Rank the Tracks Results (Open 24/7)

Postby Honorio » Sun Jan 15, 2017 4:42 pm

Rank the Tracks is back!

Here it is the new version of the Rank the Tracks game. I named this version "Open 24/7" because my intention is keeping it open for a permanent update at least during the whole 2017. So you can vote for every album of the previous versions hosted by BleuPanda and babydoll. With a difference, while both BleuPanda and babydoll preferred to add the votes on the current threads and not on past threads I ask you to vote on the thread of the particular album you are voting for. I don't mind to see old threads being bumped (I hope Henrik won't mind too) because doing the recount of votes with the album's votes mixed on different threads has been truly a nightmare for me.

These are the features included on the results thread on the Open 24/7 edition of the Rank the Tracks game:
a) Album cover art.
b) Artist, title and year of release.
c) Updated ranking including position and points for every song, like in previous editions. With one big difference: this time there will be no ties. In case of two songs with the same points the song with a higher individual position will get the top position (example: "Pledging My Time" and "Obviously 5 Believers" ended with the same points but the latter was #3 on Gillingham list while the higher position for the former was #7 on ordinaryperson list). If this rule is not enough to break the tie I will check the second (or third) higher individual position (example: "In God's Country" and "Red Hill Mining Town" had the same points, both had a #2 position but "Red Hill Mining Town" was #3 on two lists while "In God's Country" was #3 in one list).
d) Link to the voting thread. As I told before I prefer that you vote on the thread of the actual album you are voting for. The links will make it easier for you (and for me).
e) Number of voters for every album, including the name of the voters. So far the range goes from 4 ("In the Wee Small Hours") to 33 ("Revolver").
f) Biggest fans of every song, including the highest position, so you can check your personal favourites and your "solitary pleasures" (the songs only loved by you).
g) Correlation with critics, as I was doing on the previous editions. Of course the correlation may change with the new updates.
h) Spotify playlist with the songs reordered according to our rankings.

BleuPanda wrote:The basic idea is to rank the tracks off the album each week to see how each track compares to each other. It's an excuse to go back to classic albums and a way to gauge the best and worst tracks of the most acclaimed albums. Simply rank all the tracks from your favorite to your least.

Many thanks BleuPanda for your wonderful idea!!

Please don't use this thread for questions or comments, use instead the questions, comments and stats thread in viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4708

10 | Yellow Submarine | 10
11 | Good Day Sunshine | 11
12 | Doctor Robert | 14
Correlation coefficient: 0,881318681
The first discrepancy with critics came with the very first album, the critics put "Tomorrow Never Knows" at the top but we preferred "Eleanor Rigby." Many more non-coincidences were going to come after this first one. Other differences were "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "For No One," our favourites instead "Taxman" and "She Said She Said."

We kinda agree with the Top 4 but not with the rest of the acclaimed songs, especially with "Adore," #5 for the critics and #15 for us, the longest gap on the whole Rank the Tracks game (on the negative side, The Beatles' "Cry Baby Cry" was on the opposite situation).

Almost the same Top 6 but with a quite low correlation. And the sixth case of non coincidence at the top. Critics' #1,"Everybody Hurts," was only #4, interchanging its position with "Nightswimming," our #1 but only #4 for the critics.

Same Top 2 and after that some changes, the most remarkable wih "War on War," the song that the band (or the record company) chose as the only single from the album but it was the one that we considered worst.

Same song at the top but then an order changing with every update. With a common thread, the songs with "woman" on the title ("Just Like a Woman" and "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35") were higher on the critics' list.

Seventh case of not coincidence at the top, "Ziggy Stardust" was surpassed by "Starman" and "Moonage Daydream." So the kids have killed the man, we should break up the band…

Correlation coefficient: 0,776330011
As expected with an album with so many songs there were many variations between our list and the critics' despite the agreement on the number 1 ("While My Guitar Gently Weeps"). Siginifcant differences on the negative side are "Revolution 1" (#2 for the critics but only #12 for us, but in this case probably most of the critics' acclaim was aimed to "Revolution," the single version) and "Yer Blues" (#12 for the critics but #22 for us) and on the positive side "Dear Prudence" (our #2 but #6 for the critics) and mainly "Cry Baby Cry" (the longest positive gap on the Rank the Tracks game, #8 for us and #24 for the critics).

8 | Any Colour You Like | EmilienDelRey | 1
9 | Brain Damage | Rob, Honorio, maverick470 | 2
10 | Eclipse | andyd1010, maverick470 | 1

Correlation with critics:
1 | Money | 3
2 | Time | 1
3 | Us and Them | 2
4 | The Great Gig in the Sky | 4
5 | Brain Damage | 6
6 | Breathe | 5
Correlation coefficient: 0,771428571
The same 6 songs at the top but the eleventh non-coincidence at the top. It was a question of "Us and Them." The critics got "Money" on their minds but we thought that "Time" is more precious than "Money."
