Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 5

Post by whuntva »

Past the halfway point! This game is just warming up!

Rank songs from 1-4 with top song receiving 4 points, bottom receiving 1 point. Ties are broken by the number of #1 votes. Top TWO songs advance.

Voting ends 11/6 at 11:59 forum time.

And as a small addendum, if you would like to add to or in any way change your ballot, please make a followup post instead of modifying the original. I am more likely to see it that way. Thank you!

PALLAS GROUP
Eliza Rickman-Pretty Little Head
La Manzana Cromática Protoplasmática - Indecision
Snowmine - Columbus
Chuck Berry - Reelin' and Rockin'

JUNO GROUP

Tony! Toni! Toné! - Feels Good
Jodi Benson - Part of Your World
Jacques Brel - Le Plat Pays
Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love

VESTA GROUP
Young the Giant - My Body
Four Tet - Parallel Jalebi
Sarah Joy - My Soul Knows Well
Jac Berrocal - Solaris

IXION GROUP
Res - They-Say Vision
Disparition-The Ballad of Fiedler and Mundt
Jackie Wilson - Soul Galore
Desperate Journalist - Control

I decided Schnittke was just enough in the field of Unacclaimed to be considered "non-classical". "Reelin' and Rockin'" is on Henrik's to-add list, but was placed there after the nominating period began, so it has been allowed to compete.

Enjoy!

The version of "Feels Good" in the video seems to be a remix. I intended to include the album version.
IT'S A FUCKING HIT SONG

This week, I'm a lot more "connected" again...

PALLAS GROUP
7. Eliza Rickman-Pretty Little Head 7
10. Snowmine - Columbus 7
12. La Manzana Cromática Protoplasmática - Indecision 6
13. Chuck Berry - Reelin' and Rockin' 6
Difficult to put a legend like Chuck Berry last in anything, but this isn't one of my favorites of his.

JUNO GROUP
1. Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love 10
9. Jacques Brel - Le Plat Pays 7
11. Tony! Toni! Toné! - Feels Good 6
15. Jodi Benson - Part of Your World 6
I've heard quite a bit of Schnittke's music and pretty much love it all, but I hadn't heard this. I've always said I love music that creates the atmosphere of its title, and that's definitely the case here. Just beautiful.

VESTA GROUP
2. Jac Berrocal - Solaris 9
6. Four Tet - Parallel Jalebi 8
8. Sarah Joy - My Soul Knows Well 7
16. Young the Giant - My Body 5
"Solaris" is one of the best finds of the tournament for me so far.

IXION GROUP
3. Disparition-The Ballad of Fiedler and Mundt 9
4. Desperate Journalist - Control 8
5. Res - They-Say Vision 8
14. Jackie Wilson - Soul Galore 6
I think I first heard "They-Say Vision" in 2002 and was impressed by how unique it sounded as compared to the other songs on the radio at the time, and was disappointed that it didn't get more attention. Needless to say, I was thrilled to see someone had nominated it. And then it ends up in the same bracket with one of my favorite songs from last year and an eerie theme that's just perfect for Halloween eve. What a heartbreaking draw for me...

PALLAS
Eliza Rickman-Pretty Little Head (USA)
Snowmine - Columbus (USA)
La Manzana Cromática Protoplasmática - Indecision (ARG)
Chuck Berry - Reelin' and Rockin' (USA)

Miss Eliza is quite the original. A string focused pop star with the voice of Snow White. What could be better? I think I heard Snowmine before somewhere, but I can't put my finger on it.

JUNO
Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love (USSR)
Tony! Toni! Toné! - Feels Good (USA)
Jodi Benson - Part of Your World (USA)
Jacques Brel - Le Plat Pays (BEL)

We have our first Disney song in Unacclaimed. This opens the door for "Let it Go" in Unacclaimed V! I do like it, but Schnittke outdid himself here.

VESTA
Young the Giant - My Body (USA)
Jac Berrocal - Solaris (FRA)
Sarah Joy - My Soul Knows Well (USA)
Four Tet - Parallel Jalebi (UK)

"Solaris" is great, but I found it hard to vote against "My Body".

IXION
Disparition-The Ballad of Fiedler and Mundt (USA)
Desperate Journalist - Control (UK)
Res - They-Say Vision (USA)
Jackie Wilson - Soul Galore (USA)

You can probably guess who nominated Disparition.

Ha-ha! :D

I just classify Disney songs as kids songs most of the time. Just like classical music, I don't think I could compare them to the songs here on AM.

PALLAS GROUP
Snowmine - Columbus
Chuck Berry - Reelin' and Rockin'
Eliza Rickman-Pretty Little Head
La Manzana Cromática Protoplasmática - Indecision

Nothing here that really knocks me off my feet. I kind of like the soundscape Snowmine create, although the tune itself is not too memorable.

