Post by Sweepstakes Ron »

It's come down to this. Canadian post-rock vs. Seattle grunge. Vote for your favorite, and whichever gets the most points will be the ultimate champion! The deadline is August 11 at 9 PM EST.

5885. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Storm
vs.
5971. Pearl Jam - Black

And let's open up some discussion: what were your favorite discoveries from this game?

Never expected it to make it this far, but really glad to see it in the final. I hope it wins!

Never heard "Echoes" before. Now I kinda have mixed feelings about one of my favorites artists, Andrew Lloyd Webber. "Aisha" and the Chicago song were also pretty cool.

Since I've been providing clips for the selected songs in different versions (live versions, amateur solo covers, unplugged versions) for the final I just wanted to post the official clips. Only to find there were no official clips for these two songs. So instead I'm going to post unofficial amateur video clips. But a warning before you click on the links: maybe some of the ones that already voted for "Black" are going to be tempted to change your vote after seeing the spectacular, breathtakingly beautiful images of the amateur video of "Storm." I was particularly fascinated by the image of that little girl walking under a graffiti stating "Viva la guerra" ("Long Live War").

1. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Storm (Kurtis Hough video)
vs.
2. Pearl Jam - Black (Matt Mitchener video)

As a bonus, here there are the official video clips of the semifinalists, Im Nin' Alu and Follow Your Arrow

Many thanks, Sweepstakes Ron!

Thanks for posting, Honorio! I hope others have had a chance to watch these amateur videos, each stunning in their own right. If choosing based upon the videos alone, I'd have to go with the epic cinematography of "Storm" over the deeply personal "Black," though both are outstanding visual representations of their respective songs.

However, voting on the basis of the songs alone, I was never big into grunge, but for me there were always three standouts: Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (the genre's defining moment), Alice In Chains' "Would?" (its most bitter moment), and Pearl Jam's "Black" (its most heartbreaking moment). The only real challenger for me personally was "Echoes," which lost in the semifinals, so my championship vote now goes to Pearl Jam - Black.

Black FTW!

My favorite discovery from this game is definitely "They Don't Know". I love listening to it so much.

I'm sure by the time the next update comes around, the entire lower ranks will shift enough that barely anything will be the same (especially if we get those additional songs and can go even lower).
