A good question!

This year hasn't had a whole lot of releases make my top 500 albums list. So far there's only been two (compare to 2015 and 2014 which had six albums each make my top 500). Anyway, here are the two albums, with their position on my all-time list to the right...

David Bowie- Blackstar (#139)
Anohni- Hopelessness (#371)

Granted, as time goes by new additions to my top 500 tend to rise as I spend more time with them until they more or less settle into their final positions. For "Blackstar", I'd say that album is pretty much settled. I could see "Hopelessness" moving up a little though with time.

As for albums from 2016 that are just on the cusp of my top 500, there's three (rankings on my top albums of 2016 list to the left)...

3. Maxwell- blackSUMMERS'night
4. Beyoncé- Lemonade
5. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds- Skeleton Tree

These are the only three albums from 2016 that have a serious shot at my top 500 (that aren't already there). Now, there's a small chance that these albums will rise with time, but for Maxwell and Beyoncé, I'd say their albums have settled. The Nick Cave album is so new though, that I haven't had a lot of time to mull it over. It could go higher, or it could stay where it is. It's too hard to tell now though.

As for albums that are scheduled to be released this year but haven't come out yet, there's a couple that I'm really excited about, like the new Preoccupations, Danny Brown, and Jenny Hval albums. But the only album scheduled to be released that I feel has a good shot at my top 500 is the new Bon Iver, as I've really liked what I've heard from the album so far, and because their previous two albums are both in my top 500.

A bit too recent for songs, but I'll give you the run down on that as well!

As of now the only song from 2016 in my top 500 is Anohni's "Drone Bomb Me", at #382. This might increase as time goes by, but I have a strong feeling that this ranking has settled. This would make "Drone Bomb Me" my lowest ranked song of the year since 1996 (Manic Street Preacher's "A Design for Life", my song of the year for 1996, currently ranks at #403).

As for songs on the cusp of my top 500, I can review that too. Currently there are 6 songs from 2016 in my top 100 songs of the 2010s. They are as follows (with their position on said list on the right)...

1. Anohni- Drone Bomb Me (#20)
2. Kanye West (featuring Kendrick Lamar)- No More Parties in L.A. (#45)
3. James Blake (featuring Bon Iver)- I Need a Forest Fire (#59)
4. Tegan and Sara- Boyfriend (#63)
5. Maxwell- 1990x (#88)
6. Radiohead- Daydreaming (#95)

Now, just as before, these songs may rise a little, but I wouldn't expect a whole lot of changes in their rankings. For a comparison on how close my number 2 song of the year is to entering my top 500, the lowest ranked song in my top 500 from the 2010s is "Gosh" by Jamie xx, which currently ranks at #29 on my top 100 songs of the 2010s. So with that in mind, even if "No More Parties in L.A." increases its placement by a couple ranks, which very well could happen, it still has a slim chance of entering my top 500.

Therefore, I'm concerned that this may be, for me, a very weak year song-wise. However, I do tend to find a lot of great songs that make their way onto my top songs of the year list when the critic's end of the year lists start to come in, so there's a decent chance that I could find another song that ends up in my top 500, or even surpasses "Drone Bomb Me" to become my song of the year.

But only heard Skeleton Tree and Blonde once each and they probably have good shots. Blonde already appeared on Spotify.
