Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 1
Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 1
Time to begin the largest Unacclaimed field in history. Let's reveal the first four sets of four on this glorious day.
Rules are simple. Rank the four songs 1-4 in each group, with the top receiving four points and the bottom receiving one point. If there is a tie at the end of the week, ties are broken by first place votes.
Since 16 songs seems a bit daunting, you don't have to vote for EVERY group all at once.
Voting ends on October 9 at 11:59 pm forum time.

SUN
Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother (NWY)
Yoko Takahashi - A Cruel Angel's Thesis (JPN)
Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada (BRA)
Jil is Lucky-The Wanderer (FRA)
Mari stood out. It felt like a good crash course into Sami culture. While I may prefer last year's runner-up "Tank!", "Thesis" is still a solid anime theme.
MOON
Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat (NZL)
Prince - Way Back Home (USA)
Astro - Colombo (CHL)
Charles aznavour - She (FRA)
All above average songs from respective artists, but "Flicker" is probably my favorite Lorde song overall. "Columbo" may take a few more listens to fully adjust to.
EARTH
Silversun Pickups-Panic Switch (USA)
Cymande - The Message (UK)
Rise Against - Prayer of the Refugee (USA)
Big L - Put It On (USA)
"Panic Switch" is one of those songs in the "is that really unacclaimed?" category.
MERCURY
Mylène Farmer - Sans logique (FRA)
Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant au royaume des mouches (FRA)
Laura Veirs - July Flame (USA)
Billy Joel - She's Got a Way (USA)
French artists took this one.

Yoko Takahashi - A Cruel Angel's Thesis (JPN)

Jil is Lucky-The Wanderer (FRA) (4.0)
Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother (NWY) (3.5)
Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada (BRA) (3.5)
Yoko Takahashi - A Cruel Angel's Thesis (JPN) (1.5)
First good surprise of the tournament - Jil is Lucky's song is brilliant. Neo-folk at its best
Mari Boine comes pretty close, good song.
Sadly, Lula Cortes falls victim to the quality of the two others and I *really* don't get anime music. I find it cheesy (Tank from last year was an exception), but this takes the cake.

Charles aznavour - She (3.5)
Astro - Colombo (3.0)
Prince - Way Back Home (3.0)
Pretty close group. Astro edges Prince because of its wacky side. "She" is a song I heard many times on French radio, it does have a very nice melody to it.

I thought it was funny that, after two Japanese winners in this game, that the first name on this list was Yoko Takahashi. And even funnier when I realized that I'd heard the song many times before through NGE. None of the songs here particularly impressed me, though.
MOON GROUP
Astro - Colombo
Prince - Way Back Home
Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat

The AM forum has consistently turned me on to new Prince deep cuts - but this Astro song is my favorite discovery this time around.

Silversun Pickups-Panic Switch (5.0)

Panic Switch is a screamer. Fantastic song, had to add it in my top 300 songs. The Message has been sampled a number of times, hence the familiarity of the song. As for the two others, rather average songs in their genre.
MERCURY GROUP
Mylène Farmer - Sans logique (3.5)
Laura Veirs - July Flame (3.5)
Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant au royaume des mouches (2.5)
Billy Joel - She's Got a Way (2.0)
If someone told me that I would place Mylène Farmer in first place of any competition ever, I would not have believed them. But this is a rather good song, brings nostalgia to my mood. Laura Veirs' song is also pretty nifty.

The Laura Veirs is the best of the whole batch, IMO. And the amazing music video doesn't hurt. The Billy Joel song reminds me of the artist's biggest strength, a certain sort of universally appealing, American-feeling songs, of which this track is a prime example.

I can't stand that off-key caterwauling by... Jil, I'm presuming. Hmm I wish I could say more about "Cruel Angel" other than that it is good; it feels so bland and one in a million in terms of anime songs. I can name one track right away recommended in the sidebar that is better ("The Real Folk Blues"). The Côrtes/Ramalho track is jaunty (is that a ska beat? i don't know my genres) and freewheeling. The standout was definitely the Mari Boine track.
MOON GROUP
Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat
Charles Aznavour - She
Astro - Colombo
Prince - Way Back Home
I don't think this is Lorde's best tune, but it is still really good. The lyrics are probably near her best, and the dark themes actually quite fits the Hunger Games film it soundtracked. I am highly anticipating her upcoming sophomore record. The other three were really close, really any could have taken my second place spot.

