I'm absurdly excited for the new War on Drugs album, especially after hearing their great new single "Strangest Thing". And "Holding On" is my favorite song to be released since 2015.

On repeat in my earphones :
I'm not going to say Four Tet outdid himself, because Love Cry but that would be a close race for 2nd spot between that new song, She Moves Me and Locked.
He doesn't get a lot of love on the forum, but damn if that guy isn't ridiculously consistent.

This is awesome! Thanks for all the work in tallying them! And it's great to see four of my favorites at the top.

Overall, I think the list includes a lot more poppy songs that we'll see at year end - especially with "Shape of You" placing so high - but overall it's a good mid year consensus with a long of songs that I think will place high at year end.

Songs that are too high:
Selena Gomez, Bad Liar
Harry Styles, Sign of the Times
Ed Sheeran, Shape of You
Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee, Despicito
Bruno Mars, That's What I Like
Julia Michaels, Issues

Songs that are too low:
Lana Del Rey, Love
Carly Rae Jepsen, Cut to the Feeling
The War on Drugs, Thinking of a Place
Father John Misty, Ballad of the Dying Man
The War on Drugs, Holding On

Songs that are missing:
Fleet Foxes, Third of May
Lorde, Sober
Lorde, Perfect Places
Alvvays, In Undertow

Most of the lists covered all genres but there were a few that were specifically Pop, Hip Hop etc but I included them all as I'd be manipulating it otherwise without having a criteria hence why some pop acts are very high.

I actually think that Selena Gomez' Bad Liar will fare well at year end. A nifty cross between Psycho Killer and O Superman (with some clunky lyrics). Sign Of The Times isn't terrible either! Ed Sheeran is another matter entirely.......

Here are the next 35, or the songs that featured at least 4 times.

2 Chainz f/ Travis Scott, "4 AM" (5)
A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie f/ Kodak Black, "Drowning" (5)
Alt-J – ‘3WW’ (5)
alt-J - In Cold Blood (5)
Drake, "Gyalchester" (5)
Future Islands – ‘Ran’ (5)
Lady Gaga - 'The Cure' (5)
Laura Marling – “Wild Fire” (5)
Mac DeMarco—“On the Level” (5)
Maggie Rogers – ‘On + Off’ (5)
Migos feat. Lil Uzi Vert, "Bad and Boujee" (5)
Queens of the Stone Age - The Way You Used to Do” (5)
Real Estate - "Darling" (5)
Zedd & Alessia Cara, "Stay" (5)
Alex the Astronaut - Rockstar City (4)
Bleachers – “Don’t Take the Money (4)
Brett Young - “In Case You Didn’t Know (4)
Cold War Kids - Love is Mystical (4)
Fleet Foxes - "Third of May / Odaigahara" (4)
Frank Ocean f/ Jay Z and Tyler the Creator, "Biking" (4)
Future - Incredible” (4)

Gucci Mane f/ Offset, "Met Gala" (4)
Kevin Morby - "City Music" (4)

Can we talk about how incredible the new single by Jessie Ware is? I am so over those R&B singers who sing through their damn noses and sound like they are on the verge of passing out. So when Jessie just goes into her mid-range and complete belts the hell out of "Midnight", I am floored.

First single from Taylor Swift's new album is out. And if we can judge by the sound of it (which of course we can't), it looks like she's listening to a lot of hip-hop right now. The lyrics have been interpreted by Rolling Stone as regarding her feud with Kanye West (and the "Famous" song thing, in particular) and after thinking about it a bit, it makes sense, although I originally thought it was a breakup song with a jab at Tom Hiddleston and/or Calvin Harris. The Kanye West thing makes more sense, but feels petty to me. Am I the only one? I have to confess I didn't like "Famous" back then either. All this feels like the music superstars just spilling acid at each other in public, and that's not what I'm looking for when I want entertainment. More generally, I'm indifferent to the "feuds" and whatnot that artists sometimes maintain just to exist in medias.

It's much darker than most of what she's done before (aside from "Trouble", perhaps?) but darker doesn't mean better. Not sure I like it.

Nah, scratch that. I know I don't like it.

I'm just agog. It sounds terrible. I'm all for artists trying out new sounds, but this just sounds like ass. This is the lead single? Really? Say what you will about songs like "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" or "Shake It Off," but they were catchy! They had actual hooks! In the case of the former, it played to Taylor's biggest strengths (big sing-along chorus, being petty). This is just woeful and tuneless. I'm pretty sure it'll be a hit, but I don't know for how long. I feel really let down. Jack Antonoff, why have you forsaken us?

Also, "I'm Too Sexy"? Way better than this. I'll stand by that.
Ultimately, neither Katy Perry nor Taylor wins this. Katy's trying too hard to be socially conscious and Taylor's trying too hard to be edgy. And Kanye is Kanye. Go back to the good stuff!

Looks like a number of major artists are hitting a slump (Taylor but I'll wait for the actual album before judging, Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, in my opinion Kanye West last year, but critics decided otherwise). Perhaps it's time for a new generation to take over.

