Nine Inch Nails - Hurt

Frank Sinatra - One for My Baby - and One More for the Road

Pixies - Velouria

ABBA - S.O.S.

blur - Coffee and TV

The Sundays - Here's Where the Story Ends

Fiona Apple - Criminal

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Sacrilege

Kills me to have to knock out "Master Of Puppets" and "Knights of Cydonia" but have to vote for a horrible song like "S.O.S." out of spite for the song that knocked out "Head Like A Hole"

Um… it seems that all my nominations have been mercilessly butchered on the two first rounds, along with many of my favourite songs not nominated by me. In fact almost the 70% of the songs I ranked from 1 to 5 on the first round had been eliminated. Lately I've noticing that my coincidence with the forum on different games is decreasing, my tastes are getting more and more divergent with the consensus tastes. Losing my edge? Maybe, I don't know, but probably the main reason for that is the demographic shift that Pierre noticed on the demographic thread, this forum is evolving from old Europeans to young Americans (with old/young I mean more or less than 30-years-old, please no offence). Anyway it's no big deal. Even if my favourites are gone there are still many good songs on the game, I'm going to vote till the end…

Third round and the quality again seems to be going up. I still hate S.O.S. and fail to see what makes Coffee and TV special, but the rest is like or love.

The quality level has really increased a lot, now. Songs from 1 to 13 are all great.
Also, it has became quite obvious that the second bracket was much stronger than the first one.

14. Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
vs.
16. Metallica - Master of Puppets

4. Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
vs.
15. Frank Sinatra - One for My Baby - and One More for the Road

5. Pixies - Velouria
vs.
12. Oasis - Champagne Supernova
"Champagne Supernova" is one of the songs that have grown on me during the game. I used to consider it the worst song on WTSMG, but finally the melody and Liam's delivery have clicked with me.

10. The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day
vs.
9. ABBA - S.O.S.

8. blur - Coffee and TV
vs.
2. Air - All I Need
"Coffee and TV" is the song that introduced me to Blur and, thus, to Britpop and indie music in general. Anyway, even if it has a nice, propulsive guitar/bass driven rithm, it can't top such a perfect song like "All I Need". Hirsch's inspired vocals over beautiful guitars, combined with noises in the right places make for a song that is pleasant in all the details.

7. The Sundays - Here's Where the Story Ends
vs.
11. Muse - Knights of Cydonia
I think people who put "Kights of Cydonia" at the very top of their lists do it because of its amazing, epic first half, while the ones who put it at the bottom, do it because of the last part. It could have been a grand song had the group found the right way to follow those overpowering first 3 minutes.

1. Fiona Apple - Criminal
vs.
6. The Roots ft. Erykah Badu - You Got Me

3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Sacrilege
vs.
13. Mercury Rev - Holes

There was one tie but I used luney's late vote to break it.

Hurt: 10
Master of Puppets: 11

Sweet Thing: 16
One for My Baby - and One More for the Road: 5

Velouria: 11
Champagne Supernova: 10

Oh Happy Day: 9
S.O.S.: 12

Coffee and TV: 9
All I Need: 12

Here's Where the Story Ends: 14
Knights of Cydonia: 7

Criminal: 11
You Got Me: 10

Sacrilege: 6
Holes: 14

All I Need vs. Here's Where the Story Ends is already stressing me out...

I actually love the whole song. I love the buildup with the triplets and vocal harmonies into the one of my all-time favorite guitar riffs that drives the last 2 minutes. And it stands out even more to me now that so few epic rock songs have come out since.

At least it lost to another great song, and so did Champagne Supernova...Only one of my nominees remains.
