Unacclaimed IV 32.2

Post by whuntva »

We now begin the second and final week in the round of 32. For the last four rounds, they will all be across one week.

Here, votes are worth only one point. Pick the song from each pairing you want to see advance. Ties broken now by sudden-death overtime.

Due to the sheer volume of songs, only sixteen per week will be unveiled.

Voting for this round ends 1/8 at 11:59 pm.

Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada vs. Deodato-Super Strut

Charles & Eddie-Would I Lie to You? vs. Ray Barreto-Cocinando

Ananda Shankar-Streets of Calcutta vs. Jacques Brel-Le Plat Plays

Seinabo Sey-Hard Time vs. The Cinematic Orchestra-The Man with the Movie Camera

Angelique Kidjo-Olofoofo vs. Four Tet-Parallel Jalebi

Amy MacDonald-Don't Tell me That It's Over vs. Ali Chukwuma-Ezi Okwu Bu Ndu

Laura Viers-July Flame vs. Archie Shepp-Attica Blues

Journey-Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) vs. David Lynch and Lykke Li-I'm Waiting Here

If there are any links that are not preferred, please let me know.

Angelique Kidjo-Olofoofo 7
Four Tet-Parallel Jalebi 8

Last week was a really tough week for me. There were 4 songs in the round of 32 that I gave a 10, and 3 of them lost last week (Bunsen Burner, Schnittke, and Bill Fay). Now only The Cinematic Orchestra remains for me (though there still are plenty of great songs left in the tournament).

Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada vs.
Deodato - Super Strut

Charles & Eddie - Would I Lie to You? vs.
Ray Barreto - Cocinando
My love for the sound of "Oye Como Va" beats out my liking for an otherwise classic.

Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta vs.
Jacques Brel - Le Plat Plays

Seinabo Sey - Hard Time vs.
The Cinematic Orchestra - The Man with the Movie Camera

Angelique Kidjo - Olofoofo vs.
Four Tet - Parallel Jalebi
I vote for Four Tet because "Olofoofo" seems incredibly dull.

Amy MacDonald - Don't Tell me That It's Over vs.
Ali Chukwuma - Ezi Okwu Bu Ndu

Laura Viers - July Flame vs.
Archie Shepp - Attica Blues
"July Flame" is truly great.

Journey - Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) vs.
David Lynch and Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here
THE HARDEST CHOICE.

All my favorites are pitted against each other in this 32 round (and my least favorite too).
Winning guesses: "Cocinando", "July Flame", "The Man with the Movie Camera" or "I'm Waiting Here"
Preferred: "Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada", "July Flame", "I'm Waiting Here", "Separate Ways"

Poll is closed.

This was a wacky week. Not one, but TWO songs I thought could win it all lost!

Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada 5
Deodato-Super Strut 9

Deodato wins the all-Brazil match. It was a strong match and both songs fought hard, but Deodato pulled out a win.

Charles & Eddie-Would I Lie to You? 4
Ray Barreto-Cocinando 11

Cocinando delivered the most decisive victory of the week. Both songs narrowly survived nasty tiebreakers, but there was no contest here.

Ananda Shankar-Streets of Calcutta 10
Jacques Brel-Le Plat Plays 5

After a 2-2 tie early on, Ananda won big.

Seinabo Sey-Hard Time 6
The Cinematic Orchestra-The Man with the Movie Camera 9

The upset of the tournament!!!!! It was tied at three, but TCO never trailed after that!

Angelique Kidjo-Olofoofo 8
Four Tet-Parallel Jalebi 7

Four Tet led 4-2, but Angelique came back to tie and ultimately win.

Amy MacDonald-Don't Tell me That It's Over 9
Ali Chukwuma-Ezi Okwu Bu Ndu 5

Amy held off a late surge to keep her win streak alive.

Laura Viers-July Flame 8
Archie Shepp-Attica Blues 7

In the other major upset, Laura Viers came on strong and held fast to victory road!

Journey-Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) 4
David Lynch and Lykke Li-I'm Waiting Here 11

Journey's surprise push ends with a decisive victory from Lynch and Li.

Oh man, this really hurts that "Attica Blues" got eliminated, I felt that one really had a chance out of my nominations. :(

Coincidentally enough, The Cinematic Orchestra track is also my nomination, so I guess it was a bittersweet week. This unacclaimed looks like the hardest ever to call...

Both songs were up against my remaining nominations. I love both your songs too and thought "Hard Time" would be the one with a bigger chance to win.

I like both of yours too, Henrik, quite a lot. (Seinabo Sey a bit more.) I was fully expecting Seinabo Sey and Archie Shepp to win, so that shows how much I know!

This all said ... the overall quality of the round of 32 was absolutely fantastic, in my view the most consistently good unacclaimed pool we've had.

I agree about the consistency of these late rounds of the game. Very difficult to make a prediction. In fact, the best thing is not having any clear favorite.
Out of my nominations, Ali Chukwuma's track was my favorite one and I'm glad it has made this far, although I was trully expecting it to win this round. Now I have only one remaining track.
