I think American Idiot and 21CB get a bad rap, but I like them both a lot.

Lemonade, with every moving piece in her cognitive wheel, seeks to find the positive side in adverse conditions, both for the black community and women in general. For when a guy cheats, even in such extreme cases as the Bey and Jay marriage, you can unleash all your fury you want but what's done is done. She looks to the future while proving, through sheer confidence, that she can get by without him. And when society constantly puts down people of color, forcing some black youths to rethink their skin color in terms of societies image of it, Beyonce is here to accept her blackness in all its glory. Lemonade harbors both of these proclamations through a cinematic concept unknown to popular music in today's age. If one artist could accomplish that it's R&B's best, and smartest, shape-shifter.--Dozensofdonuts, RateYourMusic

Because this is how you leave the game. You leave the game attuned precisely to your moment, respectful of the history you helped to forge and demonstrative of the future you'd rather the next ones come to see. You construct something enormous, wild, utterly self-confident, inviting, scary, brutal, connective and above all tight. This shit is one hour but it only takes twenty-five brain minutes to hear. It just keeps coming. Every track is at least very good and many are great. But it's even better because of the flow of the tracks, the astonishing management of the narrative. Also it feels for me, for anyone with any sort of curiosity about modern music. It feels like my duty to hear and love this. Sure, it's firstmost a rallying-cry to Black America to start something (while also celebrating the life and work of a fallen brother), but I'm down with its secondary function as scripture of sound past, present and to come. I don't know. Maybe the ones who were there for rap, who had rap for them in the 80s, 90s and 00s can say with authority that this stands alongside the music they grew up with. For me, well I'm new to rap I guess, and this is where it all begins. I can't wait to find out more.--acoleuthic, RateYourMusic

Near the end of “I Need You,” Cave chokes out a single line – “Just breathe.” It’s a painful moment, one that shows Cave at his most vulnerable and open, his most ragged. It’s hard to tell if he’s begging his son to wake up or trying to regain his composure. That may not be the most important part, however: either way, this shows Cave staring death in the face and cracking. This is a record of a man at his lowest point, one full of fear and doubt and numbness. But it’s, notably, an honest one: it would be simple to tell a story of suffering that ended in victory, but this one instead resides in blacks and muted grays throughout, shying away from a fully satisfying conclusion. Skeleton Tree’s overarching message may be its simplest: Grief never quite leaves; instead, you simply learn to live with it.--SneakyPiglet, RateYourMusic

What's absolutely undeniable for me, though, is that tonal shift, and the way Yorke feels more vulnerable and more bruised here than he ever has. It's very rare that you'd ever describe him as having fire, but there's still a very real sense here that something has been extinguished. It's heartbreaking, and honestly, that's something I never expected to hear from Radiohead in the 21st century. Nor are many things about this album. It's absolutely blown me apart.

This is the only Radiohead album - and only one of a very, very small handful of albums by anybody - that I could imagine one day believing to be better than OK Computer. An absolutely incredible achievement.--Iai, RateYourMusic

almost unavoidably the best album of 2016.

the darkness and disease of the situation seeps through every crevice of the record, the freeform jazz walloping and gnarled sound manipulation create such a cool and well-realized aural tapestry. you can feel the bipolar shifts as bowie slips from sort of broken wails to screaming like in girl loves me, its a wildly uncomfortable and thorough presentation and id compare its brevity and scale to station to station and yet id say its thrust into thematically fitting and diverse music even surpasses that record (which I have my issues with but love).

everything still captures that sort of grace that bowie naturally gathered tho, from the schitzophrenic whirlwind of tis a pity to the pummelling SWANS esque rock of sue. its haunting but ends so sweetly, dollar days is a nice final Typical Bowie song that feels so earned, the line about never seeing his home of england again probably the most crushing on the record for me, and the finale is heart ripping but none too maudlin. I like that bowie's musical embodiment of a goodbye is this anxious fleeting electro pop shuffle, its very angelic and manages to wring pure humanity from the appropriate tone of the artifice instead of ending with a typical BANG or an understated whisper he just cleverly digs between these two. always keeping people guessing. its also profound how direct his lyrics are in this closer, and even still keeping the specifics of who he really was to himself. the title I CANT GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY can and probably is alot of things but I like the notion that even in these tragic moments he wanted to keep the magic securely attached to the artistry and continue to leave people wondering, letting those who love him know he was "saying no but meaning yes", but not letting us see any deeper at what that could entail.

