A couple other statistical notes as I start to pull all this together:

25 nominators (24 last year) - most ever
221 different albums were nominated (225 last year)
2 were nominated twice (6)
30 are from the Bubbling Under group (27) - most ever
82 are completely Unacclaimed (66) - most ever

These are pleasing statistics to me.

I would be even more pleased if we have at least 25 voters each week when the tournament begins!

edited - 82 unacclaimed!

By that comment sounds like an already very popular album.

I just nominated my favorite albums that are eligible. I wouldn't assume anything is a favorite unless it's already done very well in other forum games.

If it's something you're worried is very popular, m b v maybe?

Yeah I certainly don't try to nominate albums that I think will win, but I always get excited when an album I nominate makes it far (such as The Cry of Love a few years ago).

Hail To The Thief and Smile also fit in that category.

Personally I love the Smile Sessions compilation but the 2004 recording I find lacking.

In future years, prolly something like the top 5 albums on a spreadsheet for the year that hasn't been yet added to AM due to update not happening after that year should also be listed among the albums that are unavailable, and that would close that loophole.

As to nominating albums that are popular, I don't know. I think it's okay, I mean there's still gonna be albums that are obscure too, and pretty often an obscure album ends up winning anyway. But what I would like to pitch is perhaps make it so that top 600 of AM are non-eligible? I think some of us have listened to so many albums on AM that even the 500-600 range is pretty familiar territory already, so I would be in favor of this rule change.

Well, Magical Mystery Tour is eligible, and despite it being an all-time favorite of mine, I deliberately avoided nominating it last year because I had other albums I loved that I thought deserved some more attention from the forum. And we all know how THAT turned out...

Trust me, one of the albums I nominated has no chance of winning. But it's gonna be fun anyway to see if it gets anywhere.

Magical Mystery Tour was in the first BMAA and got upset in the first round by Bridgette Fontaine.

I am still pissed that Annie didn't advance. I still maintain that it's miles, miles, miles better than Hail to the Thief.

I have completed the match-up list for MA8 (Couldn't wait any longer).

To whet your appetite, here's the Week 1 Top Quarter match-up:
Manic Street Preachers - Everything Must Go vs. The Jam - Sound Affects

A little later this evening I'll reveal the other three Week 1 matchups (will start in early March).

Tomorrow I'll send out a link for the entire bracket.

Everyone got 5 entries in. DaveC was last in the randomized list and ended up being the only nominator to get 6 in, due to the snake-around in the order.

Without revealing too much of who-chose-what, two albums were nominated twice:
St Germain - Tourist, which got in on spiritualized's nomination, giving Romain a freebie (plus, was it Romain who nominated the MA2017 Winner this year? Double-bonus if so!)
and Rev Gary Davis - Street Singer, which did not get in due to being too low on both lists.

Stay tuned!

Ooooohhhh boy. Two great albums to start with. This'll be tough (leaning toward Sound Affects, but "A Design for Life" is soooo good...).

Only familiar with Sound Affects (my 1st nomination and my all time favorite album), looking forward to acquainting myself with some albums and artists I wouldn't usually think to listen to. Lots of listening to do this weekend! :D :music-listening:

I'm getting the feeling my 2nd pick was the controversial one, and I'm pretty amazed I'm the only one who picked it.

I didn't nominate any of these, but based on band preference, I already know where my votes are going. Hello, hooray.

Hope you listen to both in each matchup with open mind and don't just go by band preference.

I've heard 3 out of 8 in first week. Only one of my votes so far is clear.

I have 6 entries Brad... Thanks to Spiritualized.
And I have no chance to win...I just see the complete list...Absolutely no chance. I see at least 5 albums I prefer than those I have chosen. But I never play this game for the win, just for bring to light artists or albums I think are not well known.
(and it's why I hope one day this game will become UNACCLAIMED albums with only albums come from outside the AM top 3000 or Bubblers).

Hey, how do you think I feel? I retroactively thought of 4 or 5 albums I could've nominated with a better chance than those I did (or at least a few I could've bumped up - in hindsight, I should've put Strangeways, Here We Come, my #10, higher than I did).

I like Help! better than every album on the list that I know already (though there are many I haven't heard yet), including every album on my submission list. Perhaps that's what initiated my reaction.

I see at least two first round match-ups that I will be voting for the album that faces my nomination. The rest have yet to be decided.
