Music of the Year 2000: Round 1 Week 3

Post by BleuPanda »

Note: the previous topic is still open for a couple hours.

The rules are simple: vote for your favorite in each match below. The winner will move to the next round. The deadline to vote is Sunday, November 13th at 8 PM CST. Note: I have divided the tournaments into groups of 16 based on the acclaimed music list; that way, lesser known works have a better chance to stand out, instead of facing off against the strongest. That might lead to a weaker final match, but think of it more as a collection of smaller tournaments celebrating different levels of acclaim. I am also going to do the two brackets inverse of each other; the most acclaimed albums with the least acclaimed songs, etc. That way, there's a balance of how much new material you will be expected to listen to, assuming more people are familiar with the more acclaimed works.

Brackets:

Albums:
Johnny Cash - American III: Solitary Man (4.5)
vs.
Koji Kondo - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Original Soundtrack (0.5)

I've always liked how the Man in Black covers some of my favourite songs

The Cure - Bloodflowers
vs.
Cat Power - The Covers Record

First listen for these two (very surprising as I am a big Cure fan), Robert Smith edges it with an attempt to renew Disintegration's success. Cat Power is original, but ultimately very depressing

Doves - Lost Souls (4.5)
vs.
Thomas Newman - American Beauty (4.0)

Lost Souls is a keeper. One of the top 10 for 2000, no doubt. Excellent surprise for American Beauty's OST, although I cannot help but think I heard this recurring melody somewhere else. It was instantly familiar.

Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun
vs.
The Delgados - The Great Eastern (4.5)

Another fave in the Scots - I love this album, the songs are soaring but retain a poppy structure.

Songs:
Phoenix - If I Ever Feel Better
vs.
Air - Playground Love

Sugababes - Overload
vs.
Bob Dylan - Things Have Changed

M.O.P. - Ante Up
vs.
Destiny's Child - Independent Women, Pt. 1

The Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You
vs.
D'Angelo - Untitled (How Does It Feel)

Phoenix - Too Young
vs.
Grandaddy - The Crystal Lake

Spiller - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)
vs.
Moloko - The Time is Now

Toughest match with two very similar tracks in spirit

The New Pornographers - Letter From an Occupant
vs.
Radiohead - The National Anthem

Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely
vs.
Queens of the Stone Age - The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret

Albums

I’m only voting in the two match-ups where I have a clear favourite. I don’t have a clear favourite in the other two match-ups and I don’t think I’ll get round to listening to those albums properly this week.

Johnny Cash - American III: Solitary Man
vs.
Koji Kondo - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Original Soundtrack

Doves - Lost Souls
vs.
Thomas Newman - American Beauty
...will keep us together.

Cat Power - The Covers Record

Songs:
Air - Playground Love
Sugababes - Overload
M.O.P. - Ante Up (note that I'm voting for the version with Busta Rhymes, Teflon and Remi Martin, some lists having cited specifically this version. And well, the original is fun but the remix is seriously insane, like an unstoppable freight train running all over you
D'Angelo - Untitled (How Does It Feel)
Phoenix - Too Young (close one, but Grandaddy is a band that rarely fully delivers for me, strangely given its genre and cult status. He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot would have won though. Don't river Too Young on French radio, unlike the 2 Phoenix songs ranked above it that were on relatively heavy rotation for a rock band)
Moloko - The Time is Now (really like both songs, nice change from the more usual genres in AM)
The New Pornographers - Letter From an Occupant
Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely
