Rank the Tracks Open 24/7: questions, comments and stats

Post by Honorio »

Rank the Tracks is back!

I tried to contact babydoll some months ago but it seems that he didn't receive my message. So I decided to host a new version of the Rank the Tracks game. I named this version "Open 24/7" because my intention is keeping it open with a permanent update at least during the whole 2017. So you can vote for every album of the previous versions hosted by BleuPanda and babydoll. With a difference, while both BleuPanda and babydoll preferred to add the votes on the current threads and not on past threads I ask you to vote on the thread of the particular album you are voting for. I don't mind to see old threads being bumped (I hope Henrik won't mind too) because doing the recount of votes with the album's votes mixed on different threads has been truly a nightmare for me.

These are the features that are included on the results thread on the Open 24/7 edition of the Rank the Tracks game:
a) Album cover art.
b) Artist, title and year of release.
c) Updated ranking including position and points for every song, like in previous editions. With one big difference: this time there will be no ties. In case of two songs with the same points the song with a higher individual position will get the top position (example: "Pledging My Time" and "Obviously 5 Believers" ended with the same points but the latter was #3 on Gillingham list while the higher position for the former was #7 on ordinaryperson list). If this rule is not enough to break the tie I will check the second (or third) higher individual position (example: "In God's Country" and "Red Hill Mining Town" had the same points, both had a #2 position but "Red Hill Mining Town" was #3 on two lists while "In God's Country" was #3 in one list).
d) Link to the voting thread. As I told before I prefer that you vote on the thread of the actual album you are voting for. The links will make it easier for you (and for me).
e) Number of voters for every album, including the name of the voters. So far the range goes from 4 ("In the Wee Small Hours") to 33 ("Revolver").
f) Biggest fans of every song, including the highest position, so you can check your personal favourites and your "solitary pleasures" (the songs only loved by you).
g) Correlation with critics, as I was doing on the previous editions. Of course the correlation may change with the updates of the AM main lists.
h) Spotify playlist with the songs reordered according to our rankings.

On the two previous editions we ranked 40 albums. My plan is following the same scheme of the first editions until we rank 60 more albums (if there is interest enough by then), a total of 100. Then I'll keep it open for a few months and I'll finally close it. I just hope not to lose the files like BleuPanda or have a computer crash like babydoll. Please feel free for voting for any album of the previous 40 and, of course, for the 60 albums that will follow. I prefer obviously that you vote on the week assigned for every album but I don't mind if you prefer to vote another week or doing some catch-up with previous albums. The more of you participating the better.

Please use this thread for question and comments (or the voting threads) and keep the results thread for the results only.

Now some useless stats from the first 40 albums (that I plan to keep updated).

letmeintomyzone, I'm going to follow the same plan BleuPanda suggested:
BleuPanda wrote:I plan to go in cycles of decades with the 1950s and 2010s once every other cycle.
Next 10 albums are:
1. Sufjan Stevens' Illinois (2005)
2. PJ Harvey's Let England Shake (2012)
3. Frank Sinatra's Songs for Swingin' Lovers! (1956)
4. The Jimi Hendrix Experience's Are You Experienced? (1967)
5. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
6. Pixies' Doolittle (1989)
7. Portishead's Dummy (1994)
8. LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver (2007)
9. Van Morrison's Astral Weeks (1968)
10. Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks (1975)

Many thanks everyone for this massive participation!
And sorry for the bumping threads thing...
I got plans to update the changes every Sunday when I add a new album, otherwise it would be overwhelming for me...

Thanks for bringing this back, Honorio! (Babydoll did indeed disappear rather abruptly; which was kind of unusual, given how enthusiastic he was during the brief time he participated in the forum.) I plan on getting caught up with the albums I haven't rated yet after the year-end poll.

Fantastic first week of this third edition of Rank the Tracks, even overwhelming during the first few hours. 30 of the 40 albums received new rankings. With only one change on the song at the top, "Kid A."
Many thanks to all the voters, especially EmilienDelRey, Romain, Live in Phoenix, andyd1010 and Henry that became the ones with more albums ranked after whuntva and me (see this same thread above to see the updated list).

The only thing that disappointed me a little was the quite low turnout for "Illinois" (a long time favourite of the Forum and not that difficult to rank).
That's why I decided (with Henrik's agreement) that from now on the new album of the week will appear on the main forum and after its first week it will be moved to the Rank the Tracks subforum. But don't hesitate to vote for any album after its first week. Remember, we're open 24/7...

As you might have already noticed by the green color of Honorio's name, I have made Honorio a moderator so that he can move topics.

Rank on!

Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't receive that email that usually comes with the PM - or it got sent to the junk folder. Again, I must apologize for not coming back after my last post several months ago. There were major life crises that prevented my participation. I still haven't even listened to Nick Cave's latest album. Sadly, my computer did indeed ended up needing to be replaced. Sadly, I hadn't backed my hard drive for a year. PEOPLE, BACK UP YOUR HARD DRIVES EVERY WEEK! I suffered major devastating losses with some documents including a kick-ass review that I was just about to post on RYM on Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, several short stories, and a novel that I was working on it and all my notes for it. Oh, and the Rank the Tracks results. AGAIN, PEOPLE, BACK UP YOUR WORK EVERY WEEK! Once I had saved enough for my replacement - I was in some debt at the time - shit hit the fan. 2016 quickly turned into my annus horribilis. It was a time of great turmoil. Donald Trump's win wasn't even the biggest problem I was dealing with.

That being said, I think I'm able to participate once again. My life is back on track once again. I just want to say a few things. Henrik, thank you for running a wonderful forum. Honorio, you deserve to be a moderator, and goddamn it, I'm proud to hand you the reins of Rank the Tracks. You're doing a much better job than I ever did. I like the result pages a lot better. I'm just glad to now that I could be of some service during my time as game-master.

Oh, and on an unrelated side note, I now finally connected with Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.

Hi babydoll!!

I'm really glad to have you back and to hear from you but I'm really sorry to read the news about your annus horribilis, your losses with the computer crash and your major life crises. I just hope all those issues will soon become things from the past and things get much better from now on.
Thank you for your kind words about the new results page. You were an excellent game master, I wouldn't have hosted if you haven't had that computer crash. And I'm looking forward for your participations on the game.
I wish you the best, babydoll, and I think my feeling sums up the feelings of every AMer.
And, believe me, I will follow your advice about making hard drive backups…

8 out of 41 albums had been updated on the second week. Thanks to everyone who participated, especially Romain and Live in Phoenix who are now the fourth and fifth voters with more albums ranked. There has been a change on the song at the top in Beck's "Odelay." Keep on ranking!

6 albums had been updated this third week (Revolver, Nevermind, Odelay, Elephant, Highway 61 Revisited and Horses). Not bad. But we had the lowest participation so far on an album, only 3 voters. And it was with Sinatra again ("In the Wee Small Hours" only got 4). No changes on the top this time (well, "Where It's At" regained the position that lost last week).

Thanks for the update!

A quick update of the results thread only to add the Spotify playlist of "Sign 'O' the Times." You better believe it, Prince is back on Spotify (at least his discography with Warner, let's hope his discography with NPG could be included anytime soon).

This week we had:
- Updates on two albums.
- A new thread with suggestions to additional albums to rank (but so far any album got more than two votes).
- The results for "The Dark Side of the Moon" with the twelfth discrepancy with the critics with the song at the top. It was a question of "Us and Them." The critics got "Money" on their minds but we thought that "Time" is more precious than "Money."

Pixies next week...

Fantastic week, "Doolittle" received votes for 23 voters, including many non-regular and even 2 newcomers (I'm delighted to see that Rank the Tracks could be the point of entrance to the Acclaimed Music Forum) and directly entered the Top 10 of the albums with more voters. Great!

11 updated albums this week, that's really fine. And a new #1 in "Kid A" with "Everything in Its Right Place" regaining this position. It's funny how the rankings change among the different games here, in Rank the Tracks (with 20 voters) the Top 4 is:
1. Everything in Its Right Place
2. How to Disappear Completely
3. Idioteque
4. The National Anthem
While in the recent poll for the year 2000 we had (with 42 voters):
1. The National Anthem
2. Idioteque
3. Everything in Its Right Place
4. How to Disappear Completely
The same 4 four song but (almost) with the opposite order.

Is there a Rank The Tracks for A Love Supreme. I didn't see one in the Rank The Tracks section but I could have swore I saw one at some point?

From a former gamemaster. A Love Supreme is currently #22 on the 1960s list. So, no, you didn't see it.

So does it have to be ranked in the top 10 of the decade to get a Rank The Tracks. I was asking because it's a top 100 album of all time and I didn't see any stipulation on where it had to be ranked in a decade.

The choosing process was by decade, going ...60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s,... with 50s and 10s alternating for each run-through. Since only 100 in total, then you can divide by 6 to get about 16 per decade.
I also don't think this is a very good system, but it's the one we have. That's why afterwards we're voting for future Rank the Tracks here

Sorry bootsy for the delay on the answer. Yes, prosecutorgodot explained it perfectly. And he even included the link to the voting thread for extra albums to rank. I'm keeping track of these albums, so far we have 84 albums suggested but only 8 of them have two people interested. And I don't want to include an extra album with only two potential voters. If any album (like "A Love Supreme" for instance) got more than 4 votes I will include it. So please, everyone, feel free to suggest any album you like to see ranked.

