Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 7

Post by whuntva »

We begin another week of sixteen songs.

But while voting, please do not forget about rectifying the error in last week's group.

Rank songs from 1-4 with top song receiving 4 points, bottom receiving 1 point. Ties are broken by the number of #1 votes. Top TWO songs advance.

Voting ends 11/20 at 11:59 forum time.

And as a small addendum, if you would like to add to or in any way change your ballot, please make a followup post instead of modifying the original. I am more likely to see it that way. Thank you!

HYPERION GROUP

Deodato - Super Strut
Michael Jackson - Butterflies
Cuts - Bunsen Burner
Phish - Guelah Papyrus

PHOBOS GROUP

HYPERION GROUP

4. Cuts - Bunsen Burner (3.5) - Good atmospheric track - wins the lot for me.
10. Deodato - Super Strut (3.0) - quite good track, very Kool & the Gang, of which I believe Deodato was a member ?
14. Phish - Guelah Papyrus (2.5) - Never been a big fan of Phish or Marillion - not a bad song, but nothing exciting.
15. Michael Jackson - Butterflies (2.0) - one of the slow, boring song from MJ which I don't feel anything special for.

PHOBOS GROUP

1. The New Year - Reconstruction (5.0) - my nomination. The New Year were the Phoenix rising from the ashes of Bedhead. The Texan brothers manage to win it all with this superb song, based on slowcore and its whispered vocals, the brilliant use of the bass guitar and the layered guitars. The buildup of this song is simply incredible, leaving me panting at the end.
5. Strawbs - Medley: Ghosts (Sweet Dreams/Night Light/Guardian Angel) (3.5) - I'm liking this loooong folk-prog track, the melodies are there to catch your attention.
8. James Fountain - Seven Day Lover (3.0) - Classic Northern Soul, like a multitude of other tracks from the vaults. Would not stand out on a Northern Soul compilation, I think.
13. LAKE - Christmas Island (2.5) - far too sweet indie pop for me. The instrumentation is too basic - give me Field Mice any day over this.

DEIMOS GROUP

2. Tocotronic - So jung kommen wir nicht mehr zusammen (4.0) - didn't start very well (the German language is tough to mix with music, although some have succeeded - like Blumfeld), but I had heard other albums from Tocotronic and really liked them. Good idea to follow through, the track gets better and better. Discovery of the week
6. Shurik'n - Lettre (3.5) - a member of the IAM posse, I didn't know this French rap song. Actually pretty good, manages to rekindle the sentiment that IAM portrayed
12. Rodriguez - Cause (3.0) - Oh boy, can one be more miserable ("I lost my job two weeks b4 Christmas") ? Whiffs of Dylan's folk, less poetic, I guess. I do like the instrumentation (folk guitar + strings).
16. Cassiano - A Lua e Eu (1.0) oh. Dear. God. (sorry.)

ARIEL GROUP
3. Catey Shaw - Human Contact (3.5) enjoyable, bouncy pop music
7. Archie Shepp-Attica Blues (3.5) not sure where the blues is in this song, but it has this 70s punch which I enjoyed
9. Martika - Love... Thy Will Be Done (3.0) - I quite like her voice and melody - surprising this is from the 70s too.
11. Mulatu Astatke - Tezeta (3.0), nice smooth jazz - sometimes may just be the ticket. Today, not so much.

I'd like to share a translation of Shurik'n Lettre: http://lyricstranslate.com/fr/la-lettre-letter.html-0
I understand the song has nothing special for those who don't understand french. That's why if you get the time, look at the translation - the message moves me a lot. It's about a grandfather who's addressing to his grandson through... a Letter.

It's from 1991. That production would definitely be surprising if was from the '70s.

When I looked for the song in Spotify I briefly saw this, hence the confusion. I guess there are more than 1 Martika !

