Thoughts on Arcade Fire ft. Mavis Stapes - "I Give You Power"

This is the first song of 2017 that gets me excited. It's right up my alley, with the pop-soul attitude. When I first heard about it, I was intrigued because I like Mavis's voice, even though I'm not a huge fan of Arcade Fire. After hearing it a few times, I love the chorus, it's super catchy. The vocals by Win Butler (?) are tense and nasty, I love it. The drumbeat gets my head bobbing, too. I like the bassline, but it sounds kind of goofy, like it's not heavy enough or something. Also, I wish Mavis Staples was boosted in the mix or had a bigger part.
Overall, I like the song.

I like the song a lot as well. My only complaint is that it doesn't really go anywhere. But the instrumentation sounds really great, like that of Reflektor but pushed even further.

Also, the melody kind of sounds like Gold Digger. Just listen to the song again and see if you can hear the "she takes my moneyyyyy when I'm in neeeeeed".

That and the Gorillaz song are both great.

In hindsight, maybe not. I hope the rest of the album is better.

Really liking the latest song from Father John Misty, "Pure Comedy". The song won't turn anybody who hates him into a fan, but it's enough to leave me very excited for his next LP.

Big fan of AF, FJM & Gorillaz (and also loved Benjamin Clemetine's mercury prize winning debut) but of the 3 recent Trump inspired songs/videos only FJM was an instant hit with me. Still looking forward to all the albums though.

My favorite song of 2017 so far is "Say Something Loving" by The xx. Along with "On Hold", it's a standout on the first great album of the year, in my opinion.

I'm looking for quick recommendations.

As of late I have been too busy to get caught up with the current year, but I have heard a little.

My current favorite is technically a 2016 song, Rag N'Bone Man-"Human". It will be eligible for the EOY by the newly instated "Lazarus clause":

If a song was released as a single the previous year and on an album released in the current year, it is eligible for the current year's EOY if it did not make the previous year's Top 100.

So anyone got something I can peruse?

The Gorillaz tracks are DOPE. And I have hopes that the new Kendrick single delivers (it probably will, being Kendrick and all).

Also, Damon Albarn and a Gallagher brother NOT killing each other on sight. What are the odds?

Kendrick Lamar released a new song called "Humble" yesterday. I've seen some mixed reactions to it from fans, but the critics seem to be liking it. I like it a lot. I think the simple "banger"-like production really works. My only complaint is that the chorus is a bit too repetitive and the first time around it lasts just a little too long. Other than that it's a great song.

Paramore released a new single, "Hard Times". It's a sweet listen, a good pick-me-up if you're having a tough day.
The song and their new image reminds me of a Blondie-revival of sorts.

The new Paramore single, "Hard Times," is the audio equivalent of the Unicorn Frappuccino--that is, the bright, sparkly, sugar rush we all need in troubling times.

I like it a lot. Doesn't sound at all like any of the other Paramore songs I've heard. I especially like Hayley Williams' vocals on this one (though I don't know if I can get used to her having a hair color conceivably found in nature).

The new Paramore song is very enjoyable. Music video is cute too. Makes me wonder, with all this 80s revivalism that has partially defined the decade thus far, what the inevitable 2010s revivalism that we can expect come 2040 or so is going to look like. Are we just going to have an 80s revivalism revivalism? Are we going to spend the rest of history stuck in a 30 year loop of revivalist tenancies, going from 80s revivalism to 90s revivalism to 00s revivalism to 80s revivalism revivalism to 90s revivalism revivalism, each passing cycle of simulacra further diluting the aesthetics of the original decade, until we just reach the point in a couple hundred years where all we can expect of our bands is to play a couple notes on a synthesizer while standing around like extras in a Duran Duran music video only to wait ten more years before those same bands trade in their pastel T-shirts for grunge-era flannel?

Apologies folks, I'm quite tired and rambling here. But you get what I'm saying, right?

Yes, I do and I'm also tired, but not from lack of sleep, but from 80's revivalism. Though I have been from the beginning. It's really surprising how long this has been going on. I though it might be one of those two-year trends or something, but it's been going on for years now, with no end in sight. I don't get the appeal, especially because only rarely does it sound inspired. But that's my ramble.

I also couldn't get it before they stopped making it. I'm not a fan of diabetes, so I'm not sure I miss it.