Re: Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 1
Woo hoo - the return of my favorite game on Acclaimed Music! I always end up with some great discoveries from this game, and this week is no different.
SUN:
Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother: 7.5
Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada: 7
Yoko Takahashi - A Cruel Angel's Thesis: 6
Jil is Lucky - The Wanderer: 3.5
Right off the bat, we have some fascinating diversity! Mari Boine takes the cake here with a fascinating glimpse into a culture whose doorstep I was just on in May when I went to Norway. It just edges out an interesting and enjoyable bit of Brazilian magic. "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" was colorful enough, but it couldn't compete. I had a difficult time rating "The Wanderer", as it is fascinating indeed, but I was irritated by it during most of its duration. Nonetheless, it is a song for which I could easily flip my opinion as there are some really captivating elements as well.
MOON:
Prince - Way Back Home: 10
Astro - Colombo: 8
Charles Aznavour - She: 7
Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat: 6.5
I'm still really upset by the events of April. It seems like "Sometimes It Snows in April" has rightly garnered some attention in the wake of Prince's passing, but I think "Way Back Home" is the piece that haunts me the most. It is the principle song that has Prince fans wondering whether he knew his time was near - that falsetto near the end is just heart-wrenching. I also really, really enjoyed my first hint of Chilean synthpop! The immediacy and sheer joy of "Colombo" will see me explore Astro, I'm sure! The strings in "She" are sweet enough to place it above what appears to be my favorite song by an artist I generally dislike in Lorde.
EARTH:
Cymande - The Message: 8
Big L - Put It On: 7
Silversun Pickups - Panic Switch: 7
Rise Against - Prayer of the Refugee: 6.5
A close group overall, but the earthy funk tones of "The Message" make it a solid pick for my favorite here. "Put It On" was quite good, and reaches the upper end of my general appreciation for mid 90s hip hop, just edging "Panic Switch", which boasts a bassline that gives it a boost. I enjoyed "Prayer of the Refugee" a lot more than I thought given its genre.
MERCURY:
Mylène Farmer - Sans logique: 10
Laura Veirs - July Flame: 8.5
Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant au royaume des mouches: 7.5
Billy Joel - She's Got a Way: 5
Those synth strings! That voice! Mylène Farmer demonstrates why I believe females generally are better at breathing life into dramatic emotion in this tale of logic vs. faith, angels vs. demons, and ultimately, sanity vs. insanity. She delivers that haunted melody with such passion AND such frailty that it is just stunning for me. Its music video is also pretty stunning. "July Flame" is an excellent second place finisher here, yet another discovery of an artist of whose existence I was unaware prior to this game. The Jean-Claude Vannier track was a nice surprise as well, but can't compete with the top 2. That said, it's well ahead of "She's Got a Way", which is at least less offensive than most of what I hear from Billy Joel.
SUN:
Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother: 7.5
Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada: 7

SUN GROUP
1. Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother
2. Jil is Lucky-The Wanderer
3. Yoko Takahashi - A Cruel Angel's Thesis
4. Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada
The Wanderer was heading for #4 until I listened to the version on Spotify. The slightly different mix with (what I think is) a different recording of the vocal improves the song no end. (Not watching the dire video helps too.)
I like the music on the Brazilian track, but not the vocal. Maybe further listening could fix that.
MOON GROUP
1. Charles aznavour - She
2. Prince - Way Back Home
3. Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat
4. Astro - Colombo
Weakest group overall.
EARTH GROUP
1. Silversun Pickups-Panic Switch
2. Rise Against - Prayer of the Refugee

MERCURY GROUP

4. Billy Joel - She's Got a Way
Let's say I'm not a fan of Billy Joel, but the other 3 are all engaging and rank close together. That is 3 albums that deserve a listen.
1. Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother
2. Jil is Lucky-The Wanderer
3. Yoko Takahashi - A Cruel Angel's Thesis
4. Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada

I like the music on the Brazilian track, but not the vocal. Maybe further listening could fix that.
MOON GROUP
1. Charles aznavour - She
2. Prince - Way Back Home
3. Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat
4. Astro - Colombo
Weakest group overall.
EARTH GROUP
1. Silversun Pickups-Panic Switch
2. Rise Against - Prayer of the Refugee
3. Cymande - The Message
4. Big L - Put It On
Strongest group overall.
MERCURY GROUP
1. Laura Veirs - July Flame
2. Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant au royaume des mouches
3. Mylène Farmer - Sans logique
4. Billy Joel - She's Got a Way
Let's say I'm not a fan of Billy Joel, but the other 3 are all engaging and rank close together. That is 3 albums that deserve a listen.

