I know The Smiths and The Beatles released a lot of great non-album singles.

Nirvana- Sliver probably won't get mentioned, but I always loved it.

All 5 of ABBA's non-album singles are pretty great. If you're into some pop/synthpop/dance-pop:

The one that first came to my mind was "Join Together" by The Who
