Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 3

Post by whuntva »

Another Week, Another round of Unacclaimed!

Rank songs from 1-4 with top song receiving 4 points, bottom receiving 1 point. Ties are broken by the number of #1 votes. Top TWO songs advance.

Voting ends 10/23 at 11:59 forum time.

And as a small addendum, if you would like to add to or in any way change your ballot, please make a followup post instead of modifying the original. I am more likely to see it that way. Thank you!

Hi whuntva,

FYI - the Young Gods link doesn't work for me. I found another one on Dailymotion

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xc5i9r ... eyes_music

or for YT, two links :
It's also available on Spotify

Also, is the Fleetwood Mac version supposed to be live ?

Really quick so I can only do Saturn group Right now.

Squalloscope-Big Houses (SWE)
Hozier-Arsonist's Lullabye (IRL)
Young Gods-Summer Eyes (SUI)
Fleetwood Mac-I've Got a Mind to Give Up Living/All Over Again (USA/UK)

Young Gods were an interesting discovery and would have won most of the groups unveiled to date.

And all the rest...

URANUS

Ananda Shankar-Streets of Calcutta (IND)
Sondre Lerche-Sentimentalist (NWY)
Aphex Twin-flim (UK)
Neil Cicierega - Crocodile Chop (USA)

Sondre seeks to become the third Norwegian act this tourney to advance. He's in a good spot to do so thus far.

NEPTUNE

Angelique Kidjo-Olofoofo (BEN)
Tears for Fears feat. Oleta Adams - Woman in Chains (USA/UK)
Pure Reason Revolution - The Bright Ambassadors of Morning (UK)
Jeff Hanson-You and I Alone (USA)

Two pretty interesting tracks and two not so much.

PLUTO

Nujabes-Feather (JPN)
Sonya Kitchell-Tinted Glass (USA)
Nightwish-Amaranth (FIN)
Jewel-Morning Song (USA)

Nujabes on a whole new level compared to the rest of them. The other three weren't bad, but there could be only one.

Lots of good stuff this week, but I definitely preferred last week overall...

SATURN GROUP
3. Fleetwood Mac - I've Got A Mind To Give Up Living/ All Over Again 8
8. Hozier-Arsonist’s Lullabye 7
9. Squalloscope-Big Houses 7
11. The Young Gods - Summer Eyes 6

URANUS GROUP
1. Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta 8
4. Neil Cicierega - Crocodile Chop 8
7. Sondre Lerche - Sentimentalist 7
12. Aphex Twin - flim 6
Sometimes you really have to wonder what inspired a song. The combination of Elton and SOAD would be one of those times...

NEPTUNE GROUP
5. Angélique Kidjo - Olofoofo 7
6. Pure Reason Revolution - The Bright Ambassadors of Morning 7
13. Tears for Fears feat. Oleta Adams - Woman in Chains 6
14. Jeff Hanson - You and I alone 6

PLUTO GROUP
2. Nightwish - Amaranth 8
10. Nujabes-Feather 6
15. Sonya Kitchell - Tinted Glass 5
16. Jewel - Morning Song 5
Someone has a lot more courage than I do. My love for Nightwish is no secret, but since I know they're reviled by most, I'd never dare nominate them for anything. (Spoiler alert: Since I'm insecure about most of my personal favorites, this was another game where I didn't nominate anything.) I really enjoy "Amaranth," but it's only about my 8th favorite song off "Dark Passion Play." The fact that "DPP" may very well be my #1 album is a large reason why I've also never dared vote in the all-time albums poll.

SATURN GROUP
Hozier-Arsonist’s Lullabye
The Young Gods - Summer Eyes
Squalloscope-Big Houses
Fleetwood Mac - I've Got A Mind To Give Up Living/ All Over Again

Summer Eyes' first ten minutes were pretty engaging, but after that it started getting a bit monotonous. Arsonist’s Lullabye is the track I'd probably be most likely to put on myself, a pleasant, not-too-despaired, radio-friendly track.

URANUS GROUP
Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta
Aphex Twin - flim
Neil Cicierega - Crocodile Chop
Sondre Lerche - Sentimentalist

Streets of Calcutta is awesome, even edging out Flim, which is not among my personal top-tier favourites of AFX. Crocodile Chop is a fun mash-up, but probably nothing I'd listen to more than two or three times.

NEPTUNE GROUP
Jeff Hanson - You and I alone
Angélique Kidjo - Olofoofo
Tears for Fears feat. Oleta Adams - Woman in Chains
Pure Reason Revolution - The Bright Ambassadors of Morning

I was about to say that this is a rather bland bracket, but then I got caught totally off-guard by Jeff Hanson's voice. Damn.

