Music of the Year 2000: Round 1 Week 2

Post by BleuPanda »

The rules are simple: vote for your favorite in each match below. The winner will move to the next round. The deadline to vote is Sunday, November 6th at 8 PM CST. Note: I have divided the tournaments into groups of 16 based on the acclaimed music list; that way, lesser known works have a better chance to stand out, instead of facing off against the strongest. That might lead to a weaker final match, but think of it more as a collection of smaller tournaments celebrating different levels of acclaim. I am also going to do the two brackets inverse of each other; the most acclaimed albums with the least acclaimed songs, etc. That way, there's a balance of how much new material you will be expected to listen to, assuming more people are familiar with the more acclaimed works.

Brackets:

Albums:
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica

OutKast - Stankonia

D'Angelo - Voodoo

Songs:
Richard Ashcroft - A Song for the Lovers
What a great match. a big fan of "By Your Side" but "A Song For Lovers" was a song I could not get enough of in '00 and it stands up...

Ghostface KIllah - Nutmeg

Johnny Cash - The Mercy Seat
JC/Rubin had a knack of taking a great song and making it all their own, this one, "Hurt" and a few others accentuated that...

Linkin Park - In the End
Call it a guilty pleasure... I did spend some time in a post-grunge/nu-metal world...

Erykah Badu - Bag Lady

Mystikal - Shake Ya Ass

Radiohead - Optimistic
I remember buying 'Kid A' on CD (yes, there was a time you had to go to the store on release day) and this was the stand out track on the 1st couple of listens... Over the years one other song from the album has passed it for me, but this still gets me happy when I am sitting at my desk and it comes on one of my Spotify Playlists during the work day...

Yikes. A song at #1 that objectifies and degrades women, and an album at #2 that is blatantly misogynist. I feel a bit uncomfortable ranking those so highly at a time when a certain misogynist clown might become president of a very powerful country. This made me think about something that I find relatively easy to do, but that many others apparently struggle with: separating reality from art. I would definitely want the leader of my country to not be misogynist (among other things), but neither Eminem nor Mystikal are running for president. They reflect attitudes and thoughts that many people men are feeling and thinking, and I believe that in music (and other art forms) there should be a platform for everyone in society to express themselves, not just the politically correct ones. If I met someone in “real life” who expresses views that Eminem and Mystikal express in their music, I wouldn’t like that person. But if they express themselves in an innovative way through music, then I like their art. I try not to let an artist’s behaviour or personality affect my appreciation of their art. Besides, it might be a bit harsh of me to compare Mystikal with Eminem. At least the Mystikal song is humorous and doesn’t take itself too seriously (unlike Eminem’s songs). This brings me to another point: Aren’t people becoming too sensitive? I like “Shake Ya Ass” partly because of the impressively fast rapping and partly because the beats make me want to dance… but what I like most about it is that I feel it very effectively captures the primal nature of human beings as sexual creatures (and I don't think the intention is to degrade women). As Americans would say: this is just my two cents. Let’s see where their two cents take them next week.
...will keep us together.

I will vote Stankonia. Grandaddy is okay but is pretty ordinary for the style.

Albums:
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
vs.
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
I think both the Eminem Show and Fishscale have the best songs, but the 2000 albums are more solid throughout. That's also what makes the difference here, Supreme Clientele (one of the 2 best Wu tang solo albums imo) doesn't have a lot of standouts, but save for 2 overlong skits it never falters, while the Marshall Mathers, while having 3 or 4 songs that best any of those in Supreme Clientele, also has way more skippable material.

Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
vs.
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
I remembered XTRMNTR as a terrible album but I enjoyed it quite a lot this time around, but it's facing an all time top 20!

OutKast - Stankonia
vs.
Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump

D'Angelo - Voodoo
vs.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

Songs:
Richard Ashcroft - Song for Lovers
Ghostface KIllah - Nutmeg
Primal Scream - Kill All Hippies (If you ask which one I'd rather listen, it'd be about a tie, but I'll take an original over a cover that doesn't add much to the original)
Luomo - Tessio (I was quite into Nü metal back then but Linkin Park never worked for me, main offender being their very boring drumming in a genre that had some awesome ones)
Peaches - Fuck the Pain Away
Mystikal - Shake Ya Ass
Radiohead - Optimistic
Common - The Light

"The Light" is fine, but mostly because Bobby Caldwell's "Open Your Eyes" is so great.
