Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 2

Post by whuntva »

Time for another week.

While we await the results of Week 1, Let's start Week 2. I won't start the tiebreaker until I am 100% sure we even have a tie.

Rank songs from 1-4 with top song receiving 4 points, bottom receiving 1 point. Ties are broken by the number of #1 votes. Top TWO songs advance.

Voting ends 10/16 at 11:59 forum time.

VENUS GROUP
Audioslave - I Am the Highway
Frank Sinatra - Michael and Peter
Michael Jackson - Earth Song
Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi

MARS GROUP
Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me
The Cinematic Orchestra - The Man With the Movie Camera
Buddy Rich - Nutville
Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution

CERES GROUP
Thee Oh Sees - I Was Denied
Sam Roberts - No Sleep
Dogbowl - Silkworm Exploding
Jane Birkin - Le velour des vierges

JUPITER GROUP
Mitski - Shame
The Bird and The Bee - How Deep Is Your Love
Annie-Anthonio
David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here

Happy voting!

The Bill Fay youtube link is for side 1 of the album - which doesn't include the title track.

This is the video I found.

Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution

The video for 'Doesn't Remind Me' is a real gem.

The link to "Anthonio" is the Berlin Breakdown version. There original is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEYjuRKLa6g

But I don't know which version was intended.

Just a quick suggestion - would it be possible, rather than YT links, to post the Spotify list every week and add the non-spotify songs on YT links ?
This would avoid several versions, etc... much more practical too.

VENUS GROUP
Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi = 4.0 - The duo edges the King of Pop for an undertoned, beautiful song, the total opposite of Earth Song, actually.
Michael Jackson - Earth Song = 3.5 Great song, soaring and emotionally charged, but a bit over-dramatic
Audioslave - I Am the Highway = 3.0. The whole is actually worth less than the sum of its parts in Audioslave. I loved both Soundgarden & Rage against the Machine, but Audioslave, with all their promises, never managed to wow me - with the exception of Cochise, a great track. Underwhelming.
Frank Sinatra - Michael and Peter = 2.5 Frank doesn't move me much outside of his greatest hits.

MARS GROUP
Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me =3.5 Much better song than in the previous group, the song dynamics are excellent.
The Cinematic Orchestra - The Man With the Movie Camera = 3.5. I have always been partial to downtempo/nu-jazz. Great background music but sufficiently sophisticated to raise the interest when listening.
Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution = 3.5 Very good song, it would have been first if not for the "improvisation" part at the 3:00 mark, it didn't need this.
Buddy Rich - Nutville = 1.5 Really not a fan, never been a jazz fusion admirer.

CERES GROUP
Sam Roberts - No Sleep = 5.0 Such a great song. Mellow, melodious but upbeat. Bonus points for the French lyrics with virtually no accent.
Thee Oh Sees - I Was Denied = 3.5 One of the most basic tunes in this tournament so far, couldn't be simpler. That's what makes it attractive !
Dogbowl - Silkworm Exploding = 3.0 Feels like it's goofy for the sake of being goofy. Musically OK though.
Jane Birkin - Le velour des vierges = 3.0 Jane's ethereal voice is heightened by the reverb effect on this track. The guitar part is really good, but too much focus on the voice at the beginning to attract my attention.

JUPITER GROUP
The Bird and The Bee - How Deep Is Your Love = 4.0 Brilliant cover, they have improved on the original. The singer's voice is magical.
David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here= 4.0 Indeed there is a very strong whiff of Twin Peaks OST in this song.
Annie - Anthonio = 3.5 Rather good electropop, liking it
Mitski - Shame = 3.0 Average song, underwhelmed by my first experience of Mitski. Heard a lot of good things about her, though.

Also, the link for "Le Velours Des Vierges" goes to a version by Élodie Frégé. Here's a correct link:

That worked. Thanks Sweepstakes Ron!