he opted to only share what felt comfortable for him at the time, which makes this record all the more potent and meaningful and BRAVE in its very existence. ive read bowie suffered six heart attacks when he was making blackstar. he was an unflinchingly dedicated, curious and giving person. in his final days he toiled away making music for the people who loved him and suffered for it, and in response only pushed and refused to give out until his job was done.

he was a dedicated artist to the very end and a man who clearly, TRULY adored music and was always curious and inspired by what was around him. ★ is not only brilliant but its proof that bowie even in his final days he had his finger on the pulse of intriguing modernity and would not let that desire wither. I respect alot about the man but more than most things I respect that he was through and through a true lover of music and expressed it even when people were left baffled or even when he was maybe isolating the fanbase in the search for what he loved. I know he cared about the fans and that he hoped they'd come with him, but what's great is ultimately the right people did, and those people got to witness a proud supernova.

rest in peace ★--Chaos94, RateYourMusic

Wow! It's a strong group of albums at the top, but I'm still surprised Lemonade only came in 5th here, let alone for the critics. Bowie and Radiohead are in my all-time top 10 while Beyonce is a little outside my top 50. So Blackstar and A Moon Shaped Pool more or less met my expectations, while Lemonade was much better than I anticipated. In any case, thanks for your work, notbrianeno. Very interesting results, and I'm happy that Bowie was able to end his career on a note like this. Nice for Radiohead to maintain success at this stage of their career as well.

The Artists of the Decade (so far) - artists that have more than 1 album in AMF EOY Top 10 in 2010s:

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (2010); Reflektor (2013)
Beach House - Teen Dream (2010); Bloom (2012)
Frank Ocean - Channel Orange (2012); Blonde (2016)
Grimes - Visions (2012); Art Angels (2015)
Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me (2010); Divers (2015)
Julia Holter - Loud City Song (2013); Have You in My Wilderness (2015)
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010); Yeezus (2013)
Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d. city (2012); To Pimp a Butterfly (2015)
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Push the Sky Away (2013); Skeleton Tree (2016)
Radiohead - The King of Limbs (2011); A Moon Shaped Pool (2016)
St. Vincent - Strange Mercy (2011); St. Vincent (2014)
Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz (2010); Carrie and Lowell (2015)
Swans - The Seer (2012); To Be Kind (2014)
Tame Impala - Lonerism (2012); Currents (2015)
The National - High Violet (2010); Trouble Will Find Me (2013)

That's 15 artists tied at 2 albums each.

Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar and Swans all had new albums this year but failed to convert.

The most surprising of all is Kanye's miss (as a personal opinion I salute that) as he was present in the critics final Top
10 and he seemed like a forum darling all along.

Once again, the diversity of styles in this list of artists is amazing. Musical auteurship at its best.

Last but not least, thank you notbrianeno for your work on the polls and well done everyone who voted !

Aside of course from Radiohead and Kanye, since my personal opinion is that they have no business so high (and M83, but whatever), I'm quite satisfied with the final results. I'd swap Solange and Beyoncé (funny fact they finished so close) and A Tribe Called Quest and Danny Brown (I believe that Atrocity Exhibition is by far the hip-hop masterpiece of the year and I expect it to rise in critical appreciation over the years) but overall the top is difficult to argue with (well, aside from the whole "where are the rest-of-the-world albums?" thing but there's already La Femme in the top 50, so I shouldn't complain too much). The biggest surprise is Rihanna at #30, I felt that the forum's appreciation of her was more tepid than that of the critics, but in the end ANTI is relatively close to the critics' ranking.

Thanks for the wonderful work, notbrianeno.

This is certainly a diverse array of musical styles and genres, but I think metal still remains outside of the AMF taste. I am just as guilty, though. Anyways, thank you again NotBrianEno for your fantastic work!

Metal still remains outside of the large-majority-of-critics taste unfortunately. An that of course reverberates on AMF's taste.
