Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!

Post by Dexter »

Here's the corrected Top 500 in relation to the 2013 poll. Thank you so much JimmyJazz for the labour of love (although it became a chore later on, you held on 'til the end) and for BleuPanda for helping him out down the finish line.

From the result, I observed that due to the record votes and the resulting significant sway of casual new voters, mainstream acts (which the regulars either love or -the vocal ones- hate) have gained traction. The trade-off with this is that a lot of artists which some thought we're sure to make it, didn't. The biggest casualties seem to be early Rock and R&B artists, blues.

legend:
red = top 10 fallers
green = top 10 gainers
blue = slid out of the top 100
yellow = new entry or re-entry in the top 100

BRIEF RETURN FROM THE EXILE

Seriously though, thanks for all of the compliments everybody, and also wanted to comment on the fascinating variations on the lists being provided so far. As far as some more "genre"-specific suggestions go, there are several I have in mind.

Pop Fans List: I would personally base it around Madonna more than ABBA, as I feel love of her is really the barometer for how much you love "mainstream pop" or are anti it.

Classic/Daddy Rock List: People who voted for at least three of the following acts: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, Guns N Roses, Black Sabbath, and/or Aerosmith.

Oldies Fans List (the "DDD/Bruce" list LOL  ): People who voted for at least 3 of the following acts: Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, and/or Little Richard.

Romain's List: People who voted for Serge Gainsbourg.

Country Fans List: People who voted for at least 3 country acts (i.e. Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, etc.).

Cinephile Music Playlist: People who voted for Ennio Morricone or any recognizable film scorer.

I was also thinking of maybe doing some age bracket/generational based lists, but we are obviously not aware of the age of all of these voters! Maybe also American vs. non-American users lists, Anglophone vs. non-Anglophone lists.

I really wouldn't be surprised if we were all under age 40 haha.

This forum generally has a wider age range than most I've visited.

I'm 23.

You guys are reminding me that I'll soon have to launch the new demographics poll (for nationalities, not age ranges, but it's demographics nonetheless). I will launch it August 1st, if I forget, please someone remind me.

If there's real interest in this, someone should create one for age ranges too. I'm 28, by the way.

Great lists guys and gals! I'm a bit late to the REM chat before, but as the person who voted them number 1 I just want to explain my vote. REM were the peak of the 80s and 90s alternative movement and were key in the change in rock and pop music during that era. They were able to grow as artists for over 30 years while consistently putting out quality material : they put out fifteen albums and 14 are well respected. They paved the way for musicians to get big and not sell out. And this was a gut Poll and I went with my gut: if I was going to start making music, I would want to make music like them. I would write more but I'm phone posting in a car.

Honestly the main thing I've gotten from all those lists is that I somehow forgot to vote for Can.

Funny that. I was also surprised to be missing from the Can list.

I will be 61 next month.

Is there a difference between Nilsson (ranked ~1372) and Harry Nilsson (ranked ~667)?

Is there a spreadsheet that provides us with a list of the AM top 3000 acclaimed artists? I was not able to determine many of the artists ranked between 1212 and 3000, including: 1212, 1554, 1656, 1850, 1859, 1931, 1958, 1984 and 1990.

Are all of the top 3000 slots taken? If so, how can we find out by whom?

Google can give you answer number by number for some of those (which is not the most convenient way for sure)

1212 : Ma Rainey
1554 : Google gives me 2 outdated answers...
1656 : Patrick Wolf
1850 : Google gives me 1 outdated answer
1859 : Dooley Wilson
1931 : Google gives me 1 outdated answer
1958 : Stick McGhee
1984 : Harry Choates
1990 : Jarvis Cocker

A belated thank you to JimmyJazz for all the work he put into this poll and for unveiling the results with such flair. He moved to a new location around the same time as calculating the results and doing the roll-out for the poll. Moving home can be both physically and emotionally exhausting…

[imgsize 388x259]http://elmeme.me/static/uploads/images/ ... n_full.jpg[/imgsize]

…so thanks again JimmyJazz for giving us the results despite the stress and commitments you had to deal with.
Thanks also to BleuPanda for offering a helping hand when it was needed (at least you gained some impressive Excel skills at the same time!), and thanks to everyone else for the interesting comments and alternative lists.

Serious question here. Why? As far as I know, a lurker is someone who frequents a forum without posting, which would describe the new users. There's no negative connotation at all.
I’m starting to think that this is probably true. I stated in a previous post that the word “lurker” sometimes have a negative connotation here in the UK. That was based on a couple of my British friends using the word to (as I said in that post) describe a *cough* “creepy motherfucker” *cough*. The word came up again when I was talking to people at a music event recently, and I asked what the word meant to them. All of them said that they only knew the word in the context of a person on the internet who visits forums but don’t participate. So, I’m sorry for making it sound in that previous post as if the word “lurker” definitely has a negative connotation in the UK. It probably doesn’t. My bad. Even so, it will likely continue to sound like a negative word to me.

It was more in reference to the seemingly negative connotation with which people here were using it: that newcomers to the forum with a more pop or mainstream oriented taste have somehow "lesser" opinions which could affect the results of the poll and upend some of the traditional AM faves. I find the idea of a required number of posts to participate in these polls to be an absurd-and frankly disappointing-idea to be voiced in a forum I never believed would entertain such a notion.