VENUS GROUP
1. Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi
9. Frank Sinatra - Michael and Peter
12. Michael Jackson - Earth Song
15. Audioslave - I Am the Highway

A&M head and shoulders above the rest. I discovered Sinatra's "Watertown" a year ago. A very underrated album, but the first two songs on the album are stronger IMO.

MARS GROUP
3. Buddy Rich - Nutville
4. The Cinematic Orchestra - The Man With the Movie Camera
11. Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution
13. Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me

Two clear Winners for me. "Nutville" was a great new discovery. Thanks to the person who nominated this. More recommendations in this vein please!

CERES GROUP
5. Jane Birkin - Le velour des vierges
6. Sam Roberts - No Sleep
8. Thee Oh Sees - I Was Denied
14. Dogbowl - Silkworm Exploding

JUPITER GROUP
2. David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here
7. Annie-Anthonio
10. Mitski - Shame
16. The Bird and The Bee - How Deep Is Your Love

Wow, this Lynch/Li song is just as good as Badalamenti/Cruise! Which is saying A LOT. Lykke Li's voice is just wonderful. "How Deep Is Your Love" on the other hand, could have been my thing, but annoying pronounciations take it from a nice but insignificant cover to, well, annoying.

I'm always a little hesitant to rate the songs in Unacclaimed since I figure, perhaps more than any other game, these songs mean the most personally to the nominators. However, since I'm bound to like the vast majority of these, and they are just personal ratings after all, I figured I'd give it a shot...

VENUS GROUP
3. Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi 9
10. Michael Jackson - Earth Song 7
11. Frank Sinatra - Michael and Peter 7
14. Audioslave - I Am the Highway 6

MARS GROUP
1. The Cinematic Orchestra - The Man With the Movie Camera 10
2. Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution 10
9. Buddy Rich - Nutville 7
16. Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me 5
What were the odds that 2 of the songs that made my last all-time top 500 list would end up in the same bracket in the first round of an Unacclaimed game? (And I didn't nominate either one...)

CERES GROUP
7. Sam Roberts - No Sleep 7
8. Jane Birkin - Le velour des vierges 7
12. Dogbowl - Silkworm Exploding 6
15. Thee Oh Sees - I Was Denied 6

JUPITER GROUP
4. Annie-Anthonio 9
5. Mitski - Shame 8
6. David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here 8
13. The Bird and The Bee - How Deep Is Your Love 6
Annie's ethereal voice and haunting dance beats always make me feel that I'm back in the dance clubs in the late '80s. (And, of course, this predated Annie, but it says a lot about her ability to create atmosphere. "Anthonio" is probably my favorite song of hers.)

Surprised 'Doesn't Remind Me' appears at or near the bottom of so many people's rankings. A few years ago (before I had looked seriously at any critics' lists) I made a playlist called "How could anyone not like this?" and I put that song on the list...I figured I could play every song on that list in front of anyone and not get a negative response. I understand the lack of widespread appeal/acclaim in many of my unacclaimed favorites, but this one still confuses me.

I knew the Cinematic Orchestra must be your nomination, but I wasn't so sure about "Time of the Last Persecution" since I thought there were other Bill Fay fans on the forum. It was your all-time list that I initially discovered both of them, though, so thanks again! Both are truly remarkable in their own unique way...

Doing mine in parts

VENUS
Je Pense a Toi (MLI)
I Am the Highway (USA)
Earth Song (USA)
Michael and Peter (USA)

What a boring group. Especially the bottom two. "Je Pense" is a great song though; easily the best of the week!

MARS GROUP
The Man with the Movie Camera (UK)
Nutville (USA)
Doesn't Remind Me (USA)
Time of the Last Persecution (UK)

So yeah, Audioslave got a bad break. Though to be fair, "Cochise" is ineligible (bubbling under).

Second half comes later.