JUNO GROUP
Jacques Brel - Le Plat Pays
Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love
Tony! Toni! Toné! - Feels Good
Jodi Benson - Part of Your World

Declaration of Love is indeed quite beautiful, but thanks to this forum I've become something of a Brel lover and I love exploring more of his discography. Le Plat Pays is as engaging as I hoped it would be.

VESTA GROUP
Four Tet - Parallel Jalebi
Jac Berrocal - Solaris
Young the Giant - My Body
Sarah Joy - My Soul Knows Well

It's no secret that I'm quite a big fan of Four Tet, but I've also enjoyed the Jac Berrocal, David Fenech & Vincent Epplay tune a good bit. Those apocalyptic trumpet stabs are great.

IXION GROUP
Jackie Wilson - Soul Galore
Desperate Journalist - Control
Res - They-Say Vision
Disparition-The Ballad of Fiedler and Mundt

The fun song wins.

PALLAS
1. Chuck Berry - Reelin' and Rockin' (USA)
2. Eliza Rickman - Pretty Little Head (USA)
3. La Manzana Cromática Protoplasmática - Indecision (ARG)
4. Snowmine - Columbus (USA)

Chuck Berry sounds good as always. Eliza Rickman creates an original sound with those pizzicatos and percussion instruments.

JUNO
1. Jacques Brel - Le Plat Pays (BEL)
2. Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love (USSR)
3. Tony! Toni! Toné! - Feels Good (USA)
4. Jodi Benson - Part of Your World (USA)

Jacques Brel brings a poetic homage to Belgium, very evocative and beautiful lyrics. Schnittke is an interesting composer who combined many different styles from the past.

VESTA
1. Four Tet - Parallel Jalebi (UK)
2. Sarah Joy - My Soul Knows Well (USA)
3. Jac Berrocal - Solaris (FRA)
4. Young the Giant - My Body (USA)

Four Tet has an warm electronic sound. Sarah Joy's combination of cello and guitar works well.

IXION
1. Res - They-Say Vision (USA)
2. Jackie Wilson - Soul Galore (USA)
3. Desperate Journalist - Control (UK)
4. Disparition - The Ballad of Fiedler and Mundt (USA)

I had the pleasure of seeing Res live as the warm-up act of Mary J. Blige. It's a pity that we haven't heard much of her since. I know Jackie Wilson from his early hits, but this sounds good as well.

Fun fact: Young the Giant's debut was one of my first albums when I was first trying to get deeper into music. So that's why I have a soft spot for them.

No time for long comments this week, but surprised that "Feels Good" qualifies for this game! That song seemed like a revelation back in 1990. That Eliza Rickman song is sooooo catchy. And yes, Res was such a surprise back in 2002 with this awesome song and video, back when neo-soul was the go-to genre for new black artists, she came out with something completely out of left field.

And we finish another very close week. As always, please check for errors! I don't care how foolish they make me look, I want to be accurate as possible.

PALLAS
Eliza Rickman-Pretty Little Head (45, 6)
Snowmine - Columbus (39, 3)
---
Chuck Berry - Reelin' and Rockin' (34, 2)
La Manzana Cromática Protoplasmática - Indecision (32, 4)

"Indecision" led by a large margin early, but Eliza kept holding on and eventually overtook the Argentine band. Snowmine was never far behind either of them.

JUNO
Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love (49, 7)
Jacques Brel - Le Plat Pays (45, 5)
---
Tony! Toni! Toné! - Feels Good (39, 3)
Jodi Benson - Part of Your World (18, 0)

The story of the tourney was how dominant both Schnittke and Brel were in this stage of the game. Schnittke dominated early and Brel was always in tow. While it could be that one of these two wins it all, the beauty of this game is the surprise of the draw. Just like with Satie in II and Janelle in III, the favorite in group play does not always win it all. I don't think anyone saw "Soretsu" coming last year. So let's wait and see.

VESTA

Jac Berrocal - Solaris (49, 8)
Four Tet - Parallel Jalebi (45, 5)
---
Sarah Joy - My Soul Knows Well (35, 0)
Young the Giant - My Body (31, 3)

Sarah Joy and Young the Giant put in valiant efforts, but Jac was dominant throughout. Four Tet only emerged in the waning hours of the week.

IXION

Desperate Journalist - Control (40, 4)
Res - They-Say Vision (40, 4)
---
Jackie Wilson - Soul Galore (38, 5)
Disparition-The Ballad of Fiedler and Mundt (32, 2)

If there are no objections, there is a tie for the lead and first place votes. I do think a separate tiebreak post would be the best way to resolve this, but again, only if necessary. This was always close, with at one point a three way tie. DIsparition led for a bit, but fell behind quick. So the question is not who advances, but in what order.

Desperate Journalist - Control (40, 4)
Res - They-Say Vision (40, 4)
---
Disparition-The Ballad of Fiedler and Mundt (30, 2)

So, I think Jackie Wilson should advance as the winner of Ixion, and Desperate Journalist and Res should be vying for second place! The tiebreaker you started is still valid, but it would be for advancement and not just deciding 1st and 2nd place.