I looked at some of the artists among my favorites that received only a few other votes in the forum and thought that perhaps some overlap in appreciation is indicated with those who joined me in voting for these artists, including those who voted for the following artists:

1) Steely Dan (my ranking=4/ poll ranking=86): Georgie (1), Henrick (2), DocBrown (22), Miguel (31), Honorio (52), Bang Jan (53), Red Ant (63), Nick (67), whuntva (81), stone37 (85),

2) The Eagles (26/110): Craig (69), stone37(82), Daniel (62), jamieW (53), andy1010 (40), Bruno (80), prosecutorgodot (12), RedAnt (4), whuntva (9),

3) Yes (3/119): Zombeels (35), BangJan (17), RedAnt (48), Miguel (15), Jackson (25), ordinaryperson (40),

4) Todd Rundgren (1/198): Honorio (87), Georgie (18), TimmyWing (86),

5) The Style Council (2/267): Honorio (75),

6) Chicago (9/299): profeta (75), jamieW (88), Daniel (55),

7) The Allman Brothers (13/354): Kingoftonga (52), Mattceinicram (56), Blanco (83),

8) Joe Jackson (15/458): Honorio (84),

9) Blind Faith (19/481): Red Ant (69),

10) Emerson, Lake and Palmer (43/573): Zombeels (44).

I wonder if any of these poll participants above that appear to have some alignment with my preferences (or other poll participants) came close to voting for one or more of the following artists which received no votes other than mine in the poll:

1) Utopia (6/378) - not so likely,
2) Steve Winwood (7/385) - some potential,
3) Joe Satriani (8/393) - not so likely
4) The Doobie Brothers (10/432) - some potential,
5) The English Beat (14/493) - some potential,
6) Donald Fagen (17/529) - some potential,
7) Chick Corea/Return to Forever (18/549) - some potential
8) The Rascals (30/512) - not so likely,
9) Jim Croce (46/871) - not so likely,
10) Paul Weller (49/911) - some potential

I like Donald Fagen's The Nightfly on a couple cursory listens, but not familiar enough yet, so still out of my top 200 artists. It has that easy-going attitude which draws me to other artists like Norah Jones.

I went back to this poll, and determined the top 10 artists on the AM charts that didn't get a single vote. It's a pretty diverse list, besides being mostly U.S. artists.

[AM Rank] [Artist] [Location] [Genre] [(extra description)]
266 Sonny Rollins
(New York) (Hard bop, Jazz)
Tenor saxophonist. Writer David Baker said that Rollins "will sometimes improvise on a rhythmic pattern instead of on the melody." Rollins also pioneered removing piano from his recordings, leaving just himself, bass and drums.
273 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
(New York) (Disco-Rap)
Early hip-hop pioneers, made up of one DJ, Grandmaster Flash, and five emcees: Melle Mel (most notably), Keef Cowboy, The Kidd Creole, Scorpio, and Rahiem. Fun fact: Melle Mel and The Kidd Creole were the first rappers to call themselves "MCs".
282 MC5
(Detroit, Michigan) (Garage rock, Proto-punk)
Members include vocalist Rob Tyner, guitarists Wayne Kramer and Fred Smith (future husband of Patti Smith). The band was notably affiliated with militant leftist groups. In the band's early days, they were taken under the wing of John Sinclair, a leader of the White Panthers, a group assisting the Blank Panther Party. The band's run-ins with authorities made them an earlier version of N.W.A. in the media.
285 Basement Jaxx
(England) (Dance-pop, Funky house, Big beat)
Sprung from the club scene in South London.
295 New York Dolls
(New York) (Glam rock, Proto-punk)
Definitely inspired KISS's image. Fun fact: Morrissey of the Smiths organized a reunion show for the band in 2004.
296 Jane's Addiction
(L.A., California) (Alternative metal, Alternative rock)
A prominent band in the early wave of alternative music in the late Eighties preceding the Nirvana tsunami.
314 Count Basie
(New Jersey) (Big band, Swing)
Count Basie formed his famous orchestra in the 1930s, which differed from other big bands of the time by featuring two tenor saxophones (including Lester Young) instead of one. The Count Basie Orchestra would go on to work with major blues artists such as Billie Holiday and Big Joe Turner. Basie worked with many other singers, such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. The orchestra would play on for nearly 50 years.
316 Stan Getz
(Pennsylvania, U.S.) (Samba, jazz, bossa nova, bop)
Tenor saxophonist who collaborated with the likes of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, and helped to popularize the genre of bossa nova.
323 TLC
(Georgia, U.S.) (Contemporary R&B)
The incredibly popular Nineties female trio, with T-Boz, Left Eye, and Chilli. T and C were singers, L was a rapper. Beyonce once said "TLC has influenced just about every female group that's out there now."
328 ZZ Top
(Texas) (Southern rock, blues rock)
Critics and fellow musicians are impressed by the band's rootsiness and technical ability. The band is also known for its humorous lyrics. Of course, who can forget their facial hair?

Check 'em out, y'all! :music-listening:

Well, y'see, it's a satellite. And it has love. I dunno.

It is about a guy who is watching TV coverage of a satellite launch while contemplating his girlfriend's infidelity. 'Satellite of Love' then becomes a metaphor for his own circumstances.

It's about stalking a former paramour, I believe. Lou is witnessing a space launch of a satellite to orbit the Earth, and he is equating that with an obsession following around his ex and recoiling at rumors of her "being bold with Harry, Mark, and John", etc.

After "Sad Song", it is my favorite song of his by some distance.

genius.com is a really good site to find out song meanings. Perhaps it covers rap better than rock at this point, but it's getting better all the time. It used to be Rap Genius, but it got merged with some rock site.