VENUS GROUP: Strongest group this week. Earth Song is probably the last MJ recording where his voice sounded at its absolute best. It shows his concern for the environment without getting sentimental, and I like the full-bodied sound. A&M is a good example of the rich heritage of West African folk music. Frank Sinatra is one of the greatest vocalists, although I prefer his lighter voice in his early period. Audioslave is good too, but unlucky with the draw.
1. Michael Jackson - Earth Song
2. Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi
3. Frank Sinatra - Michael and Peter
4. Audioslave - I Am the Highway

MARS GROUP: Big band jazz of the seventies is an often overlooked part of jazz history, and Buddy Rich is one of the greatest percussionists and one of the most eccentric characters in that history.
1. Buddy Rich - Nutville
2. Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution
3. Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me
4. The Cinematic Orchestra - The Man With the Movie Camera

CERES GROUP: This group is a bit weaker than the others, so Jane with her sultry voice takes it.
1. Jane Birkin - Le velour des vierges
2. Sam Roberts - No Sleep
3. Dogbowl - Silkworm Exploding
4. Thee Oh Sees - I Was Denied

JUPITER GROUP: Four girly voices that sound a little bit alike. I like the punch line of Annie's song. Impossible to guess who submitted this.
1. Annie - Anthonio
2. Mitski - Shame
3. The Bird and The Bee - How Deep Is Your Love
4. David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here

VENUS GROUP
Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi
Audioslave - I Am the Highway
Michael Jackson - Earth Song
Frank Sinatra - Michael and Peter

I agree that it's pretty incredible that Je pense à toi is unacclaimed, given that Amadou & Mariam have already garnered some acclaim for other works. Also I had more fun with I Am the Highway than I thought I would, it does have a certain grandiose classic rock vibe to it.

MARS GROUP
The Cinematic Orchestra - The Man With the Movie Camera
Buddy Rich - Nutville
Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution
Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me

I recommend everyone to listen to Nutville on Spotify. It's there under the name "Nuttville". The quality on YouTube is unbearable. It really becomes a whole new song on Spotify, closely edged out only by the equally awesome The Man With the Movie Camera. Really strong group overall, although Audioslave didn't work out as well for me this time.

CERES GROUP
Thee Oh Sees - I Was Denied
Sam Roberts - No Sleep
Dogbowl - Silkworm Exploding
Jane Birkin - Le velour des vierges

Another strong group. No Sleep and Silkworm Exploding are two pleasant pop tunes, with the more conventional Sam Roberts song edging out the quirkier Dogbowl effort this time. But they both stand no chance against the infectious garage punk ditty of Thee Oh Sees.

JUPITER GROUP
David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here
The Bird and The Bee - How Deep Is Your Love
Annie-Anthonio
Mitski - Shame

This was hard to rank, as neither song did really much to me. I'm Waiting Here stands a good bit above the rest, though. Also, on a completely unrelated note, I just noticed how much Lykke Li reminds me of Grimes when hitting higher notes.

VENUS GROUP
Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi
Frank Sinatra - Michael and Peter
Audioslave - I Am the Highway
Michael Jackson - Earth Song

It feels weird to rank a MJ song at the bottom, but the other three songs are quite good.

MARS GROUP
Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me
Buddy Rich - Nutville
Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution
The Cinematic Orchestra - The Man With the Movie Camera

I'm surprised I have liked the Audioslave tracks, I've never heard their music before. The Cinematic Orchestra song had a lot of movements, which in a way keeps things interesting, but it wasn't very emotionally moving. The other two tracks were kind of meh. Overall a weak group.

Good finds: Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi, Frank Sinatra - Michael and Peter

CERES GROUP
Sam Roberts - No Sleep
Dogbowl - Silkworm Exploding
Jane Birkin - Le velour des vierges
Thee Oh Sees - I Was Denied

Sam Roberts sounds like Paul McCartney singing "She's So Heavy", which was a bit distracting, but the other tracks were not as enjoyable. The echo on the Jane Birkin track was obnoxious; additionally, it's probably a case of "I need to know the english translation" to fully get it. I enjoy the Dogbowl song for its humor. Thee Oh Sees song has a chorus that seems incredibly basic?