On the contrary, this is the first Taylor Swift song that I somewhat enjoyed. Sure, it's big room dance-pop, but if you call this tuneless, I'll go ahead and call "Shake it off" grooveless.

I gave it a second shot. Personally, I still don't catch the tune, while "Shake It Off" was instantly stuck in my head for days (and so were "We Are Never Getting Back Together", "Style" or "Out of the Woods"; while "You Belong with Me" still pops up every once in a while but in that specific case I wish it didn't). And I still don't give a shoot about the lyrics and her feud with Kanye. If she's going to complain about what he made her do (that chorus is annoying as heck), then she could just refrain from doing it and be done with it.

The reviews acknowledge that the reaction to the song is polarized. So at least we're not alone.

New Taylor Swift song:

Likes: It's an interesting change of pace for Swift, sonically very adventurous for her. I think she's legitimately gone a bit crazy with fame and feuds though. But it makes for something interesting.

Bad: The chorus is a little underwhelming and out of place (though the "look what you made me do" lyric that drives the song is cool, as if Swift has lost all control over her self and is just powered by what others make her do) and the "telephone call" during the bridge is way too on the nose.

This song is the sonic equivalent of Britney Spears shaving her head or that Kony 2012 guy having a nervous breakdown and masturbating in the middle of the road. It's the sound of fame and celebrity gone wrong, of total paranoia and loss of control. I don't think it's a marketing ploy either. I think Swift has lost it.

I'd give it a 6.5/10

^Wholeheartedly agree with Nick here. I like that Taylor is trying new things sonically but oh boy, that is an under-whelming chorus. The spoken word part about "Old Taylor can't answer the phone right now because she is dead" does not fulfill my thirst for pettiness either. I still remember when she inserted the random conversation in the bridge of "We Are Never Getting Back Together". It was a clever, hilarious moment and she is fully aware of how effective it is.

But I'm still excited to hear the new album because Taylor has always been a terrific songwriter. The girl can write hooks and knockout lines every time.

Well, it apparently dawned on the Queen of Pop that her lead single was getting an unusually tepid reaction by her standards, so she quickly threw at our face the opener for her album, "...Ready for It?" in an attempt to get her marketing campaign back on track. Taylor's new song is admittedly much better than the first, but it only comes across to me as a by-the-numbers pop song, albeit with a rather competent production. Wikipedia claims the song is "critically acclaimed" but personally I'm still not hyped at all for Reputation, which is unfortunate as I liked 1989. Whatever, given the Swifties reaction so far, she won't need my money anyway.

Ok, pop songs have been doing some interesting name-dropping recently. First there was that bit about blink-182 in "Closer," and now I just realized that "dark side of the morning" song mentions, of all bands, The Libertines.
Props to...Selena Gomez, right? I forgot, for being just as big a music nerd as the rest of us. Can't wait to hear Bebe Rexha sing about her fun memories of kicking it to Franz Ferdinand.

Did some more list shuffling. Still looking mostly the same toward the top, but note the large jumps for "Third of May" and "A Lie", as well as the loud debuts of "No Longer Friends" and "Free Smoke". This list is sure to change dramatically once the EOY spreadsheets begin, but you can expect to see the current top 70 or so to remain on my list by January.

I'd like to single out my current #37, "Word of Mouth", as being one of my biggest surprises of the year. Never would I have imagined a Rich Homie Quan track (and a deep cut to boot) would challenge for a top 50 spot, yet here we are! The beat is utterly undeniable and, in a hip hop landscape littered with "mumble rappers", Quan's muffled delivery manages to stand out on this song. If you're predisposed to enjoying trap, I believe a few spins of this tune will be well worth your time.

Anyways, I wanted to get a list out before the official lists start rolling out. Here's hoping they'll help me discover a lot of great songs!

I'm just annoyed that I can't find Wilco's "All Lives, You Say?" on Spotify.

This is my top 15 at the moment. I think "Slip Away" is in many ways "Hounds of Love Part 2" and I hope it will become as well-regarded in the future. I don't usually focus too much on production, but I think the production on that song is amazing. And thank you The War on Drugs for creating "Holding On": a dreamy heartland rock song that sounds like Bruce Springsteen chilling out and thinking about his Born in the USA album. I'm also grateful for the uplifting, funky afrobeat of "Give Me a Reason".

1 | Perfume Genius | Slip Away
2 | The War on Drugs | Holding On
3 | Ibibio Sound Machine | Give Me a Reason
4 | St. Vincent | Los Ageless
5 | Curtis Harding | Need Your Love
6 | Natalia Lafourcade feat. Los Macorinos | Tú sí sabes quererme
7 | Sufjan Stevens | Mystery of Love
8 | Wiley feat. Devlin | Bring Them All / Holy Grime
9 | Sacred Paws | Strike a Match
10 | Susanne Sundfør | Undercover
11 | Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit | If We Were Vampires
12 | Father John Misty | Pure Comedy
13 | Julien Baker | Appointments
14 | LCD Soundsystem | Oh Baby
15 | The National | The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness

...will keep us together.