We had 15 voters for "Sound of Silver" who pushed "All My Friends" almost to the Top 10 of the #1s.
This (astral) week we're going to vote for the #49 album on this game. After the #50 we could slip the first "extra" album. So far we have 2 albums voted by three people, "The College Dropout" and "The Low End Theory." I think I'm going to ease the requirements. Only a fourth vote on this thread would be enough to make any of them the #51 album to rank.

A quite good week with 9 albums updated mainly thanks to IllumiThottie and jamieW (that is now the third voter with more albums ranked). 9 were also the voters for "Astral Weeks," a step back from the last 5 weeks where every album achieved more than 10 voters.

Two albums updated including a change on #1, with "Jesus, etc." now as the #1 on "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." Since we had ranked by now exactly 50 albums I've updated the #1s list on this same thread.

No other albums updated but a nice participation on "Purple Rain" with 17 voters. Despite having more #1 votes for "Purple Rain" (the song) we ended with the same Top 4 as the critics (with "When Doves Cry" at #1) but with a change between #3 and #4, we were ready to go crazy with Prince but not to die 4 him.

Massive update with new rankings in 16 albums, mostly thanks to krendler and Listyguy (but also to Moonbeam, bonnielaurel, Jackson and jamieW). And a quite decent participation on "Endtroducing....." with 9 voters (I was expecting less).

Another fantastic week with updates on 15 albums, mostly thanks to IllumiThottie but also to krendler, jamieW, bonnielaurel and Dan (welcome!). And "Revolver" just achieved the quite impressive number of 40 voters!
On the other side a quite poor (and disappointing giving the fact that we just had the Poll for the year 2000) showing for "Stankonia" with only 6 voters (the third album with less voters after the two Sinatra albums). Anyway "B.O.B." went directly to the #3 of best ranked number ones.

10 albums updated thanks mainly to the participation of bonnielaurel (many thanks!) but also of jamieW, krendler, maverick470 and Nassim. And with jamieW's vote for "In Rainbows" every album posted prior to the actual third plase of the game had received at least an update.
But we had a very poor participation on the album of the week ("Here's Little Richard"), the lowest participation so far with only three voters. Hopefully we will have a change this week with "Abbey Road," probably the last album on this game with an expected high number of voters.

9 albums updated and a quite decent participation on "The Stone Roses" (higher than I was expecting). There wasn't a consensus favourite song among "The Stone Roses," 7 of the 13 songs received some #1 vote so "I Wanna Be Adored" ended as the #1 song with fewer points so far.
And jamieW joined me in ranking every album of the 58 albums so far. Hey, Wesley, don't to want to join us again?

10 albums updated with a change on a number one, "Long Tall Sally" overtook "Tutti Frutti" (both songs tied on points but with 3 number one positions for Sally against 1 for "Tutti Frutti"). And 10 people participated on "Achtung Baby," taking "One" almost to the top. If last week we had "I Wanna Be Adored" as the #1 song with fewer points this week "One" entered directly at the #2 position of the number one song with more points.
And a reminder: next Thursday it will be the 50 anniversary of the release of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Maybe it would be the perfect timing to add your ranking to http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... php?t=3533.

A very good week on Rank the Tracks, with:
- 20 albums updated!!!
- 3 new rankings for "Sgt. Pepper's" on the week of its 50th Anniversary made it the second album that received most rankings (after "Revolver").
- 11 new rankings by krendler made him/her the fourth user most active on Rank the Tracks (after whuntva, jamieW and me). Keep on ranking, krendler, jamieW and me are waiting for you to join us at the top!
- 2 new users, essieyessie and Kimijean, made their debuts on AM Forum on Rank the Tracks. Welcome!
- There was a change on a #1 on two albums this week, "Everything in Its Right Place" regained its top position in "Kid A" and the same happened (many months after it lost the top spot) with "Devils Haircut" in "Odelay."

But we had the flip side of the coin with the album of the week. Jay-Z's "The Blueprint" was only ranked by 5 voters, making it the album with less rankings after "Here's Little Richard," tied with "In the Wee Small Hours." It's quite disappointing, especially when the 2001 poll was quite recent and the album was included on the Top 15 of 16 voters and ended as the #6 album of the year. But it's not too late, you can still add your rankings, we're open 24/7…

This week I've introduced a new feature on the results thread, the changes on the rankings with the updates. This week we had changes on the overall rankings on four albums ("Revolver," "The Velvet Underground & Nico," "Songs for Swingin' Lovers!" and "Here's Little Richard"), including a change on the number one on this last album. Here is the change of this #1 as an example:
01 | Tutti Frutti | 1,6 points | +1
02 | Long Tall Sally | 2,8 points | -1
I'll keep these indications of the changes only for a week, from Sunday to Sunday.
