Should the lists of best singers of all time always separate male and female singers?

Post by mat.bez.lima »

Men and women have
completely different
voices. In my opinion, it is
impossible objectively
make a comparison
between a male singer
with a female singer. I saw
people in internet making
comparisons like Freddie
Mercury vs. Whitney
Houston, Ella Fitzgerald
vs. Frank Sinatra, Janis
Joplin vs. Elvis Presley.
These comparisons don't
make sense. In my
opinion, the lists of the
best singers of all time
always should be divided
between male singers and
female singers. Do you
agree with my statement?

I disagree, but I think the vast majority of lists heavily undervalue female singers.

Sure there are differences between male and female vocals, but no bigger than differences between metal and folk vocals, rap and pop vocals, etc. Lists are more meaningful the more specific you categorize but if you're going to try to combine genres, ages, styles no reason to only exclude gender.

If anything its refreshing to see female artists compared to male artists, rather than the typical Kate Bush/Patti Smith comparisons that 98% of women in music endure.