JUPITER GROUP
Annie-Anthonio
David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here
Mitski - Shame
The Bird and The Bee - How Deep Is Your Love

Ughh the cover of "How Deep is Your Love" will probably end up being my least favorite of the entire tournament. I feel zero emotion coming through; the vocals sound like karaoke, and to add insult to injury, even the instrumental sounds like the instrumental that would back the karaoke (you know, how karaoke machines don't have the rights to the instrumental, so they muster up a bland sparse version)! I also have a problem with that type of modern female singer-songwriter vocals. I don't know what it is about them. Maybe the way they say every word very carefully, which doesn't sound natural to me, yet at the same time the lilt/inflection they put on is intended to be "natural", so that juxtaposition makes the vocals all the more infuriating?
The Annie and Lynch/Li songs are pretty good.

Standouts: Annie - Anthonio

Michael Jackson - Earth Song: 9.5
Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi: 7
Frank Sinatra - Michael and Peter: 6.5
Audioslave - I Am the Highway: 5

I'm shocked "Earth Song" qualifies for the game. It's a great single, one of the few from HIStory. Amadou & Mariam could really grow on me with time, but will have to settle for second place now. The Frank Sinatra song is the very first Sinatra song that I haven't disliked (not that I've heard that many).

MARS:

Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution: 8
The Cinematic Orchestra - The Man With the Movie Camera: 7
Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me: 6
Buddy Rich - Nutville: 4

"Time of the Last Persecution" is an eye-opener for sure! I agree with previous coments that "The Man With the Movie Camera" is more interesting than emotionally engaging, at least at this stage.

CERES:

Sam Roberts - No Sleep: 7.5
Jane Birkin - Le velour des vierges: 7
Dogbowl - Silkworm Exploding: 6.5
Thee Oh Sees - I Was Denied: 5

That synth hook in "No Sleep" is very good! I find the verses more enjoyable than the choruses, but one of the great things about this game is to see how these opinions change over time. Tough call between Jane Birkin and Dogbowl, but the delicacy of Jane just edges out second place for me.

JUPITER:

Annie - Anthonio: 10
David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here: 8
Mitski - Shame: 8
The Bird and The Bee - How Deep Is Your Love: 6

"Anthonio" is one of the greatest songs of the 21st century. I've had a few chances to get into Lykke Li, and I haven't taken any of them up before - she's always seemed interesting enough to explore, but I just hadn't gotten around to it. That will change now! Mitski is also a really great find.

Annie's from Norway, not Denmark.

^Fixed.

Also, most of these matches felt more decisive, at least relative to last week.

Would still appreciate some recounts in the final hours of this week, but most of the group winners at least were clear. There is one group where second place is still close though.

If there are no further objections, we shall move on.

VENUS GROUP
Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi (62, 9)
Frank Sinatra - Michael and Peter (47, 5)
---
Michael Jackson - Earth Song (46, 4)
Audioslave - I Am the Highway (36, 1)

This group was decisive in terms of the winner, but second place was a point of contention. Only a recount sent Frank through.

MARS GROUP

Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution (51, 7)
The Cinematic Orchestra - The Man With the Movie Camera (46, 4)
---
Buddy Rich - Nutville (45, 3)
Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me (38, 4)

Close early on, but Billy was able to pull ahead as Buddy gradually lost steam.

CERES GROUP
Sam Roberts - No Sleep (54, 7)
Jane Birkin - Le velour des vierges (46, 7)
---
Thee Oh Sees - I Was Denied (35, 2)
Dogbowl - Silkworm Exploding (35, 1)

Tale of the tape here, as we had two songs matching two different top vote totals. Sam Roberts roared late as Jane continued to hold strong. Though both had an identical number of #1 votes, Jane was more polarized and Sam was more consistently near the top.

JUPITER GROUP
Annie-Anthonio (52, 8)
David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here (45, 4)
---
Mitski - Shame (43, 3)
The Bird and The Bee - How Deep Is Your Love (30, 2)

Back and forth until the weekend when Annie pulled ahead.

I say both A&M and Annie are good picks to go far. Join me for round 3 in a few minutes.
