MCCh 2016 (22) December 31

Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2016 (update December 31)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating and the number of reviews (out of 30 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; LesInrocks; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spin; Tinymixtapes

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, Gaffa.dk, Gaffa.se, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, etc…

Thanks Otisredding for another fantastic year with the Mega-Critic Chart! For one month or so per year, the EOY lists comes in focus, but for the rest of the year you've got everyone's attention. I know that a lot of people visit this forum primarily because of your updates. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

If Otis continues the chart in 2017 (I think the first update is usually on Jan 31st) then the big question is who will be "that guy" this year. Any volunteers? :D
Everyone you meet fights a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.

I'm kinda curious to know the megacritic score for some of the higher rated albums on the end of year lists (Rihanna, The 1975, and Drake for example). Looking forward to this year's megacritic kick off. Thanks Otis for all the effort. Love this site.

Took over four years for your first post! :o I love this site too. :music-rockon:
You know, veganvalentine, a lot of people subscribe to the forum but actually never post, as they're only doing it to read the spreadsheets occasionally posted or simply for having a feeling of belonging to a community. And this despite the community here being one of the frendliest and most welcoming in the music milieu on the Web (although we've gone overboard occasionnally, as people are sometimes more uptight than necessary when it comes to defending their own tastes, whether they are into classic rock, modern indie music or hip-hop, but I believe you can probably count the occurrences in the last ten years with the fingers of only one hand). Some people are just shy or simply don't like to talk.

That's really way down the list, even though some of those who loved the 1975 album the most (Spin, NME, Drowned in Sound) are included in MCCh. Did they give initial great ratings (and everyone else loathed it) or had they changed their opinions when they got to the eoy lists?

Were these albums especially hurt by some really low ratings? I know I have asked before what the MCCh list would look like if you adjusted all poor ratings to a new minimum (say 40 or 50) to get albums with very mixed reviews a better chance to make the MCCh chart. The most common rating is probably 70/100 among reasonably acclaimed albums, so a 0 is a greater loss than a perfect 100/100 is a profit.

There's also the fact that the initial review is often only one writer's opinion.

Rihanna: 83, 67, 72, 60, 70, 67, 67, 70, 50, 69, 50, 60, 60, 70, 70, 80, 83, 75, 80, 77, 40, 80, 70, 80
Drake: 33, 50, 50, 60, 69, 40, 80, 70, 67, 70, 60, 55, 80, 60, 60, 80, 60, 80, 80, 50, 67, 75, 80, 68, 60, 70, 70, 50
1975: 50, 70, 60, 60, 33, 70, 50, 63, 40, 60, 90, 80, 40, 80, 70, 80, 75, 58, 70, 65, 80, 60, 80

These are the scores obtained. The lowest score is 33 points. If I use Henrik's criteria (40 points as a minimum score) the variation in the final score of the album is invaluable.

Thanks Otisredding! Very interesting! These numbers show that the reviews weren't mixed at all. It's rather that every reviewer thought these albums were just ok when they came out.

So the big question: Which is most correct?
A: The albums were rated lower than they would have if the artists were not popular (they were rated relative to the artists' popularity)
B: The albums were listed higher in the EOY lists than they would have if the artists were not popular, because of the artists' popularity/exposure/familiarity

I think answer B. Maybe it's like the publications of multiple critics, say 20, but they all didn't individually hear everything, but they all heard the big popular releases. So when it came time to do lists, they all put Rihanna or Drake on their list somewhere, thus boosting their placements on the final aggregate EOY list that the publication puts out.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to sound rude. I honestly think it's great that that person posted. I'm another person who's used this site for years but only started posting recently.