SUN GROUP
Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada
Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother
Jil is Lucky-The Wanderer
Yoko Takahashi - A Cruel Angel's Thesis
Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada was a fun ride! The Wanderer could have fared better, but I'm not a fan of Jil is Lucky's vocals.
MOON GROUP
Astro - Colombo
Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat
Prince - Way Back Home
Charles aznavour - She
Nice group with two very enjoyable pop songs and a (for me as not the biggest Prince fan around) surprisingly solid, almost no-frills R'n'B track by Mr. Nelson.
EARTH GROUP
Cymande - The Message
Rise Against - Prayer of the Refugee
Big L - Put It On
Silversun Pickups-Panic Switch
Great laid-back track by Cymande. I instantly recognized Prayer of the Refugee, at first I thought from some kind of video game. But I checked and this seems very unlikely now. Some close friends of mine are big fans of Rise Against though, so I've probably heard it at some kind of house party. Definitely gained some nostalgia points through that. I never thought I'd put the Silversun Pickups last, really strong bracket indeed.
MERCURY GROUP
Mylène Farmer - Sans logique
Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant au royaume des mouches
Laura Veirs - July Flame
Billy Joel - She's Got a Way
Top three are pretty close in this group.
Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho - Nas Paredes Da Pedra Encantada

EARTH GROUP
Cymande - The Message
Big L - Put It On
Silversun Pickups-Panic Switch
Rise Against - Prayer of the Refugee
"Prayer of the Refugee," as well as other songs in that vein, don't transition very smoothly. That with the screaming vocals don't make it a very enjoyable listen. The top two were tough to choose between. "The Message" has that sound that is hard not to like.
MERCURY GROUP
Mylène Farmer - Sans logique
Laura Veirs - July Flame
Billy Joel - She's Got a Way
Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant au royaume des mouches
Man, I used to really enjoy Billy Joel, but the sugariness is starting to get on my nerves. On the other hand, the Vannier song is quite a mess. Mylene Farmer's voice is like magic -- it kind of rides and flows on the groove.

Re: Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 1
Just to mention how close the game is, we have two groups currently that are tied for first, but in both cases one song holds a tiebreaker.
In group three, there is even a tie for last.

With about two hours to deadline, we have a case of two songs that are tied in both points and top votes.

Polls closed, but for the moment I am talking with Moonbeam. Before the next round begins, I'll have to clear things up with him.

Re: Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 1
In the Meantime, this is what I counted.
SUN
Mari Boine (60, 10)
Lula Cortes & Ze Ramalho (39, 4)
---
Yoko Tahashi (36, 1)
Jil is Lucky (35, 2)
Mari had the greatest victory this week
MOON
Prince (45, 3)
Astro (42, 4)*
Lorde (42, 4)*
---
Charles azanovour (41, 6)
This was back and forth all the way through and the one I most request a recount on. If results hold, Lorde and Astro would go to sudden-death tiebreaker. And Charles would be the first song to finish LAST in a group after taking the most top votes.
EARTH
Cymande (57, 7)
Silversun Pickups (46, 5)
---
Big L (41, 4)
Rise Against (36, 2)
Silversun Pickups led late until Cymande overtook them on Thursday. Though both songs advance on decisive margins.
MERCURY
Mylene Farmer (49, 9)
Laura Viers (46, 3)
---
Jean-Claude (43, 4)
Billy Joel (23, 0)
Mylene and Laura were neck and neck most of the way with Mylene only pulling ahead on the last batch of votes. I request a recount here not for who advanced but for seeding.

Upon further recount, it becomes:

Lorde (42, 4)
So, which count is correct?

Re: Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 1
Moonbeam has recently informed me his count had Astro with 43 points.
With that said, I think we can say Astro-Columbo advances.
If there are any objections, please speak up!