Hyperion

Cuts - Bunsen Burner (USA)
Deodato - Super Strut (BRA)
Phish - Guelah Papyrus (USA)
Michael Jackson - Butterflies (USA)

Two great instrumental tracks. Hard to choose but the eerie atmosphere of Cuts gets the slightest edge here.

Phobos

James Fountain - Seven Day Lover (USA)
Strawbs - Medley: Ghosts (Sweet Dreams/Night Light/Guardian Angel) (UK)
LAKE - Christmas Island (USA)
The New Year - Reconstruction (USA)

I had no idea "Christmas Island" was the Adventure time song. Fountain wins what is mostly an uneven, mediocre group. "Lover" is the only song I could see having a chance in later rounds.

Deimos

Shurik'n - Lettre (FRA)
Rodriguez - Cause (USA)
Cassiano - A Lua e Eu (BRA)
Tocotronic - So jung kommen wir nicht mehr zusammen (GER)

Shurik'n reminds me of Dutch rapper MC Brainpower.

Ariel

Archie Shepp - Attica Blues (USA)
Martika - Love... Thy Will Be Done (USA)
Mulatu Astatke - Tezeta (ETH)
Catey Shaw - Human Contact (USA)

The minute I heard "Attica Blues", I knew it would be hard to topple.

I think you might be confusing the American jam-band Phish with Fish, the lead singer of Marillion. (The only reason I caught this is because I am a huge fan of both Fish and Marillion ... but not so much Phish.) ;)

Actually, that is the same Martika; Spotify just messed up on the date. (And the only reasons I know this is because I'd recognize Martika's pretty face anywhere - and she had a hit in 1989 called "More Than You Know.")

Not much time for comments. The Tocotronic track grew more awesome as it went along - a really nice discovery! Awesome to see someone nominate the Prince-penned "Love... Thy Will Be Done". The Prince vocal version is a 10 for me, but Martika's version is great in its own right. I also love the song "Spirit" that he recorded for her album.

Strawbs - Medley: Ghosts (Sweet Dreams/Night Light/Guardian Angel)
The New Year - Reconstruction
James Fountain - Seven Day Lover

DEIMOS GROUP
Cassiano - A Lua e Eu: this video with the live version of the song is not that good; anyway, I don't think results would change with the original one, given the high quality of the other three songs. Cassiano is one of the most important names of Brazilian black music, and "A Lua e Eu" is a great example of his unique touch on music, showing at the same time his eccentric, almost cheeky, corny side, and his beautiful melismatic vocals. After all, he's a very genuine and talented composer, who, along with Tim Maia, was the precursor of our soul music.

Tocotronic - So jung kommen wir nicht mehr zusammen
Rodriguez - Cause
Shurik'n - Lettre

HYPERION
Deodato - Super Strut (50, 5)
Cuts - Bunsen Burner (49, 7)
---
Phish - Guelah Papyrus (32, 1)
Michael Jackson - Butterflies (29, 2)

PHOBOS

James Fountain - Seven Day Lover (46 5)
Strawbs - Medley: Ghosts (Sweet Dreams/Night Light/Guardian Angel) (46, 5)
---
LAKE - Christmas Island (40, 5)
The New Year - Reconstruction (28, 1)

It was back and forth between the top two for some time. If results are correct, we will have a tiebreaker round for seeding. LAKE rallied towards the end but fell just short.

DEIMOS
Rodriguez - Cause (43, 6)
Tocotronic - So jung kommen wir nicht mehr zusammen (40, 6)
---
Shurik'n - Lettre (36, 1)
Cassiano - A Lua e Eu (31, 3)

I called the game with Shurik'n in second early, but Shurk'n lost at the end. Rodriguez held on, though.

ARIEL
Archie Shepp-Attica Blues (45, 5)
Martika - Love... Thy Will Be Done (40, 3)
---
Mulatu Astatke - Tezeta (39, 5)
Catey Shaw - Human Contact (26, 2)

Astatke's attempts at a comeback ultimately fell short.

A little tired right now, so I won't start the group until at least midday tomorrow. Deadline will still be the same.