PLUTO GROUP
Nujabes-Feather
Jewel - Morning Song
Nightwish - Amaranth
Sonya Kitchell - Tinted Glass

Nice bracket with a very accessible, relaxed rap jam by Nujabes (with verses by Cise Starr & Akin of the rap group Cyne), beautiful folk-pop by Jewel and a great, albeit (unsurprisingly) pompous chorus by Nightwish.

SATURN

Fleetwood Mac - I've Got A Mind To Give Up Living/ All Over Again: 8
Hozier - Arsonist’s Lullabye: 7.5
The Young Gods - Summer Eyes: 7
Squalloscope - Big Houses: 7

Very close group. Would not have thought I'd have gone with non-female fronted Fleetwood Mac, but this game is full of surprises. I really wanted to love "Summer Eyes", and maybe after a few more listens I will.

URANUS

Sondre Lerche - Sentimentalist: 8
Aphex Twin - flim: 7
Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta: 6.5
Neil Cicierega - Crocodile Chop: 6

Sondre Lerche is a really nice discovery!

NEPTUNE

Pure Reason Revolution - The Bright Ambassadors of Morning: 8
Angélique Kidjo - Olofoofo: 8
Tears for Fears feat. Oleta Adams - Woman in Chains: 6
Jeff Hanson - You and I Alone: 6

Very close call between the top 2. I'll give a slight edge to Pure Reason Revolution for its various twists and turns, but Angélique was immensely likeable as well.

PLUTO
Nujabes - Feather: 6
Nightwish - Amaranth: 5
Sonya Kitchell - Tinted Glass: 5
Jewel - Morning Song: 4

Not my favorite group. The Nightwish track was the most interesting - I'm not sure I've heard pop and metal cavort quite this way before.

The Young Gods - Summer Eyes
Squalloscope - Big Houses

Please do vote in the albums poll and other polls if you feel you're interested - all of us have songs/albums/artists we like that aren't so well celebrated here, but this has to be the safest forum to share such things. I'd be very interested to hear what you would have nominated for this game!

Thanks, Moonbeam. I did think long and hard about submitting a list of nominations this time, since I do have quite a few favorites that forum members may enjoy. One of my only nominations ever was "Every Little Thing" by Royksopp & Robyn for the weekly AMF chart, and it made our Hall of Fame, so it's not like I'm basing my fears on some long history of rejection. Anyway, you've talked me into it - I promise to participate next time! :happy-partydance:

And so ends Week 3. This week was pretty entertaining with a lot of comebacks and close results. Once again if you think I goofed up, please tell me so.

SATURN
Fleetwood Mac - I've Got A Mind To Give Up Living/ All Over Again (44, 4)
Hozier-Arsonist’s Lullabye (39, 3)
---
The Young Gods - Summer Eyes (34, 4)
Squalloscope-Big Houses (33, 3)

Young Gods held a strong lead early before falling behind fast. Fleetwood Mac came from a fairly distant third to take the group at the last minute. Squalloscope did well and was at one point in a position to advance, but fell short over the weekend.

The low number of #1 votes between the four shows how divisive this group was and how much vote-splitting there was.

Hozier will play Mari Boine and Fleetwood Mac draw Lula and Ze next round.

URANUS
Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta (39, 5)
Aphex Twin - flim (38, 3)
---
Sondre Lerche - Sentimentalist (35, 4)
Neil Cicierega - Crocodile Chop (28, 2)

By far the closest group. Was a three-horse race back and forth. Ananda never held more than a three-point lead.

Ananda Shankar will take on Silversun Pickups and Aphex Twin gets Cymande next round.

NEPTUNE
Angélique Kidjo - Olofoofo (37, 4)
Pure Reason Revolution - The Bright Ambassadors of Morning (36, 4)
---
Tears for Fears feat. Oleta Adams - Woman in Chains (32, 3)
Jeff Hanson - You and I alone (25, 2)

Angelique held onto a lead that was as high as six. Pure Reason was able to come within striking distance late but to no avail.

Angeliqe Plays Astro and PRR gets Prince in the elimination round.

PLUTO
Nujabes-Feather (45, 7)
Nightwish - Amaranth (35, 3)
---
Sonya Kitchell - Tinted Glass (31, 1)
Jewel - Morning Song (29, 3)

Nujabes led early and large as this group was never in doubt. A surprisingly impressive performance by Nightwish overtook Sonya late enough to advance.

Nujabes gets Laura Viers while Nightwish draws Mylene Farmer next round.

The only differences I have don't affect the order.

I have Saturn as:

Fleetwood Mac: 43 (4)
Horzier: 38 (3)
The Young Gods: 36 (5)
Squalloscope: 33 (3)

I have Pluto as:

Nujabes: 45 (7)
Nightwish: 34 (3)
Sonya Kitchell: 31 (1)
Jewel: 30 (3)
